Pretty sure this is exactly what's supposed to be happening. Otherwise she'd just sweep the leaves under the door and collect them on the other side.

What's charming to me, and I don't speak Mandarin but understand a little bit---it how she mutters at one point in Mandarin something which translates to "you are really wrong, you are wrong"---she clearly likes them, but finds them utterly exasperating.
