Michael Savage says Children with Autism are Faking It

Conserative radio talk show host Michael Savage, made the following statement on autism:
"Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism? ... A fraud, a racket... Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is."

Anyone who thinks children with autism are faking it is either woefully ignorant or completely moronic. I've worked with this population for several years now. You only have to see videos side by side of children with autism and children without to see that there's an obvious difference.

There are definitely going to be a handful of cases where it is parents pushing to get benefits, but that's a minority within the disease to the point where I think this guy needs to get diagnosed for some mental illnesses himself!

I do think autism is sad, especially severe cases, and this is just insulting. But while I believe that, I also think it's sad that only the very top percentage of the people that do well ( as in, gifted and talented kids ) get any reward and are actually usually punished for their behavior in trying to get ahead. No one can win with assholes like this.

T-mansays...

My daughter has been diagnosis with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. I sure would like to know where these benefits are. Can I just go down to the main office and pick them up? I'm spending over $20k a year out of pocket on a special school and therapies - those benefits sure would help...

Michael Savage can kiss my ass.

7977says...

Just as ignorant as Jenny McCarthy and her "cured" son. I find it very amusing that he talks about "benefits". It is hard enough for a child to be diagnosed, let alone the wait it takes to get therapy and services through the school. I work with this population and I can say that there aren't much benefits involved. Our schools are heavily underfunded and the help that is out their requires a long waiting list. As far as "money from the government" goes there isn't much there either. I have a sister with a disability who is not allowed to work if she receives social security which is only up to $600 a month. I want to know how an adult with disabilities can live off of that!

I do like this concept of "bratty children" as well. Yes, children are plotting big schemes to be "brats" to get money. There are bratty children, but only because their parents have conditioned their behavior that way

NetRunnersays...

It seems like every conservative media outlet in this country feels that the only thing wrong is that there isn't enough spanking at home.

It's become an entire "philosophy" based on a premise that there are no real problems, just people trying to game the system, and that all hardships are a direct result of those people ("minorities" he says in this instance).

Don't dare try to suggest we actually have government act in service to its citizens -- that's blasphemy. All of our tax dollars are meant for no-bid national defense contracts, oil subsidies, and banking firm bailouts.

People with autism clearly can't bring home the bribe lobbyist money those guys can, so they must just be "minorities" who are "faking" it for "benefits."

Michael Savage? Wait, let me think about that name for a second. Michael Savage....Michael Savage...Michael Sav...Oh wait! You mean the Michael Savage who:

- Said of gay marriage and homosexual parents that "It makes me want to puke,"and "I think it's child abuse,", though he hung out with VERY out homosexual Allen Ginsberg in his youth, writing him mash notes, in one of which he expressed his desire to shove a camera up the beat poet's anus to photograph his rectum. (No self-hating homosexuality there, I assure you.)

- Refers to non-white countries as turd world nations.

- Got fired from his call-in show on MSNBC after he told a gay caller to "Get AIDS and die, you pig."

- Calls feminists and liberals, respectively, "Femi-fascists" and "Commu-Nazis."

- And asked for the extermination of 100 million Muslims.

That Michael Savage? So what's the problem? He sounds like an intelligent and reasonable man to me.

yeah, heard about this recently, and knew a sift was coming.

personally, i think it's a shame that savage still has enough of an audience, that this bitter nonsense should even reach our ears. but i'll upvote, for archival purposes, so long as it's in my bullshit playlist, and the channels you assigned it: (wtf, terrible, lies, politics, fear)

and while i understand why one would classify the subject matter as such?
i wouldn't litter up rembar's (science) channel with this asshole.

jonnysays...

No offense intended, but why is this siftable?

First of all, it's not even a video. It's an audio track with an image.

Second, I can go to youtube and type in just about any random sequence of letters and find a similar opinion on the evils of minorities and welfare.

Seriously. Is this guy relevant? Is he the next Rush Limbaugh or something? Is there anything in this "video" that people want to hear?

T-mansays...

