Stephen Colbert speaks to the House Immigration Comittee

Stephen Colbert tells of his experiences working alongside migrant labourers.

This is for real, not some put-up. Apparently he was asked to leave before the meeting began but the chair asked him to stay.

Damn, that was funny but also disappointing. I was expecting an actual anecdote or something.

Actually that's what I find about Colbert usually. He's funny playing his role, but it's disappointing after awhile and I get tired of it. That's why it's all about Jon for me.

Bravo. Exquisitely balanced use of deadpan irony, satire and sarcasm to make these points in a much more thought provoking way than would otherwise have been possible. People seem to have completely missed this.

Satire is never quite as funny when it has to be explained, but what he did through this dialog was bring out in the open numerous ingrained (and many would agree, wrong) views on the subject of migrant labor (esp on farms). Food for thought, pardon the pun.

Also WTF is up with the lady checking her Blackberry when someone is speaking? I find it staggering that members of this House Judiciary sub-committee haven't been issued Droid Incredibles.

Isn't this a little too Idiocracy... congressional subcomittees basing their decisions on comedians doing standup.

What are the chances of us seeing this on television on our own if it weren't for Colbert's celebrity status?

peggedbeasays...

i'm torn. so part of me really wanted him to hand them their asses in the most serious and painful of fashions. but then part of me thinks congress is fucking ridiculous and deserves to mocked and ridiculed to their faces.

but he did insert some facts and some good points. i hope they weren't lost.

I wouldn't call Colbert a fucktard or anything harsh like people did above, but I understand the sentiment a little. I sorta feel like since he plays the character so much, it would've been more meaningful if he had dropped it for a congressional hearing. That way, people couldn't dismiss it as him just trying to get laughs.

I hear people dismiss Colbert/Stuart as simple comedians, but they're both really smart guys from what I've seen when they're not on their respective shows. They're great even when they're not delivering pre-written material. I think it's important for these people to see that these shows aren't just made 100% for laughs...they're made because some really smart people have some really smart commentary which just so happens is funny as hell.

Guess I'm just saying it's more helpful when people see the two guys being really smart/eloquent outside of their shows/characters. Jon Stewart/Bill O'Reilly interview, for example.

in this case, given the context of the issue, not appreciated = lost

furthermore the idea of dismissing someone's disposition because they delivered it in a comedic manner or because theyre a comedian by trade is no different than the testimony of a man decrying racial injustice and being discredited because he's not a minority.

I have to say that i find the man unbearable and entirely without humour
Satire can be devastating (see mitchell and webb), but this? Ugh, cringeworthy to me.

didnt know Channel's "Snobbish Pretention" fragrance was on the market yet. Thought I smelled something cringe-worthy

I take it there's no fragrance to aid with joke making.
