Grey Diamonds optical illusion

There are no camera tricks or editing involved, just a great illusion.

Think about gradients.

Ahhh, okay. I was actually thinking that the diamonds looked gradient, but only now do I understand. All the diamonds are identical, including the cut-out, but they're shaded from top to bottom, making each row look different. Nifty.

The very bottom half diamonds are actually lighter, notice he never puts the control diamond near them, then the contrast is maxed at the top with the white background. This suckers your brain into thinking they get darker as they go up.

This is why DeGrasse Tyson says that eye-witness accounts are the worst evidence possible - your brain can go haywire with the simplest of tricks.

All the diamonds are the same. It's quite simple. I just mocked up an example in Photoshop.

Each shape is exactly the same; duplicated and moved. They are all filled with the same gradient which goes from the html color #654e3c to #897664. The light ends being close to the dark ends makes it appear as if the shapes are getting darker toward the bottom. The light tan at the top reinforces the appearance, but if you crop that off, the effect is the same, but maybe slightly less "believable."

If you've a bit paper handy you can cover up the dark half of the diamonds, so you can compare the lighter parts of the gradients, they should appear about the same color.

Funniest part:

Take the picture ForgedReality posted. Right click, copy image. Paste in MS Paint. Use the square selection tool to take a piece of the picture. Move it up and down.

Marvel as you see the colour get lighter and darker as you move it up and down the pic.

Weeeeeeeeird.
