Health Insurance Company Sues Maine To Guarantee Profit

Anthem Blue Cross sues the state of Maine to guarantee them a 3% profit margin. Maine refused. This is why we need health insurance reform.

The sad fact is, THIS, is going on in the other 49 states of the Union on a daily basis. It is easy to dismiss someone you dont know, or care about. Rather easy to demonize them. In this video, the production group is demonizing the company directly, and health care system at large. It would have been good, to have the health care company defend itself on the charges. Frankly, I do not think I could take a company rep serious, if he said this woman could not be treated as her doctor perscriped, given that the same company has a high profit margin.

The statistics given, should be listed with a source. While the numbers sound fantastic, I'd like to know where those numbers come from in their original form. Its not that I distrust what the production team are doing, I'd like to read the information myself. I feel this *IS* important, as the other side of the arguement, typically does not want to show their sources. As those sources more often then not, come from a bias base (i.e. a 'think-tank' that opposes health care reform, because it gets it money from the health care industry).

I certainly hope that woman gets what ever treatment she needs. NO ONE, should suffer, because some citizens in our country are selfish.

How the fuck is this even possible. I must be terribly ignorant when it comes to the law. Apparently, the REAL way to make money in this country is to demand I make money every year from my state. If for some reason my state says "Someone get him the hell out of here," I can sue the state for not guaranteeing that I make a profit?

I know you're probably thinking, "Wait JJ that's insane" Ok are you saying that businesses can do this then? Like if I stated my own business? Again, on what basis can they sue the state because the state wont assure them of said profits?

WHAT THE FUCK i am so sick of this insanity.

Provided you have the money to buy off all the people you need to, yes, that is exactly how it appears to work.

(Check into NAFTA chapter 11 disputes. They're pretty sickening.... But make sure you have health insurance in case the greed actually makes you ill.)

This whole debate over health care boils down to a single issue IMO - are we going to keep our system of for profit (ie. insurance) paid health care or replace it with some type of a non profit plan. The answer seems obvious to me but the profits involved here are so great that it is going to be extremely difficult, perhaps impossible, to wrench control out of the hands of the insurance companies and their lobby.
I have realistic expectations for what I get from my insurance company because, after all, they are a business and in our capitalistic society businesses exist and prosper when they make profits. I have no delusions that they are here to help me nor do I expect them to care about my well being when I decrease their profitability by getting sick. It is strictly a business arrangement and should be seen as such.
On the other hand, if we change this process and eliminate the profit motive from our health care management, I would expect the money that we waste now providing the profits insurance companies are happy to take would be used to provide care to those that can not afford health care or who have been turned away by the insurance companies.
So I must pose the question this way, is it morally or ethically acceptable for us, as a society, to ignore pain and suffering unless we can meet our shareholders demands for profit? I think not.

Insurance companies are in the business of redistributing wealth.

...let that sink in a little.

The problem is, they take huge chunks off the top, because they're for-profit, and CEO's need gold waterbeds just like everyone else...and since they are also in the business of gambling, they need to stack the deck by lobbying for house-friendly legislation, which also costs.

Therefore, they need alot more of your wealth, so they can redistribute it when necessary, and still afford to go on safari and get platinum-plated trapper-keepers for their kids.

Does it make sense to pay for all that overhead because you think it's your choice? Sounds like foolishness...if only there were another option....

Some of the sifters need a few classes in basic economics. If you think government is 'non-profit' then I have a bridge to sell you.

I don't think anyone said that, but I think you just suggested the next bunch of assholes on the chopping block. Good work, we'll make a functioning left winger out of you yet...

Why is the US the only country in the western world were the health care industry is a private industry?

Oh thats right, ever since Regan, Money is God in the good old US of A. Comprehensive health care reform that is more beneficial to the people rather than the corporations is unlikely as long as they are able to 'donate' millions of dollars for the votes and we are limited to a few thousand per person.

Money runs this country and it's pathetic and will continue to get worse until we can get corporations out of our politics.

Surprisingly, I agree with this sentiment - but probably not the way you think. Money in politics really is a bad thing, but I think our biggest problem is not companies with wads of cash bribing our politicians. The problem is that our corrupt career politicians. Money is like water. It will find a way into the political process no matter what you do because people who go to congress look at the role as a CAREER more than a chance to serve. And when politicians think of the gig as a career, they natually look at how to get the most money out of it they can. Term limits. One term for the House and Senate, and then you're banned from politics for life. That's the solution.
