delenda est

http://tinyurl.com/335p6g

It's quantummushroom's newest bit of hate speech, and I don't think the community should tolerate it anymore.

"delenda est" means "must be destroyed", and QM has so far applied it to Mecca, Tehran, and Fallujah inside VideoSift posts.

Would the mods please act? Thank you.

hmmmmm...that post was 69 days ago...perhaps all the shit-shoving has done qm some good, on the post in question, Farhad does a good job laying down the Latin law with a red pencil, and as always, with grace.

I suggest grace, seasoned with the usual, vote for nothing of qm's iffn' ya can't stands it..

The written word, his own, upon reflection, may serve or assist his own or others, self-conscious awareness....

always one of them, suppose.....he has not tucked tail, after all this time, unlike some...

Personal beef it sounds like, I got mine, and am kind, patient, and loving, in my assholitude....!

joedirt says...

I'm not sure "calling-out" community members in SiftTalk is productive. Why not save it for his next post (which are meant to be inflammatory). I'm sure people could come up with similar comments I have written.

I'm not sure his ignorant use of improper latin is that big of a deal, I mean we know his ignorant ramblings are verbatim talking points he read on some hate-filled forum somewhere. I still hope he is intelligent enough to realize that once he starts thinking for himself and not surrounding himself with like-(close)-minded parroting dittos he may come to realize how wrong he has been, and all because of cute, simplistic ignorant rantings that sound "correct".

Look, I listened to Rush Limbaugh everyday for a decade and I probably used to think a lot like QM currently does. Maybe he'll go to college, or maybe he'll go to a local bar full of regulars. Maybe he'll talk to average Americans or even people from different countries. Maybe he'll even go to a mosque and sit through a prayer service. Maybe it is possible that he won't be closed minded forever.

But, I do not necessarily think he is a racist hater. Just a sad closed-minded forum troll who likes to say inflammatory things and repeat wingnut talking points he has read on other forums and general internets.

joedirt says...

the eskimo / inuit snow thing is obviously an urban legend.

English probably has just as many words for snow. sleet, hail, powder, slushy, icy, (ok, well ask a snowboarder they probably have more words )..

gorgonheap says...

If he's honestly hurting someone I can understand a proper punishment. However we all have the right to freedom of speech. One that all members of the sift seem to use on a frequent basis. You have a right to disagree but QM has just as much a right to express his\her own feelings.

theo47 says...

Great; let's defend intolerance under the guise of free speech.

I'm real proud of the fact that the VS community can ban a self-linker in seconds flat, but de facto endorse calls for genocide.

Way to go, everybody.

Tofumar says...

"Great; let's defend intolerance under the guise of free speech."

Theo, you seem like a really nice person who has all the right intentions. But with all due respect, I don't need the likes of you looking out for me. I'm an ex-muslim with family in Mecca. My parents and siblings are still practicing Muslims. If I'm tough-minded enough to put up with QM's bullshit, you should be too.

Besides, whenever the guy makes comments like that he turns himself into a laughing stock. Even the other pro Iraq war Republicans are ridiculing him now, on the very thread you are worried about. Personally, that's exactly the kind of ideological opponent I don't mind having around: the kind who says things so damn stupid, he actually makes other like-minded folks wanna switch sides.

Just my 2 cents.

Peace,

Tofumar

theo47 says...

I'm not endorsing some kind of quashing of free speech; I'm saying this falls under community standards, and VS' community is supposed to be one of its selling points.

Do I want to be a part of a community that looks the other way at this sort of nonsense? I don't know.

The government will come after you if you threaten the life of the President, even online - we can't escort one lowlife out the door if he threatens millions, a way of life?

Tofumar says...

But this douche has no power! He's advocating violence, sure, but he's so impotent he couldn't incite it even if he wanted to! In other words, there's no ACTUAL threat. It's just some violent neocon wet-dream; one he wouldn't have the balls to recount in front of any Muslims outside an internet comment thread.

Regarding VS standards, you know far more about the technicalities there than I do. As you know, I haven't been around as an active member very long, and if it were any other issue I would've already deferred to you. But the thought of throwing people out--even those like QM--just makes me feel icky. I hope you understand.

That being said, I think I'll leave the rest of this discussion to those who have the power (and those who know a bit more about Sift rules). I don't think I have the stomach to say any more in defense of the likes of Captain Halfwit.

Peace.

joedirt says...

U cannot be any bit serious? Is this an effort to "prove" QM is right about whiny libhurals as he says?