Jonny, he's the third most popular radio talk show host in the country with 8+ million listeners a week. He's also had several best selling books. The guy, unfortunately, is relevant.

Also, there have been other audio-only sifts. I guess if people vote for them, they're siftable.

12410says...

ok, ok I can see why you all hate this Savage guy but come on give me a break, I don't agree with a lot of the things he says but still I'd like to see all of you guys doing his job and answering his calls from listeners like you!

I'd like to see him work with these kids

fair enough - I thought he was just some random crank. wow - 8 million? wow.

Paybacksays...

Unfortunately, Savage is not popular because people agree with him. He is popular because intelligent people who disagree are culled from the on air list, and only illterate fools get on. People tune in to listen to him shred morons. Whenever someone "fools" the people vetting callers and is actually intelligent, he just O'Reillys them. (interupt, yell, kill mic)

Once you understand that he doesn't believe anything he says, and only says it to create controversy, you can shut up and stop feeding his ego and wallet. He is a shock jock, that's all. Don't elevate him beyond the pond scum he is.

poolcleanersays...

Ugh, my mother listens to this garbage on the radio. I hadn't realized how ridiculous this personality was until now because I simply blocked out the sounds from the speaker. No wonder she gets such horrid ideas in her head. Well... there's also the Southern Baptist church she attends. *shudder*

I love me mum, mind you, but she's incapable of avoiding this type of peer pressure. Ain't that a thing? A son, worried about the peer pressure his mom faces?

poolcleanersays...

I started listening to his radio broadcasts to see if he has any good opinions, and it was like sifting through a batch of foul tomatoes, looking for the ripe ones. (I used to volunteer at a food distribution center for the homeless, and digging through donated vegetables is almost as nasty as listening to his show.)

He loves to describe others as making him want to "puke", and, well, I couldn't describe him in any other way. The scary thing is that he's so genuinely passionate about his grotesque viewpoint. There's no logic, only a misplaced status quo. He preaches the doctrine of conformity at its basest level.

From his website:

The Autism Controversy

My comments about autism were meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community's attempt to label too many children or adults as "autistic."

Just as some drug companies have overdiagnosed "ADD" and "ADHD" to peddle dangerous speed-like drugs to children as young as 4 years of age, this cartel of doctors and drug companies is now creating a national panic by overdiagnosing "autism, for which there is no definitive medical diagnosis!

Many children are being victimized by being diagnosed with an "illness" which may not exist, in all cases. Just a few weeks ago doctors recommended dangerous anti-cholesterol drugs for children as young as 2 years of age! Without any scientific studies on the possible dangers of such drugs on children, corrupt doctors made this controversial, unscientific recommendation.

Increasingly, our children are being used as profit centers by a greedy, corrupt medical/pharmaceutical establishment. As the brother of a severely disabled person who suffered and died in a New York "snake-pit" of a "mental hospital," I know first-hand what true disability is.

To permit greedy doctors to include children in medical categories which may not be appropriate is a crime against that child and their family. Let the truly autistic be treated. Let the falsely diagnosed be free.

Eh...

11735says...

Sure, ASD is over diagnosed now, but part of the reason for that is because children with other developmental or behavior problems are likely to get help if that get a diagnosis of autism. The fact of the matter is that if a child needs some sort of behavioral therapy, they should be able to get it, regardless of their diagnosis.

7977says...

They don't prescribe medications to children with ASD, treatment is behavioral. Besides one of the most common myths on the cause of Autism is poisoning from vaccinations. I highly doubt that anyone who believes this would sign up to have their children put on meds. Again, I say that it is HARD to be diagnosed as health insurance companies don't want to pay the bills and most behavioral therapy is funded by the state. I really don't see what the benefits of this "over diagnosis is"

11735says...

I wish it were true that they didn't medicate kids with ASD, captbarbiturate, but most of the ASD children I've worked with were actually over medicated. Because the cause and mechanisms of the disorder is such a mystery, parents are often willing to try just about any possible treatment they can find.
