Why is the Sift so money hungry?

With all these (new) ways of getting money from its members I'm wondering why all this money is needed. I mean the Sift doesn't seem very bandwidth intensive seeing as all the material is hosted elsewhere and the page isn't cluttered with images. Maybe lucky is being paid for his programming work, which would be fine.
I'm willing to donate some money but I would like to know why it is needed. Basically I would like to see a balance sheet.

Well sir, funny you should axe. I was having a brief discussion on the same subject, when this was posted-(another user alerted me)-

My take, is the viable duration of this experiment is reaching the point of diminishing expectation, and the grand idea has collided with the realities of responsibility-
Evolution In Action

I suggest, you send them a check, and pretend it's going to some South American country for school supplies.(Beer, pot, sex toys)

Donations are not compulsory. I went charter because It's the most entertaining thing on the net for me. I don't have cable and it's cheaper than netflix. Y'ever tossed a quarter or a dollar to a busker because he or she made the street sound good? It's like that for me. The hard work is evident and it's not festooned with advertising and pop-ups. I've given to public radio too. Same idea. I'm still waiting for my Siftbot tote bag.

Tell ya one place it doesn't go......TO GETTING ME THAT T-SHIRT DAGICUS!!!
(been what, 3 months)
Don't worry folks, there was no actual money sent for the empty promises.....
truth be told, I first told dag to give my shirt to someone else, then changed my mind AFTER he had gone to the post office-or whatever it is you Aussies call the place where the prison supply ships drop off mail every 3 months....

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

^ that's a good starting point. The primary place money goes is to our servers- we have 4 very high end servers on a rack in the East Coast of the US. We also have a subscription with a content delivery network that hosts our images and other bits for us.

Yes, Lucky does get paid a small stipend (nothing like a living wage- and nothing like the time he puts in)

I wouldn't say we are "money hungry" - more like trying to keep things afloat without going into personal debt.

Lucky and I both have full time jobs. Unfortunately, the Sift would not be able to support even one person at a full-time rate - so no, we're not exactly raking it in.

Non logged in users should see more ads.

Also, you should put "featured" video submissions mixed in every page
like LiveLeak or Vimeo, and have them pay you for hosting.

My only real concern is that logged in users are voting on the queue and doing something useful, and its distracting to see paid videos that look like normal submissions.

At any rate, load up the google ads and stuff, and maybe remind folks to do their duty and click through on a few ads every once in awhile.
