Sinead O'Connor shuts-up a crowd booing her anti-popeness

Live at Madison Square Garden, for the Bob Dylan Tribute 1992, Sinead O'Connor is booed off stage by a massive crowd angry at her recent ripping-up of the pope's picture -- but not before she gives them a spirited serve.

Great blog post on the issue: http://www.eoinbutler.com/home/isnt-sinead-oconnor-overdue-a-massive-grovelling-apology-from-absolutely-everybody/

I was kinda hoping she would just stand there silent until they stopped and then walked off when they did, rather than give that nervous singing rant.

Still good mind.

Are you joking? This is incredible, what a fucking heart on that woman. What a way to stand up to utter ignorance. She bites back the tears, delivers her heart felt lyrics despite the intimidation she was facing, to stand up for such a noble belief, and you whinge about her giving a "nervous rant"?

Her most powerful quote in the article:

. . . many of us in Ireland recognized the idea that we needed the church to get closer to Jesus as blasphemy.

To Irish Catholics, Benedict's implication -- Irish sexual abuse is an Irish problem -- is both arrogant and blasphemous. The Vatican is acting as though it doesn't believe in a God who watches. The very people who say they are the keepers of the Holy Spirit are stamping all over everything the Holy Spirit truly is. Benedict criminally misrepresents the God we adore. We all know in our bones that the Holy Spirit is truth. That's how we can tell that Christ is not with these people who so frequently invoke Him.

Oh, and also, she has the grace enough to understand where the anger came from:

"Almost 18 years ago, I tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II on an episode of "Saturday Night Live." Many people did not understand the protest -- the next week, the show's guest host, actor Joe Pesci, commented that, had he been there, "I would have gave her such a smack." I knew my action would cause trouble, but I wanted to force a conversation where there was a need for one; that is part of being an artist. All I regretted was that people assumed I didn't believe in God. That's not the case at all. I'm Catholic by birth and culture and would be the first at the church door if the Vatican offered sincere reconciliation."

You can fuck little boys in the ass...just don't rip up a picture. This is bordering on the reaction of the drawings of Mohammed...surprised she wasn't killed.

Inspiring emotional strength and power. I saw her performance of War on Saturday Night Live when it first aired, but I never saw this. *wipes single tear* I have had a crush on her since the mid/late 80's and this just brought it back in full force. Thanks for posting this.
