Soylent Commercial

I like the aesthetic of this commercial. It's got some kind of hope about living in a post-scarcity world baked into it.

Hypothetical discussion:

"Where do you work?'"

"At the Soylent factory."

"But ... Soylent Green is made of people!!!!"

I wonder if they regret naming their product something cute that has turned into a tired joke?

RFlaggsays...

I thought perhaps it was satire or something, but it seems to be a real product.... why would you name a nutritional supplement Soylent? I mean nobody during the naming stage pointed out the movie?

Name recognition and irony, I suppose.
My diet has been about 90% soylent for the past 7 months and I can't imagine going back. I've reduced my body fat, have more energy and more ambition, I'm healthier, better moods, spend less on food, waste less food, waste less time figuring out what to eat and when I eat the food I actually enjoy it tastes amazing.

Hell, their own FAQ makes it absolutely clear that they're well aware of the previous use of the name. They picked it from the book. Seems remarkably tone-deaf to me, but it's not my money invested.

Frankly, I can't think of any way I could be less interested in this...food is more than just nutrition. I'd no more use this pablum than I'd be interested in the dinner-in-a-pill from the Jetsons.

But it's a cool commercial, nonetheless.

If I remember correctly, there was solylent yellow and some others as well. It was only Soylent *green* that was made of people. I'm going to have to rewatch that movie. It was pretty damn good for the early 70s .

That's awesome. I'm thinking about brewing my own, as it's hard to get here in Australia. There seems to be a real DIY movement with lots of recipes out there. I'd like to try it for a month.

when your teeth fall out, your brain starts slipping away and you need four times a day care, then you will get Fortisip shoved down your mouth to prolong your eventual demise. Why would you start now? I live to eat not eat to live.

The DIY webpage makes it really easy to customize your own recipe.

I'd say it's definitely worth experimenting with soylent. Even as an occassoinal meal replacement, it's better than grabbing junk food when you don't have time to plan a meal.

The thing is, there are already well established nutrition supplement shakes that have been around for years with lots of clinical data to support their effectiveness, and moreover they cost less than half as much as Soylent. You can find them at every grocery story and pharmacy. I myself tend to keep a 12 pack of the generic equivalent of Ensure Plus around for when I oversleep or get home too late to cook or something and it's better to slug one down than to miss a meal.

Air is hands down WAY more enjoyable than food -- and it's less messy and weird tasting.

So you're saying we should make more Soylent, and at the same time decrease the global population? Maybe the "Green" solution would be to make Soylent out of....

I feel like Soylent might be one of those unpopular ideas like the automobile - (why would you want to get in one of those infernal, noisy contraptions) - that might have a bright future - mainly because of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population#/media/File:World-Population-1800-2100.svg
