legacy0100says...What the heck is going on. Did they actually turn a whole river?
That's awesome, and alarming at the same time. This has the potential to create some radical ecologic issues.
ctrlaltbleachsays...I was thinking the same thing. Someone set my mind at ease and tell me they didn't just F some shit up!
legacy0100says...*promote this potential environmental calamity.
siftbotsays...Promoting this video back to the front page; last published Friday, September 16th, 2011 4:42pm PDT - promote requested by legacy0100.
residuesays...If there was a river that close to the ocean, it was probably draining into the ocean naturally not too far downstream of the diversion. Still, that's crazy
BoneRemakesays...Work Papers please.
zorsays...This video is from Waimea, Hawaii. At first I thought it was kind of strange that they knew to take advantage of this difference in fresh and ocean water levels. I found the area on the map and it looks like this river "delta" fills up with water because a dam of sand is formed from the big waves against a steep landscape. It is really an awesome situation!

Is he speaking Portuguese @4:45? Could be a bunch of Brazilians f*cking with Hawaiian ecology lol
ForgedRealityjokingly says...Meanwhile, people trying to raft down the river suddenly found themselves landlocked. "WHERE DA RIVER GO?"
rgroom1says...It looked like some sort of tidal pool, the biggest one i've seen. The sand will fill in eventually, and there will be plenty of smaller tidal pools for nature to live in.

I dunno what language it is, but he's a shouty bastard. I wish the uploader had normalised the level of the speech and the music.

So, Ecological Terrorists. I think they are in for a new type of waterboarding.
EDDsays...Impressive, but I honestly actually feel uncomfortable upvoting until I know whether this was illegal or not
Psychologicsays...I remember seeing this video on msn a while back. I tried to sift it, but it wouldn't take the embed at the time (several months ago).
According to the news report it's a seasonal pool caused by rain, so it's nothing unusual or destructive. They probably do this every year.
Edit: If people don't do this on their own then the government does it anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d9umTELgwE
evilspongebobsays...the music is from The Black Seeds. A fine, fine, fine New Zealand band. Brett Mackenzie (Flight of the Conchords) was a founding member!
