It's about expected utility versus risk. As an investment, it's a loser, but a buck or two is a minimal, perhaps negligible risk, and just the value of thinking about winning might be worth it to many people.

What makes less sense to me is why anybody thinks they're going to be happier with a half billion dollars than with ten million, and so accepts the much worse odds against winning to go for it.

There are 2,900 millionaires in the UK created by the lottery. I agree, the odds of winning are extremely remote, but you have to be in it to win it. I saw recently a video of a guy in Australia who, having won it once, was re-enacting it-at the same shop- for the cameras. You guessed it, he won again, $250,000. The lottery is a chance to dream once a week and, who knows, it could be you.

And that's why I don't gamble!

Bill Nye is probably the smartest man on TV. Wait I know let's have him and Neil DeGrasse Tyson star in a sitcom it will be like "Big Bang Theory" only you know actually smart.

Buying a couple of lottery tickets is fun. But I see people who clearly don't have much money buying buttloads of tickets, desperately hoping.

I buy lottery tickets myself. Every December. I buy them for my co-workers to scratch off at our annual Christmas dinner. I even buy one for myself, so I can join in the laughter. And I like that some portion of the proceeds goes to schools.

It is the desperate, low income buyers that I ... mourn for.
