How to dock your boat like a Boss

Ickster says...

After watching the video, I'm disappointed to learn it's an anti-drinking while boating PSA.

I was hoping it was anti-douchebaggery.

Swat Team Completely Destroys Home Chasing Shoplifter

Ickster says...

Jesus fucking christ.

One guy with a gun on being chased on suspicion of shoplifting warrants that? They could've afforded to sit outside for days until the guy gave up, but apparently had way too much of a hard-on about being bad-ass soldier-types.

Assembling an RS-25 Engine -- In Just Two Minutes

Ickster says...

I'm actually surprised that there wasn't more paperwork in evidence--not from a bureaucratic perspective , but from a checklist perspective.

I'm sure it's there somewhere, but I missed it.

The Engineer Who Keeps Pratt Institutes Steam Plant Running

Ickster says...

According to the link in the description, it's actually a power plant, although it's no longer in use. There's a steam plant on site as well, but what was shown in the video is the preserved power plant, still in working order (although it's unclear if the engines are actually attached to dynamos, so I don't know if they could actually generate electricity).

small nitpick on description - I think it's a "steam plant" he works in, not a "power plant". Steam plants are used to centrally heat water for a network of buildings, in this case a campus. It's more efficient than having boilers in every building.

Don't ever want to cross a street again. Ever

Ickster says...

Isn't that what they teach in driving school under the name "Defensive Driving"?

I was thinking of that while watching the video because I was amazed at the number of people who could've avoided being hit* had they looked before starting into the intersection rather than just blindly following the light.

*Not blaming them for the collision--just observing that they're putting themselves in danger by not paying attention.

Knowing that there's always someone out there who's gonna try to run red light, I've developed the habit of looking both ways before going -- yes the same system for pedestrian, adapted for driving. Yes, I admit that there were a couple of times I accidentally ran reds. But any sane driver out there knows that if you don't know the timing of the yellow as it transitions to red, you're better off stopping anyway.

Brilliantly Simple Rotary Wood Splitter

Ickster says...

I wonder if this is really an improvement over other methods. I bet that wood has to be really dry for it to work so easily; I can imagine something like a fresh elm log getting stuck on that bit and wrenching the motor right off its mounts.
