VideoSift New Server Fund

We've just put up a ChipIn Applet on the sidebar of all Sift Talk pages. This has been recommended by a few people - so we're happy to give it a try.

We still have a bunch of T-shirts, so we'll be passing those out to Sifters who dig deep.

$1000 will give us a good start on our server configuration. What we want is another dual Xeon box as a second load-balanced server.

In front of that we've got our eye on a lower speced P4 to be the load balancer- round robining to the two massive web servers. I get sweaty just thinking about it.

Thank you for your support Sifters.

Update: If you are giving $30 or more - can you please put your size in the Paypal comment field, and indicate if the Paypal address is OK for shipping?

Well- we think that the people who are more likely to be interested in contributing would be Sift Talk goers. If we find it's not working we may put it out there- but we don't have a lot of room.

I sent a Fiddy. Not much, only 1/20 of watcha need, but I hope that helps.

Also if you're thinking to buy a brand name PC, don't do it. Buy the parts and let someone build it for you. Save a grand or at least $500.

Well we don't actually buy it- this will give us about 3 months for the box on the rack, including bandwidth. We're with a small but hot hosting company called Johncompanies.com

They don't do a lot of handholding- but are great if you semi-know your way around a Linux box.

If you ever wanted to comparison shop, dag, there's a great company here in Culver City called Media Temple that has a pretty sharp shared grid server though you'd probably be happier with your own box (http://mediatemple.net/). I've used them for some time now, and I couldn't be happier. They're a great group of smart guys.

I have heard good things about Media Temple. We shopped around quite a bit a few months ago when we made a move from out old servers- we like that we are with the "small but great" guys.

Can we get a thermometer-style funds gauge somewhere so the community knows what we need to contribute or what our goal is and how close we are to achieving it? It works for Children's Miracle Network every time. If you see that a huge $$ is needed, you give more, if you see that only a tad is needed, you give that tad. WIN
.

Showing 20.5% atm. Come-on folks. With the number of active members we have, 5$ a person would mean done. We only need 16 people to say $5. That's ONE Starbucks coffee each. Just skip one trip to the caffeine engine one time. Go for Tea just one time this month.

In all honesty, I had someone rip into my paypal, insurance and a threatened lawsuit recovered my damages. But is there really no other way to pay? I know VS will not release my information but I really don't care to invest so much information with paypal again.

Edit: Nevermind I found a way to pay via a credit card.

Great idea Brian I sent you some sift juice.

In hindsight putting this on the front page probably would have made you rich, probably lots of anon sifters who appreciate the sift probably would have helped out too.

Thanks Fedquip! Well - I guess I considered this more like an intimate support luncheon among stalwart supporters.

If we need to upgrade again - we might go for the front page Ron Paul style money bomb! ("Remember, remember the Sifts of December?")

That's very true. I was an anon since Beta, and I would've been down with that. You should remember that for your next [ahem] Dual Xeon server.

$739 in less than 24 hours.

We're gonna make it.

Why did I ever doubt you Sifters?

You're an atheist?

I guess I assumed you spent all your money on weed.

Yea, Dag, I smoked that non-habit forming marijuana for years. But I've long since recovered. You gotta have faith, baby!

[did I just type that out loud?]

Yes, George, there are two kinds of words.

Just want to point out that in a little under 24 hours we've raised as much money as we make in 15 days of google ads.

Seeing as how VS gets more and more traffic couldn't you start looking for higher paying advertisers? When VS started ads they were like Winchestertonfieldville Iowa. Now it's more like Cincinnati Ohio. And if the trend keeps It will be like Las Vegas, except without all the prostitution.

Aw no prostitutes? Why not?

I think they stick with google ads for the text purposes, but that's my own theory

Oh and 91%!

Hooray! We reached our goal in 1 day and 18 hours. Gee I guess me setting the range on the fundraiser for 1 month was a little pessimistic.

Thanks again to everyone. I'm overwhelmed and humbled by the response.

The servers are officially ordered and being built as we speak.
