What am I doing wrong?

I don't post many videos anymore, because usually when I find something I feel is worthy of the sift I find that it has already been posted. But twice now I've posted a video that didn't get a single vote and expired to my personal queue, then days/weeks later I come to the sift and see someone posted the same video and it's now on the top 15 list after a few hours of being posted, using a nearly identical title and tags as my post.

I think a lot of factors contribute to this. It could be due to the time when you try to sift a video, and it falls by the wayside (off the first unsifted page) and doesn't receive a lot of views.

If a video receives a lot of votes in a rapid timeframe, it is then considered "hot", and the default view for VideoSift is to sort by "hotness" rather than "newness". This can in turn have an unsifted video show on the front page for a long while, which quickly moves it up to be sifted.

I am still trying to figure out when is the best times and best way to describe a video when sifting something. I too have seen videos I have tried to sift get no attention for me, and I get ticked with the low vote count and just discard it, and then someone else sifts the same thing and in a day it already hit the Top 15.

However, if these videos you submitted didn't get any love, but you submitted them first and they're still sitting in your pqueue, and someone else sifts the same thing, then its a duplicate, and a privileged member can invoke the dupeof command and it will transfer the votes to you.

That's why I just sift videos whenever I see something cool, and I don't really care if it only gets a couple votes at first and sits in my pqueue. I just wait a bit and the beg the video in a couple weeks to hopefully get more attention from the crowd.

[That hurt my brains!][You got Asteroids? No but my dad does...]If you submit something from South Park or National Lampoon's Vacation, be sure to use those popular brand names in your title. People are more likely to vote for things that are familiar.

[Creedocide - Harness the Power of Religion] - very funny, but the title doesn't do anything for me. I'm not sure what I would title it, perhaps 'Harness The Power Of Religious Violence' or 'Dogma: Kills Rats Dead'. You want to find something that communicates what is funny about the video, even if it gives away the punchline. Picking the sentence you find funniest in a video works well, although maybe not for this vid. Also, suggesting violence and/or sex is a great way to get people to give your video a chance.

[Nathan Myhrvold: A Life of Fascinations] - Many aren't willing to watch a long video, and the title doesn't do anything to peak my curiosity. I don't know who the guy is and 'life of fascinations' is vague. Can you crystalize what makes watching this video worthwhile in a single title? What is the most impressive or outrageous thing in the video? That might work.

Also, time of day makes a big difference. The more people on the site, the better your chances for getting votes.

As an experiment, I'd suggest killing those vids and resubmitting with different titles.

You are putting your videos in a section where sometimes there are 12 or more pages full of videos waiting for votes. If you care about your post reaching the front page then they have to stand out. If there are 10 people for example, I guarantee you that 8 out of those 10 determine whether they keep reading the description and play the video based on the substance of the headline. That's just human psychology. I personally don't care about that stuff, it makes one too dependent on heuristics and therefore prone to biases and you end up missing quality content. But take a look at members like dystopian, or kronos who have more than 1000 videos sifted and pay attention to the wording of many of their headlines. You don't get that many starpoints without successfully grabbing attention.

And in the case of titles being almost identical, then it has to do mostly with the time of submission, and partly has to do with who is posting it. Users with diamond level and above have been noticed more than the rest of users, so the reputation and status they earned gives them a slight advantage over the others. It is the result of people giving value to the categorization of the star point system. In a queue full of different media, you dont want to waste your time watching something not worth it, so if a well respected or high level sifter posts something you place more confidence in them and assume what they post is quality, compared to a member of minor status. Similar things are assumed if the user is popular. Again, a minor detail but whether you are aware of it or not, we tend to behave that way. I think time of submission plays a bigger role though.

I think the truth is: mostly only the newbs and probies don't go through the unsifted videos and mostly only look at the top fifteen. It is mostly the people who have been around a long time that look though that and then they probably look out for people they know.

Sad but true.

DFT: I actually submitted that South Park vid twice with different titles, neither got any votes. I figured people just didn't find it as funny as I did (Butters cracks me up).

Most of my submissions are at night, as you can see by this post, it's almost midnight my local time (CST). I tend to check the front page and top 15 while drinking my "morning" coffee. I have the front page set to hotness so it shows new posts too. Then later in the afternoon if I have time I check the new posts and new published videos.

I know I've been neglecting my pqueue'd vids. I hardly * beg, or now I can * promote them since I have amassed a small stockpile of power points without realizing it. I feel kind of selfish using them on myself though. I did self promote one of my videos the other day because it was about to expire with 8 votes.

I guess over the next few days I'll try killing and resubmitting some of my pqueue vids.

Personally I seen a clear correlation on my videos based on the time I post them, though I agree titling is important as well as Mauz15 stated.

A video I post at night which is night time EU and early afternoon US has a higher chance to be posted.

However I do most of my sifting at work as part of my morning I fucking hate work routine.

Those videos almost never post even though it's good content mostly because no one else in the EU is up and most US sifters are passing out while injecting/smoking drugs, not surprising given that they elected a communist.

This is counter intuitive I believe given that the site is supposed to weed out the 'best', but the best is wholly reliant on exposure on the front Unsifted page. Now you can claim that it doesn't occur but I would disagree given the regularity that a video of mine is promoted and is swiftly upvoted, clearly showing that lack of exposure not content was keeping its vote count low.

I expect your responses soon in 12 point, double spaced and around about 1500 words.