First of all, all three example you gave are of cities, so three cities that he "wants destroyed" and I believe in three different regions covering at least two types of Muslims. And I'm not sure it is as offensive as "kill all them (blanks)"

Look, in a short while, there will be comment moderation, so nasty comments can be hidden. Until then, you have the right to call out any offensive comments, but I don't think three or however many is some real big problem. Sure he is purposefully offensive, but so am I.

And I really, really don't want to be part of anything that "escorts people out the door" based and their little 'kill 'em all' rant.

While you are at it, "Rotty" or whatever the rotweiler guy uses the term "muzzie" which I guess is a pretty negative slang for Muslim in UK, or NZ or something. That I find a whole lot more offensive than trying-to-be-cute-latin-reference.

theo47 says...

...You shall not, shall not agree to, and shall not authorize or encourage any third party to: (i) use the Service to upload, transmit or otherwise distribute any content that is unlawful, defamatory, harassing, abusive, fraudulent, obscene, contains viruses, or is otherwise objectionable as reasonably determined by VideoSift; blah blah blah...

Deano says...

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing QM's comments in a while but if they are that bad then surely the Admins can have a word? Even if just one person wants to make a complaint it doesn't mean that the complaint lacks merit. Sometimes direct action is needed rather than hoping for the community to keep the sift universe in order.

MINK says...

yeah actually theo47, you're right about the selflinking thing being number one taboo here, and imo talking about destroying cities is definitely over the top, but waddyagonnado?

one thing that amuses me about so called "liberals" is they always want to ban people who disagree, to hide reality under the carpet so they can pretend the world is safe and lovely. "Free speech as long as you are nice and we agree with you!"

I have seen some disgusting comments from "progressive" atheists about religious people for example, followed by 10 cheerleaders and 78 upvotes.

Constitutional_Patriot says...

"one thing that amuses me about so called "liberals" is they always want to ban people who disagree"

This is one thing that pisses me off... people that associate an entire group of people to a certain way of thinking just because a few of the people that are in said group wishes for something bad. Not all "liberals" want to ban people from free speech... actually most welcome it. To be honest I've been hearing this rant from the far right for way too long and have had to endure their spouting constantly calling for the left to "shutup".

As for Quantumushroom - although I have a very low opinion of him, has the right to free speech just as much as any of us here. I welcome his comments. It's good to hear the rants of an extremely close-minded individual. It actually reinforces the open-minded rationale of others.

gorgonheap says...

Funny Theo you talk about tolerance but seem to show so little of it. Isn't that a bit of a double standard? So what if QM's idea's our not in fashion? Just because you disagree with his views doesn't mean that he should be banned. A lot of people make disparaging remarks about my religious beliefs. Stuff I hold sacred is mocked. But that doesn't give me a right to have a vendetta against someone. In fact if anything it makes that persons hate reflect more on their character. And if I lost it it would bring me down to their level. Seems to me you and QM have somethings in common.

MINK says...

constitutional_patriot, i'm with you man, just didn't know how to call the group i was criticising, hence the airquotes.

i'm also with gorgonheap on this one. it's horrible when everybody agrees and you forget what you are agreeing about. nice to have QM remind me! And it's an interesting puzzle working out whether or not he is actually serious. Noted by his absence in this thread.

anyway i am neither "liberal" nor "conservative" or any other weak banner people cling to. I am MINK. You all aint. I'm fine with that.

btw i want to downvote comment downvoting, unless the rules are very very strict and only gold stars can downvote. Otherwise it's just gay. Did I say gay? I meant weak and ineffectual.

quantumushroom says...

Sigh. You guys are putting way too much effort into this, but I appreciate it.

If you wish to read on, here are my thoughts:

First things first, I write what I feel like. I try not to attack anyone personally, but as I'm human, it sometimes happens. I don't consider anything I've written to be "troll-worthy" because unlike a real troll, I'm ready to defend what I say.

When I perceive insults to my God, my country, the military that protects me (and that I served in honorably) my President (if not the man, at least the Office) my Whatever, I become angry. My reactions, contrary to the undeniable vibe of PC Thoughtcrime Patrol around here, are healthy and normal.

Anyone who wants to drop me a line is welcome to. I've had civil discourse with many of you and have found common ground more times than I would've guessed. I upvote anything and everything I've found delightful even if it's posted by someone who "hates" me.

All I've done here is express opinions. MY opinions. Hate is a waste of time. I understand that VS is or can be a profit-making venture and that my continued input around here depends on not breaking certain rules. But arbitrary limits on free speech (excluding the obvious like threats and pure ad hominem attacks) aren't my bag.

