Understanding The Pedophile's Brain

Dr. James Cantor talks about what brain research is telling us about the minds of the most abhorred people in society, pedophiles, and what he's learned that might help protect more children from them. Source YouTube

I wonder if the IQ/height deficit of pedophiles is influenced by the bias of selecting for pedophiles who act on their impulses and are caught indicating a lack of mental development or impulse control.

10-15 IQ points BELOW AVERAGE?!? That means gorillas and birds may be more intelligent.

If this study is correct, and pedophilia is a brain disorder, that means by law we need to excise all pedophiles from prison and put them in treatment/mental hospitals. Suddenly, prosecuting pedophiles is a violation of the American disabilities act.
Putting people in prison/to death for physical deformities is not what we do in a free society.
I hope these findings are a step towards an effective treatment.

It does seem that we, as a society, are so disturbed by their actions that we create restrictions for them on release from prison that invariably put them back in, restrictions like where they can live, work, walk, who they can talk to, often not allowed to use computers, etc. It seems to me that if we're going to hold their crimes against them for life in that way, we should maybe simply make it a death penalty crime and quit pretending we think we can rehabilitate them when we don't really think that.

Funny thing is, it has been proven that there are also a lot of irregularities in the brains of other criminals. So yeah... I think youre right, but not quite there yet.
Cause and effect is massively underused in our society, and the guy explained why. We tend to see things much simpler than they really are. Which is mostly the fault of religion and media (good and bad bullshit, which effectively shuts out differentiated thinking).

Well, there's a big difference between an 'irregularity' and a specific 'cross wiring' of how the brain works.

I'm all for treatment and prevention, both for this and other disorders that can become antisocial. Even psychopathy is a likely caused by a distinct physical difference in the brain.

Though your comment made me think of how the legal definition of insanity makes it hard for us to have a rational, consistent and humane approach to criminal justice. The idea is that the insane are not responsible for their actions, and so they should not be subject to punishment, but treatment. But none of us are responsible for our own thoughts or actions. The more understanding and empathetic standard of treatment that we apply to the "insane" should be how we treat everyone.

I'm not sure we should be sympathetic to convicted pedophiles, even if it is a brain disorder.

There was a scene in Nymphomaniac where the main character forces someone to admit they were a pedophile. When she's telling this to someone else later, her listener says something along the lines of "I hope you made him pay for being a pedophile."

She disagrees. When asked why, she says, "If someone is sexually attracted to children, and knows they're sexually attracted to children, but doesn't act on it because they know it's wrong and keeps it hidden, he deserves a medal."

At the end of the day, the convicted pedophile acted on his sexual desires, and forced themselves on a child. If the crossed-wire theory is true, this is akin to a man being sexually attracted to a woman who isn't interested, but forces himself on her anyway.

The problem of seeing it as a mental illness is that we're in danger of letting slide the fact that this person decided his desires were more important than the health and safety of another person. That's where the crime lies.

If they do that, I hope they amend a brain treatment for convicted paedophiles that includes high velocity injections of 123-147 grain Spitzer shaped lead.

I'm not so certain being institutionalized in a state run criminal mental asylum is really all that sympathetic.

Yeah, anyone of average intelligence of higher is way less likely to be caught, and way less likely to just own up to it.

Devellesays...

No one can help the way they were born. We need to accept people for who they are. We all need to truly love ourselves. With compassion we can help make the world a better place for everyone. Hate, repulsion, and blanket exclusion are not helpful!
