Please watch this. No matter where you are on the political spectrum. At least the first 120 seconds.

newtboysays...There is compromise, meaning giving up part of what you want to make something palatable to others, which is good IMO, and there is compromise meaning giving up your stated principles, which is terrible IMO, and there is compromised meaning you are damaged or open to attacks. The latter 2 are why I can't vote for Clinton.
The implication that Sanders doesn't compromise by the first definition is plain wrong, but the implication that he doesn't compromise or isn't compromised in the 2nd and 3rd definition is correct, and why we needed him as the nominee so badly.

I really want folks to see this. I think it is so important.

I like his point at the beginning that we're actually living in the best time ever. It's counter-intuitive because the of the way media works today and we're getting blasted with so much bad news.
But honestly, do you think the world is in a more precarious situation than say 1942 or even 1962?
newtboysays...In most cases, absolutely not, but in a few, yes.
For instance, there was nothing besides nuclear war in either '42 or '62 to compare with climate change as a danger to the planet, and while we still have the threat of nuclear war (although it's certainly not as great a threat today as during the missile crisis, but if we have Trump's finger on the button, that threat level changes), we now also have the out of control issue of the climate destabilizing that threatens civilization itself.
Over population comes to mind as another issue that's far worse.
But I do agree, for the most part, we are in a far less precarious position than we have been in the past on most issues, and so many minor issues are blown out of proportion by the media looking for ratings and money instead of looking to inform.

ChaosEnginesays...TBF, we had climate change in 62 as well, we just didn't realise it.

Paybacksays...There is no negotiating with climate change. You can't outspend it developing space-based lasers (USSR), and you can't fix the problem by shooting at it (1942), so yes, it is more precarious.

newtboysays...True enough, but in 62, or even 72 or 82, we could have still done something about it, so it wasn't the insurmountable problem we addressed far too late that it is today.
By 92, it was getting to be too late to 'solve', and now it's so beyond too late for action that it's an unavoidable planet wide extinction level event, and barely even partially mitigatable, not that we're actually trying.
TBF, we had climate change in 62 as well, we just didn't realise it.

The first two minutes are so important. It is the bedrock of democracy, the bedrock of a diverse society that has to find some common ground, or we are all lost.
Even if compromise hurts. Even if you are right.

radxsays..."[the] world is actually healthier, wealthier, better educated, more tolerant, less violent than it has ever been."
Not in places like Afghanistan, Libya, Jemen, Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Lebanon, downtown Chicago, Detroit or Cleveland. Not in Greece. And I'm not entirely sure it's a better place for the hundreds of millions of Chinese who left their rural areas to become work nomads. Also not sure about the all the millions of people in Africa whose livelihood gets crushed by subsidised produce/corn from the West. Not sure about all the Indian farmers who are driven into suicide by the monopoly powers of seed suppliers. Not sure about India as a whole, now suffering from the third year in a row of a belated monsoon and horrific drought.
"Democracy means you don't everything you want, when you want it, all the time" ... "and occasionally comprise, and stay principled, but recognise that it's a long march towards progress"
He talks the talk, but even for a center-right guy, he doesn't walk the walk. Principles went out the window in Gitmo. Principles went out the window when the drivers behind the illegal war of aggression in Iraq were not prosecuted in accordance with the Nuremberg Principles. Principles went out the window when carpet surveillance pissed all over the Constitution. Principles went out the window when US military forces aid Al-Qaeda affiliates in Syria just because they oppose Assad. Even mentioning principles in the face of the gruesome, drone-driven terror campaigns in at least half a dozen countries makes me want to vomit.
And don't get me started on compromise. If you ban single-payer and drop the public option before negotiations begin, that's not compromise. That's theatre meant to mislead us plebs while you add an additional layer of "market" to an already dysfunctional market, which ends up profiting the insurance companies yet again.
Syntaxedsays...Dear God, I must agree with @radx, how can he say that when women are still kept as sex slaves? Or people are still worked to death? Or there is still war? What the hell?! Look at the bloody state of Europe right now, or perhaps Britain?! Or America for that matter, a radical Muslim just killed 50 members of the LGBT community!!!!!
And the world is BETTER?!
ugh, politicians...
