It looks like it wants the warmth from his carotid artery. I had a kitten that used to sleep on my neck for the same reason. I would wake up to a cat beard every morning.

I had an orange cat much like this one when I was quite young. It slept with me and always cuddled up with it's nose in my neck, again much like this one is doing.
