How IBM quietly pushed out 20,000 older workers

In a ProPublica feature that collected the stories of over 1,400 former IBM employees, it was estimated that a staggering 20,000 American employees ages 40 and over have been eliminated by the company. How does one of the country’s largest tech giants quietly push out this many older workers? Don’t we have laws to protect people at the end of their careers?

You don't think about this until you are in this "old" range.

As one who works for a top 10 global mega company and whose stock is 1/2 of what it was a year ago, this makes me wonder.

Companies need to be able to compete, and if they will do better with fewer employees then that's just unfortunate reality.

Eventually we will have to face the fact that we need a citizens dividend, there is not enough useful work to be done and people still need to live.

i grew up near Kingston, NY where IBM was the main employer for the mid-Hudson Valley and we all studied hard to get a job there. They closed operations in 1994 and the area will never recover.