Posting my authentic values, beliefs and opinions is what I do. That includes the occasional joke. Even in poor taste.

A special note: there's no sane way to discuss "race" any more. I'm not going to play anyone's game about who is racist and why. What offends me is when others who have used racist language at some point in their past, made racist assumptions and made decisions based on race, have the GAUL to single out others for the same "crime" they themselves commit. We are ALL guilty of having been prejudiced now or then, but prejudice is an event, not a person. You can be just as offended by Chris Rock saying n*gger as Archie Bunker. I know this little speech of mine won't stop anyone from branding others (me)with the label--it's too damned easy--but, for the children, I implore you, come up with something better if you want to throw down, because the average leftist who patronizes minorities and treats them like children is just as bad as the klan guy.

Another note: yes, I give "leftists" a lot of crap, but I get it right back. I do understand that each of you is not a robot, that you're real people with political opinions on a wide variety of topics that can and do vary wildly. I'm guilty of generalizing "and shit" but so is everyone. We all have a shorthand opinions and we all can overdo it. Try not to take it all too seriously.

A THIRD special note: at times theo47 has gone above and beyond in attacking me personally, and it appears he sometimes annoys others as well. I would request that he not be singled out for harsh treatment any more than me, and certainly don't ban him.

And the Muslim thing: historical evidence has shown that Islam has had an "us or them" mentality for centuries. Even the "moderates" do not tolerate other religions and beliefs and in every country where Muslims become a majority, they start trouble. I will NOT apologize for criticizing what I deem to be a legitimate worldwide threat to advanced free societies by fanatics who have distorted their OWN faith beyond recognition. Islam needs serious reform, my guess is they won't do in 10 or 30 years what they haven't done in centuries, and so, delenda est. As needed.

Have a good night and pleasant tomorrow,

Q to the M

You have no enemies, you say?
Alas, my friend, the boast is poor;
He who has mingled in the fray
Of duty, that the brave endure,
Must have made foes! If you have none,
Small is the work that you have done.
You've hit no traitor on the hip,
You've dashed no cup from perjured lip,
You've never turned the wrong to right,
You've been a coward in the fight.

I have to admit, QM - that was a very lucid and well-constructed reply. The kind of moderate, thoughtful attitude you take in the above comment though, does not jibe with the majority of your drive-by comments in other threads.

Sorry, but your participation, for the most part does lean to the trollish. Primarily because you post short quips - designed to incite outrage - and then you do not follow-up, elaborate or concede any points.

No one is going to be banned here for that kind of commenting. However, the upcoming comment moderation system may have an effect on your contributions.

joedirt says...

Jebus,

I was starting to fall in love with QM all over again, and then he had to pull out that last paragraph... ah, classic plot twist!

Them [FILL IN THE BLANK] start trouble (Jews, Blacks, Mexicans, etc. etc.)

QM, I know you are wholly ignorant on pre 1500s western civ, but really.. You do realize that Muslims have been the most tolerant conquerers and occupiers throughout history. The only real example of Muslim majority countries that don't tolerate other religions would be the friends of your President.. You know the country that provided the most terrists on 9|| and the country that provides the most insurgents into Iraq. You know, the country that provided Bush with his early money and jobs. You know which one... (Ok, maybe also Pakistan and a few minor others, but the major countries have their fair share of Christians and other believers living peacefully alongside the 'trouble makers')

MINK says...

^ oh look, QM isn't a total retard. How strange that must be for some of you guys to try to take in!

THAT is the reason why you should go easy on the comment moderation, and why people should realise that online persona does not equal "real" person.

theo I think you are overreacting, this isn't so much a "free speech" thing as a "variety of contribution" thing. You are offended... so what? this isn't a place to shield you from offence, this is a place to expose yourself to it and engage it properly. Nobody here is dissing you or saying they agree with QM. QM never said "fuck all sand niggers" as far as i know. That would be totally different.

QM, you are wrong, and you are offensive to some people, but i have a lot of respect anyway. Respect is not endorsement.

Westerners have their fair share of "us against them" vibe, you know? How can you categorise and denigrate muslims WITHOUT an "us against them" vibe? I don't know how you can avoid seeing that duality.

I respect your standing up for the military, I too support the troops, I've even worn a uniform and saluted the royal family, hence I disagree with sending soldiers into a shitstorm for no reason except profit for rich people.

