comment up/downvoting: big anticlimax?

am i being dumb or is the comment voting thing a big anticlimax? is it even turned on? as a skeptic i would like to know how it's going before laughing and shouting "i told you so!!!!!" at the screen. it's not even turned on, is it?

I noticed the applaud quality thing, but didn't think it was turned on. I clicked it once just to see what it did and a message popped up saying I couldn't vote twice or something. I just clicked Zinfab's now and it gave an applaud quality. Shouldn't there be a confirmation box in case you accidentally click it?

I've noticed instead of using the inappropriate tag, some members have deleted offensive posts.. Why have the tag then if we're not going to use it.

We should tag instead of editorializing with our sift powers

bamdrew says...

oh, I was thinking the 5 quality votes were cumulative! what a fool i have been.

and that is a helluva comment by meow. just qualitied it myself.

I have yet to 'mark innappropriate'... What comes to mind as 'innapropriate' are things like "F*CK THIS VIDEO! ZIFNAB IS A BITCH!! VIDEOSIFT SUCKS A NUT!!" ... but there's not that many of those type comments on the fairly civil sift (and I'd probably be tempted to just mark that as 'spam' and help usher that person out the door).

If they're meant to be antonyms, maybe instead have Applaud Quality Comment and Mark-Down Comment, or Applaud Quality and Mark-as-Skippable,

... or Applaud Quality and Silence Ignorance!

choggie says...

Yeah?? Imagine if someone would have flagged my rant in politics talk, "inappropriate" instead of discarding it, knee-jerk....I could have gotten some quality inappropriates and what-not!! Still bugs me that this aspect of THAT, has yet to be discussed....feel like a homosexual cousin at a family reunion.....

MINK says...

so how is it working then? i have noticed no difference in the comment threads, they are still interesting and worth reading. is that because stuff is being stealth deleted before i see it?

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

From the FAQ:

Gold Star members can "applaud quality" for a great comment. Members who receive 5 applause for a single comment are awarded a star point (1 maximum per comment). Conversely, comments that are out of line and violate the above guidelines can be marked inappropriate by Gold Star members. 5 inappropriate votes by members will cause the comment to be deleted. Lastly, comment spam, wherein someone attempts to advertise a product or service via comment, may be flagged as spam. After 3 spam votes, the comment is deleted and the violating member's spam comment tally is incremented. If applicable (see star powers), once a member's spam tally reaches 2 the account is automatically banned and all comments associated with the user are deleted.

The gist of this thread is that comment moderation is being under-utilised. I would agree with that. We'll look at ways of making it more useful.

1)

No. Confirmation boxes sucks, especially for something you use often. Could be optional, maybe.

2) i still really think that "inappropriate" should not totally hide the post, but have it default "collapsed", so people can choose werther to read it or not.

3) if a comment is both applauded and inappropriate, nothing should be done, and someone of "the big guys" should have a look to know wtf is going on

I think someone totally missed the idea of what spam is. We might want to clarify that.

The other night I'm browsing recent comments and see Krupo complain as he marked a video dead that he really wanted to see it, so I looked to see if I could find a copy and found one from the creator which was unlikely to be deleted again for that reason which I posted. Owner of the post which got fixed dropped me a note to say thanks, as far as I was concerned no big deal one way or the other and it was done with. So I thought.

I was just browsing recent messages and noticed that someone had marked it as spam.

If posting a link to an author video for one which had just been declared dead is spam we're going to have problems finding replacements. I don't know who did it but damned if I'm going to be making any more suggestions given the penalties for that stuff with recent changes. Not as long as we've got a gold star with that as a standard.

Lucky looked at this thread shortly after I posted, that should do I'd guess, they know. Right now I don't care to pursue it further. With things heating up on the campaigns and the anniversary of 9-11 things seem about as tense here as they've been in a while with way too much name calling and assumptions about educations, backgrounds, and other aspects of the sort in place of arguments. That's the type of thing I came here to avoid.

I'm trying to quit a 30 year smoking habit at the moment and just don't need additional challenges. I'm on vacation for a while.

It occurs to me that by requiring a member have a gold star before allowing them to express their opinion might really cripple such a system. I submit that it would be more valuable if all/more members could moderate (to use the slashdot terminology) and the rewards and punishments were less severe. Perhaps you can weigh the opinions of gold stars more or something.

lucky760 says...

For the record, winkler1 accidentally flagged drattus' comment as spam unintentionally. Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner but I didn't see the initial comment on the matter until much later. The accidental spam flag will be deleted.

I understand your sentiment, xxovercastxx, but the siftocracy of VideoSift is an enormous part of its success. People who contribute more, for longer, can implicitly be trusted more as responsible individuals. This gives these responsibilities greater value in the community at the same time protecting the community from abuse. It would be pretty awful if anyone could join up and go around deleting comments and causing havoc. But that's just my opinion.

drattus says...

I see what happened, profile reply is right above the flag spam option and it could easily be hit by mistake. He did drop me a note to say thanks for the link and I've no doubts it was an accident coming from him. I was a bit pissed at first and wondering what's going on but that makes sense. Maybe we should add a confirm for that one, though not the others. I bet it's an accident we'll see again now that I've noticed it.

As far as gold stars and such, I like the way the system has been so far. Meritocracy of sorts. The people who post the most vids should have the most say about how that part of the system runs, they've the bigger stake in it, but outside of that we've all got a right to opinions and I've never felt otherwise. If it's a good one they seem to take it from anyone. As long as these things are mistakes and we don't get a rogue gold at some point it's a good system. If we do get one I trust they'd deal with it.

BTW, thanks for looking into it Lucky.

MINK says...

ok blah blah moderation, looking into it, wrong button, gold members, blah.

i am not saying the system isn't "useful" enough, i am saying we don't even need it, do we? Am i just lucky enough to never read a comment thread with bad comments in it? I mean it just hardly ever happens, right?

So then a tiny problem gets a big complicated solution.
