JEL of Anticon performs live sample-based music

JEL is a virtuoso of the digital sampler. Many hip-hop producers are expert at using the same tools he's mastered for in-studio production and composing pre-sequenced beats for playback, but few - if any - can match his talent for performing the work of an entire band, live, using only the micro-edited samples he chops into those machines.

Why shouldn't hip-hop beatmaking evolve to a point where the intricacy of a concert pianist is required for performance?

Kid's killin' it.

That's patently moronic. A computer could reproduce pretty much any piano concerto with MIDI, too, does that mean it isn't impressive when someone sits down and bangs out a complex piece of Rachmaninoff? The whole point is that while that could have been sequenced, it wasn't - every individual sound you heard was triggered by a button being pressed at a precise moment. He played the drums, bass and guitar all separately. It was an insanely complex and demanding feat of musical prowess. Bow down.

im not actually sure its *that* hard to do, but he could have saved alot of bother by just recording the drums into a set of loops.

anyhow, still a great performance, and impressivly done. upvote !

Anyone who thinks it looks fake can catch him at a live show, where he does the exact same thing. There's no point in faking it - it only tends to impress people who have a rudimentary grasp on sampler technology anyway, which is not like... you know, girls or anything.

I'm torn. One side of me respects him as a "composer" of sorts, in the same way I respect anyone who arranges music. On the live performance side of things, I kind of see it like someone who's really good at Guitar Hero-- talented, but in a different sort of way.

lgtoastsays...

Well the difference there of course is that guitar hero has a prescribed pattern - there's a logic to his composition here, but it's also very free in that the percussion is all micro-edited - I'd be surprised if the fills and pattern variations weren't spontaneous inventions.

I think percussion is the most apt analogy in comparing this to other music - regular players on the drum kit aren't just glorified dance-dance revolutionaries, are they?

---And nobody says this looks fake, amazing.

Oh fine then: this is definitely fake. That device he's got is just a telephone for people with fat fingers.

actually, i have a similar device to this. Its definatly not crazy hard, still pretty impressive for a nice long take. All a matter of finding some good samples to trigger.

....still got to get it to trigger like his though (play entire sample unless re-hit). bah !