You won't make "liberals" quiet by trolling, just like you're not going to "solve" the "muslim" "problem" with any kind of violence. Iraq was a secular country before you went in and smashed the place up under a false pretext with no declaration of war. Maybe there could have been a better way to "modernise" their "backward" ways than raining down fire Old Testament style? Were you surprised when the whole "welcomed as liberators" thing went wrong? I wasn't.

We all fear fundamentalist pseusoislamic nutcases destroying our freedoms. That would be bad. However, your brand of "solution" is making things worse, not better. And your country can't afford it. And do you think the oil thing is a coincidence? And you have to destroy freedoms at home, making the whole exercise a laughable contradiction.

Keep on trolling! (well i prefer ranting but that's just me)

choggie says...

Any time-honored tactic, used effectively to control the predictable masses, has its drawbacks for its proctors-Race against race is an easy one, people distrust and fear what they do not understand-and hold dear, that which they believe necessary to survive-

We have all been duped in many ways similar, and have developed mechanisms to keep us fat and happy in delusion seasoned with healthy, innate, sensibilities-

Use any successful business, endeavor, or government as a model, trace it backward to its inception, and you will see the slow wearing down of fundamental principals, ethics, then finally morality...it becomes clear-Change is the greatest necessity, and the greatest fear, which every system must embrace....to become wary or distracted is the poison.
To remain dynamic, the challenge.......The Earth and her creatures are dynamic, and the enemy would like to keep things static, to enjoy the limited benefits of doing so......This is the state of affairs in the world now, and is exponentially growing more so, by the minute......headed towards the singularity, which the Black Hole is a perfect analogous representation of-we are very close, to seeing our own asses greet our heads, as the door is opened, and closed, and opened again, as we walk through backwards.

There can be no great change, without great struggle, and brothers and sisters, rest assured, there is a coming shitstorm of trouble ahead.....

We now return you to your regularly programmed schedule.

It's the height of hilarity to read QM saying "hate is a waste of time", as each and every one of his posts are soaked in it.

Comment moderation (i.e. "digging down") won't eliminate his moronic comments; it'll draw even more attention to them and fuel his dopey crusade.

He's right about VS being a commercial venture - and if the mods want the site to have the reputation of being unwilling to ban people who make threats, then it is to their financial detriment.

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Well, I certainly don't espouse QM's expressed views - but they are his (however trollish they may be).

I don't think banning him would do anything but create a martyr, and place a draconian chill across the whole site.

theo47 says...

I was going to ask if repeated calls for genocide are kosher, where the line is drawn - but clearly, there is no line.

Every other reputable site that allows comments has a system to notify moderators when someone is abusing their privileges; no one accuses Digg or Fark of Draconianism when they kiss obvious trolls goodbye.

As the racist comments thread above demonstrates, the number of people coming to VS to troll is multiplying; again, if that's the kind of behavior you want to tolerate, I'll go elsewhere and I imagine others will follow.

Or maybe you believe controversy will increase traffic, and you'll have a formerly great community at each other's throats. Either way, it's not something I'd want to support.

joedirt says...

yes, multiplying!! we went from ONE to TWO!! Sound the alarms, man the battlestations. I can't handle reading Videosift anymore from the three insensitive comments per week!

Digg has comment moderation in that comments get hidden if members vote it into obscurity. Fark is the most racist, genocidal, bigot site of any major forums I can think of. (And don't make me whip out my uid on fark, but it is lower than yours..) So I find it insanely laughable that you are using Fark as an example. And Fark has always been accused of their draconian practices of banning users.

I really am just about sick of this nonsense over a small number of comments that can be dealt with as they happen, just tell people they are out of line. I don't find any hatred or racism on this site, and I think there is an amazing level of discussion when you consider this is the internet and some of the videos and topics that have been openly discussed.

Trolls are all over the internet and most people have learned to ignore them.

choggie says...

Head in the sand??? Damn perception is such a pain in the ass.....so is linear thinking, Adolf......

We have a shining example of hope in qm, and Herr Theo would fire up the camps, and order some Cyclon-B for his private party-I have a wonderful reading suggestion fors ya T, "Eye in the Sky"-Phillip K. Dick

A short fictional romp, into six different worlds, seen through the eyes of six individuals who experience those worlds daily, yet on this particular day, they all get a taste of each others-Not too pretty, but very enlightening-

God I feel like a Bible verse is in order, one of my favorites, from a book I wish more Americans would goddamn read, so they can get a sense of their own fucking culture-

Luke 19:27

"But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me."
