Henry Rollins vs Hipsters

highdileehosays...

Grade A douche, top of the line..."it's a title of a very famous book I wrote, it won a grammy..it's just like a book that a lot of musicians have seen." who's the rich elitist? ohh the hypocrisy. But anyone should expect to look foolish when you generalize an entire group, it's not much different from the mindset that racists have. And with that an upvote because Black Flag, Minor threat, and bad brains were the best thing to happen to music.

Bloocutsays...

Yeah, Henrys' getting surlier and surlier as he gets more world in him, watching the state of art and society reach new all-time lows every millisecond-Up-vote for running amok in the pretentious world of the talent-free and ineffectual.

kymbossays...

I'm not going to pretend to know what he thinks, but it seems to me that even his humour is intense - I'm ok with that, and I'm confident he's right about the clientele. And that 'trust fund' line was awesome!

Hipsters: 0

IS
GODLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be fair, Henry did approach the kids with already a preconception of what they are in his head even before talking to any of them. In fact he was actively provoking them and accusing them of these set images. Then again Rollins likes to engage. And the sad part is that despite Rollin's obvious and clear intent of provocation, they end up acting the exact same way Henry expected it to be.

They wound up validated Rollins' prejudicial point of view to the point where Rollins just had to sit back and watch them shat themselves. And Henry does something quite cruel. By showing great respect for Shirin Neshat he inversely was making it blatantly clear that he reserved no respect for what these young and impressionable kids were doing with their lives.

I couldn't even watch the whole thing. I usually like Henry but he is a bit to full of himself here, not to mention combative and judgmental. I'll bet there are hours of old footage of Henry complaining about being judged and how the non-black flag non-punk musicians are idiots and out of touch.

to paraphrase; those who forget history are doomed to repeat it...

I'm pretty sure it was the "hipsters" doing the provoking by saying things like "Henry Rollins is in the store?" and "Get in the van!". It was only after that that he approached them. They made sure he heard them and he made sure to call them on their idiocy. Seems to me he was fighting fire with fire.

Same here. He pretty much comes out right from the start hating on the Hipster for being elitist. I can respect that, in fact, I share the feeling. Problem is it becomes increasingly clear that his objection is that he's convinced that he's the superior elitist himself, and how dare they usurp his rightful throne. Yuck.

How funny.

'fuck being looked-up to by these poser kids!... okay well, maybe you're alright, and you... and this guy seems fine...'

He came in there with a lot of preconceptions, and wasn't about to let them not be true. Probably just nervous around someone he really respects.

I normally like Rollins but he comes off a douche here. I hate hipsters too, but damn!

I feel exactly the same way. Really disappointing to see Rollins behave like this.

He seriously thinks saying, "Henry Rollins is in the store?" and "Get in the Van," automatically means that they think Rollins is an old man sell out who is standing in the way of their hip new vibe and should just sit down and shut up? WTF?

highdileehosays...

^ I would agree with that if I thought he was still provocative, but nay. For the last 15 years he has just been an old man, bitter and out of touch with everything but himself.

Is that not all old men? Oh wait, I generalize... I mean almost all old men? I believe it is nearly all old men, in fact, the lot of people suck. I would be bitter too but right now I am raising three wonderful children and so they breathe life into me. Almost everyone else just makes me sad. And that is my optimist side! (Elections anyone?)

kymbossays...

Yeah, yeah, you knew him before he was famous, etc etc...

Sounds like we have ourselves a hipster!

Holy shit! That's Cake Shop! I saw a lame hipster concert there once.
Oh, I'm so much cooler than all of you...

Where else are you going to take an Iranian woman in exile, but the Cake Shop, that old punk rock mecca in the East Village?

What's really fucking crazy about this video is that, in the middle of the clip, Rollins starts talking to a chick I knew about 15 years ago!

Oh, I'm so much cooler than you.

I may be too old to be a "hipster", but I know quite a few of them. All of them would treat Henry Rollins with reverence and respect.

I think perhaps he'd forgotten to take his anxiety meds on that day.

shagen454says...

I just don't understand this at all. So, somehow Rollins shows up at the Cakeshop and walks in... for what reason? To have some sort of political conversation? For what? To show off some KillRockStars shit and a great Born Against record and then call it all elitist music? Then he says that he is old, washed up, sell-out and in the way and then goes and proves it by playing that role. Wow, Henry still just as terribly self-righteous as ever. Someone needs to force a 12 pack down this guys throat once and for all. It's ironic that he is with a woman who stands up for woman's rights in Iran because I swear Rollins detests women.

VoodooVsays...

Douchebag or no, I'm sure just about all celebrities are fed up with fans fawning over them. I can't think of a single celebrity that if they were to show up in my neighborhood, I'd leave them alone

Folks, NYC is one of the most expensive places to live in the entire world. There are a ton of young, college educated, silver spoon anarchists running around that city, many of whom proudly and consciously adopt a bohemian lifestyle. This is part of the hipster/indie/underground/alternative/etc. persona and one needs that cred when you move from NYC to LA to rub your self importance in everyone's face. Or maybe Henry simply doesn't care for elitists in general, as it is he rubs elbows with people doing truly great things with their lives, like Shirin Neshat.

P.S. older folks are always disapproving of young folks ;-)
