One has to ask (I'm sure someone actually has actually, I haven't looked around) Hitchens whether he'd smoked and drank so much if he knew it would lead to this? You'd have to be pretty close to certain that the smoking has lead to this cancer, surely?

He might, of course, say 'Absolutely, I've enjoyed ever last fag and would do it again'... or he might say 'No... I really could have found something else to spend my money and time on'.

It's just sad to see someone's life being cut short over something so very, very avoidable.

From his Vanity Fair article:

"In one way, I suppose, I have been “in denial” for some time, knowingly burning the candle at both ends and finding that it often gives a lovely light. But for precisely that reason, I can’t see myself smiting my brow with shock or hear myself whining about how it’s all so unfair: I have been taunting the Reaper into taking a free scythe in my direction and have now succumbed to something so predictable and banal that it bores even me."

He doesn't expect any sympathy. In his CNN interview he does suggest to those watching that having "a few less cocktails" would be good advice...

This is pretty much an identical interview to the one Hitchens did with Anderson Cooper the other day. I wish people would think of more interesting questions to ask him -- more about the memoir he just wrote, especially. Not this bullshit, "do you care if people pray about you", "will you turn religious on your deathbed". All nonsense.

And watch for religious nuts to spin cancer into divine intervention in 3-2-1-GO!

Blessings happen to both good and bad people. Tragedy happens to both good and bad people. Death and disease is due to a cursed world. Thus both good and bad people will suffer and die.

Anyone claiming it was divine intervention is boasting where they shouldn't be.
