This isn't your therapist's office, we aren't going to ask you why. We'll just make a note in our little book of 'people we wish were on youtube instead'

I'm game. Why's that then?

If their captivity is for, say, a breeding programme, then that may be justified. But to keep them for us to gawk at is, to my mind, unnecessary and cruel. Animals, especially the larger ones like bears and big cats, can be seen rocking psychotically and displaying unnatural behaviour. We no longer condone circuses that use animals, and we shouldn't condone birds in cages (so cruel). I only ask, do we actually need zoos? If they purport to be for educational purposes, I would point to the wealth of brilliant, and beautiful, wild life documentaries out there, which show these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Interesting article over here http://animals.howstuffworks.com/animal-facts/zoos-good-or-bad.htm

Seems to be a bit of a mixed bag. Some animals like elephants do very badly in zoos, but they seem to be improving.

Thing I hate the most about the sift?

Someone has a heartfelt emotion, and assholes have to pile on.

You don't agree with someone's personal statement? Then follow your own advice and STFU already.

Zoo's aren't half as bad as private owners. Some bastards out there need to be shot for the way they treat animals.
You want to find out more? Go check out:

If you are in the area I would highly suggest a trip as they rescue cats from private owners across the country. It is simply amazing what they do and the excellent care they give these animals.
If you really want a special treat you can stay over night in the guest room. You get a special tour with the guy that started it all and have lion cages immediately outside you door. Simply amazing and a fantastic organization.

First off Anis, yes, anyone who is not completely enthrawled by your every thought is a troll, dont believe them, everything you are is special and important and the world needs to know about it.

secondly, watching any large mammal excerise the cognative prowess of play is fantastic! Serving to remind one and all of our common cellular ancestry ~ how beautiful it is to contemplate the relativity of all life on earth!

lastly, the sift is a fantastic venue for media that inspires imaginative intellectual thinking. This is largely due to its great agregation of interrested and coherent posters (the capn must exclude himself). If you feel as though i have suffered you some trollin, your defensiveness is a sign that this message weighs upon you. PLZ DONT INSIDE JOKE YOURSELF OUTLOUD, k thanks buy

i think it's kind of fucked that the top of the food chain puts the rest of the food chain on display.
IMHO of course.
It gives the impression of a kind of arrogance quite socialized into us by the legacy of organized religion...which teaches us that the world and everything in it is OUR domain.
and it ain't. we're just another species, and if we keep fucking off, we'll soon find out that the evolution of this planet may well not include us.

Contradicting yourself? Of course, it all depends on your point of view. And from my point of view, neither of those are true: the top of the food chain is naturally certain bacteria and viruses. And I'd like to see "just another species" send rockets to the moon.
