Top 15 rotation frequency

I've been noticing lately that the Top 15 on the front page seem to stay almost the same for days on end.

Naturally once a video hits the top list it starts to collect a lot more votes, but I wonder if the time spent in the Top 15 list should be cut down.

It would be nice to see fresh content there every day.

those options exist on the top video tab already. The top videos default to 24 hours. I think that the top 15 is good for people who don't live on the site. It's a nice way for new users to find awesome stuff. I guess what I'm saying is that super users have different demands, but we want to help everyone become a super user.

James, are you saying that the default Top 15 on the front page is from the past 24 hours? That isn't the impression that I get; many of them seem to live on there for around 4 days.

I wouldn't say that somebody who checks VS daily is a super-user -- I think it would be nice to have fresh content in the Top 15 box every day. There are a lot of sites I check regularly, and the more frequently they are posted to, the more often I visit them.

The vids on the Top Videos tab are the top voted vids for the last 24 hours: totally different list than the Top 15 on the sidebar in the front page which has vids which have received the most votes in the last 4 days.

That's what I thought -- so how about if the front page Top 15 came from the last 24 hours like the Top Videos tab default?

Not only would this give fresher content to the home page, it would give more sifters the chance to appear in the Top 15 list (albeit for a shorter time).

I think that would punish outstanding videos that deserve longer runs and occasional, but regular, visitors would miss lots of good stuff. I still would like to see the pull-down right at the top of the Top 15 list, even though that is provided if you click through on the Top Videos tab.

it's called videosift, not videogivemewhatiwantwithnoworkrequired.

the whole thing would suck if everyone just watched the top 15/25/50.

problem is, the same sorts of things get into the top 15 (2 lewis black clips from the same routine that has already been posted 10 times?)

but that's the top 15.

when i am bored of it, i go do some sifting, hence the site is more healthy.

same thing with moaning about some videos not getting out of the queue... well.. they were sifted! tough lollipops!

also remember if you change the rules too much it kinda makes previous vote counts redundant. if the "new top 15" was faster, then new videos would get less votes, and the "top 100 of all time" would only have old vids in it.

Stop breaking things. Make it easier to sift, not easier to sit back and click shit that other people sifted.

James' point was that if the top 15 sidebar was only for a day at a time, the less hardcore visitors would miss out on a lot of great videos because they'd come and go between visits. (Actually while I've been working day and night on v3 for the past five months, this is exactly what I've been experiencing myself. Every couple of days when I return to watch videos and see a bunch of great stuff [like this!] I'm very thankful for the 4-day rule.)

There is a sexy customization for the top 15 sidebar in v3.0, but not date range, which I think should be the same for everyone as it gives these top earners equal value. If you want to modify the range, use the Top Videos tab! That's what it's there for.
