Employee at Publix Follows Kids Around the Store

Kids videotape an employee at Publix following them up and down the aisles. They think it is because he is racist.

Not surprising. If any of you had a black friend as a kid you found this out from them either at the time or later on. It just further reminds you that black people live in a different America than white people.

definitely not racist, I used to work in loss prevention for a department store, and we followed around anyone with large bag, backpack, duffel, or sweatpants with large pockets, etc. the store is not public property and management can refuse to serve anyone for any reason. And if the eye in sky sees someone recording on smartphones, or something funky going on even if it's legit, they would call a loss prevention guy like me to tail them and make sure all is well. If I saw funky bulges, or caught them red handed stealing I used my radio and notifed security so when person went to exit store they were grabbed and wrist tied with plastic ties until police arrived. But most times I just kept eyes on our merchandise until they got what they needed and left, regardless of race, sex, etc.

that loss prevention worker is doing a great job

I too worked as a plain clothes security officer (loss prevention) in a major department store, and I can't fathom that a professional loss prevention department worth a shit would make a stop solely based on a "funky bulge". I could only assume bad stops and lawsuits would be a constant issue for any department operating that way. Also I seriously doubt that dude was in ln loss prevention dressed like that. If you're trying to catch people stealing you don't wear clothes that make you stand out like a sore thumb. I'm guessing he was just a store employee. Most likely management.

Also ive had a few African American roommates and friends and it was very apparent that store owners and or employees would watch them based on skin color. It NEVER happened to me with my white friends ONLY with my black friends, and it happened quite a bit.

just my two cents

Well never had any lawsuits, but of course people understand that loss prevention will follow you around an upscale store. Did it in Macy's in New York for 10 years. People whined and were asked to leave if they didn't like the policy. And if people came in with baggy clothes or pants sagging, they were also asked to leave the store. Macy's wasn't a public park to goof off in. And on the door they reserve the right to refuse service to any one on any reason.

but that's upscale "Snooty" stores for ya, but hey, it paid damn well.

and I wore a suit, but we did have plain clothes that did work in same department, but the suit was to put public pressure as everyone knew what I was up to when I followed a customer. And if someone refused to empty a pocket, a cop was available to check them and if they were clear they were free to go.

IT was a bit gestapo I admit, but that's how it works in large cities, and there has been no lawsuits and won't be, cause the company has the right to run their business any way they wish. If customers quit buying the stuff in mass then of course they'd change or whatnot, but customers won't, plus Macy's and many upscale stores in New York pride them self on being assholes so they can sell to a specific demographic, rich/celebs/etc. that demographic won't be caught dead in a crappy store like Walmart for most part.

@shang the point is that yes this is racist. It happens constantly, and while it may not be 100% of the time based on race, there's too much anecdotal evidence for it to be bullshit.

It's like Stop and Frisk, everything about it seems wrong, smells wrong, and is wrong. The arguments are stupid and should've been put to bed awhile ago, but we're still a very racist country.

@shang and @eric3579 when i was younger we used to mess with you guys all the time.
mainly due to boredom and a bad case of assholitis.

walk around the store, look suspicious and constantly pick stuff up and then put it back on another shelf.

we could almost always get one of you guys to bite.

you guys were always so polite when we tried to leave the store.
"excuse me sir,but could you empty your pockets and open your jacket?"
"sure thing man".

35 cents,keys and a big red wrapper.

at least we brought some excitement to your day.
you're welcome.

Definitely not limited to race, but minorities and people who we've been trained to see as lower-income/lower class get this treatment much more.
It makes me rage, that corporations have effectively conditioned their employees that everyone is a suspected thief, and to be militant in their attempt to expose someone.
Some people need help, some people need care, and some people are sick of living in a society where we have plenty, kept behind an invisible wall of enterprise, but trained every day to want it.

It is not appropriate to assume the operation of this guys mind. Hey may well follow around every kid that comes into his store with a backpack due to recent thefts.

it COULD be racist, or it could also be his default behavior for anyone younger than 'x' age in his store. Or heck, maybe he trusts no one.

To presume he is racist without any understanding of the man, better context, or insight into his behavior. is itself negative for race relations. It does nothing but drive the wedge.

Artician, minorities like Asian-Americans have lower average crime rates than the White-American average.

So it seems like you're talking about NAM (non-Asian minority) culture, but you're instead using the blanket term "minorities" inaccurately.

Rationalist African-Americans tend to dress so people will know from looking at them that they reject ghetto culture.

Aren't we talking about culture, but pretending we're talking about race?

For example, conservatives dislike ghetto crime, but they've wanted Herman Cain and Allen West to be their presidential candidates.

I don't know about you guys, but when a store security person asks to inspect my bag, I politely decline on account of having not stolen anything, and leave with my purchases.

Fuck your store policy, ban me if you don't want my money.

I'm still raging about the time this security lady tried to pull me aside at the Best Buy checkout in 2009. Fuck you lady.. I still avoid going to Best Buy because of the sour taste you left in my mouth!
