Yet Another New Feature

It wouldn't be a day of the week without resident code ninja Lucky delivering another quality feature. There wasn't really a demand in the community for this, but we thought you guys would enjoy it.

On the front page you may notice a new link to "classic", which is just another way of looking at all of the videos. This page is every video that has ever been *promoted. So anything you promote will show up in there.

Please stop with the features.
My life has become extremely difficult since finding VideoSift and I'm pretty sure I'm on the verge of becoming single again.
Close the site down and let me interact with loved ones.

Before bed each night, my (nearly) 4 year old daughter and I read a book and then gather around the VideoSift for some beloved Sifts. Her eyes fill with joy as she enjoys Emiliana Torrini's Sunny Road, and a sneezing panda, and a farting pig.

Many times, she asks to see Uncle James', oohaah's, and swinginpagan's 'metal' hands photo. And soon, I will teach her to bellow "SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!!"

Ahhhhh . . .Videosift.

Yup yup yup...this is a family fun spot. My son has turned all the kids in the neighborhood onto this place, but I have to follow him around with a "You have to clear the 'NSFW' videos with your parents!!!!"

Seriously...this place has become a talking point in our family. "Did you see that cat video on VideoSift???"

James Roe says...

If we added a feature that hid nsfw videos from people that were not logged in do you think you would feel comfortable letting your kids surf the sift? I am not sure that there is any real way to make the site kid safe, but it is certainly something that we would think about.

I never noticed that feature! (I'm logged in on my son's computer, too.) Very cool. That makes me feel better about his friends surfing the sift...I haven't received any complaints or threats yet. ;-)

I monitor what he watches, and if I ever see a sift that I don't want him to watch (if it's scary or brutal) I tell him not to look at it. And he's not allowed to look at the queue...AND he has to ask about the NSFW ones.

However, I'm not strict about foul language or mildly sexual content...I know that he will see it anyway, so being able to have an open dialogue about what he sees and what is and is not socially acceptable seems the better route.

Plus, he knows I have a way of checking where he's been on the internet, so he sticks to that rule. Good thing he hasn't learned how to delete the History. ;-)

There really isn't a way to make it completely kid safe. Everyone has different opinions about what is ok for their kids to watch. For example, I would much rather he see this:

http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=8350

than this:

http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=6773

So, there really isn't a way to please all the parents...it would give them a false sense of security about letting their child(ren) watch media that might upset the parents.

But what you've done is great. Making the NSFW tags viewable to members only is fantastic.

rickegee says...

That sounds great, James.

However, it does run directly against my plan to teach her how to log in so that she can vote for daddy's stagnant lindyhopping and Young Ones videos as well as anything involving Nellie McKay. She will have to overcome the vicious new member queue, but she has a better handle than I do of what is brilliant and vote-hogging.

daphne: "I never noticed that feature!"
james roe: "If we added a feature that hid nsfw videos"
:-) Just wanted to clarify that that feature doesn't currently exist. James was merely suggesting it. But after reading your response, it's obviously something that needs serious thinking about.
