The Most Unpopular Decision Ever

Some of you have no doubt noticed the queue swelling in size with the recent hike to 10 votes per video. In fact it has been sitting at between 220 and 230 for a couple of days, and we feel like that is just too many submissions to ask people to sift through. So what did we decide to do about it?

THE MOST UNPOPULAR DECISION EVER

We are going to reduce queued video submissions from 4 - 3 for non charter members, and from 8 - 6 for charter members... I know it's horrible and unfair, but the upside to this is that the gem you posted last week that got passed over now has a new lease on life... well OK only if you post it again, but the idea is that a smaller queue makes it easier for us to do what we have been doing, which is sifting up quality video gold.

As always feel free to rant, rave, and damn my soul inside.

I welcome the change James.

Personally: I've always thought that the upgraded use of 8 slots edges on the obscene (an opinion held by another upgrade...who's since thrown it out the window and continued down the road of hypocrisy - no prizes for guessing who I mean!)

As much as I love the ever-changing content of the Sift...the time of a page (or three!) to many has arrived, in my opinion.

benjee says...

Just wondering...could saves be treated as a separate post from the restrictions? Would make other Sifter's - who always leave at least a slot free for any such special occasions, breathe a sigh of relief!

LadyBug says...

not i, blankman ... you never find me screaming 'more! more!' (well at least not here)

i think it's a great decision for the same reason i think keeping the expiry queue to 4 days is a good reason. we are here to sift the best ... it's not a personal contest here for rank.

The queue may be smaller right now, but I’m glad to see some new screen names participating – non-self-linking ones I mean. I hope the newer ones will jump in even more. And we’ll see what kind of diversity we’ve attracted . . .

*crossing fingers*

My fraternity, ATO, preaches “strength through diversity” – we’ll see if it’s true. . .

And to think I paid $10 (TEN) dollars (US) for the privilege of customized user profile, with tony colors (not overbearing . . . well, except for Lucky), html rights, absolutely no ads, personalized name and comment styling, personal subdomain, my very own Flickr pic (cool tornado and lightning in an attempt to pose (even though I like Mr. Rogers videos) that I might be kind of fiery or dangerous in a Beethovenic sort of way, as well as "higher number of queued vids (8)." EIGHT!

Now we, the proletariat, have been downgraded to 6 (SIX!).

Hunger strike!!!!

I can't help but wonder if the increase in required votes is based upon total members, or if it takes into account "active" members? i.e. how many accounts are dormant, and don't submit or vote? if the overall number of active members isn't increasing much, it seems silly to raise the ammount of votes required if the number of voters isn't increasing much.

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Sometimes - you are right, that we are a Long Tail community with a core of dedicated members.

We are definitely gaining new active submitting members and queue sifters, this is evident in how often the front page is being refreshed.

50 videos to the front page a day was a bit too much. Daily visitors miss some good stuff, that could be buried on page 4, and that's why we upped the queue escape to 10.

To use a silly cliche, the queue is the engine to run the front page - and at 9 votes the front page was a bit over-revved.

The result of raising the escape value to 10 was that the front page refreshes less frequently, but the queue bulges. That's why we modified the submit limit to 3. It's a balancing act that we will constantly be changing - because we are still growing very quickly.

Farhad2000 says...

I think the experiment is going well my queue page is filled with submissions from non regular contributors. It's nice to see what others have to offer for once.

I know I whore my videos but I do think they are pretty cool.

James Roe says...

Also, if you look at the members that have joined at the last month, they are much more likely to be active than members signing up 3 months ago. Lots of the new members seem to be lurkers who have just decided to get their feet wet.

dotdude says...

The change may increase the commenting. Imagine some of us loose on the Sift with our idle fingers having caught up on all the videos. MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Does that mean commenting will have a limit too?

Farhad2000 says...

No one will surpass me on commenting. Because clearly I have too much time. Or rather it's becoming a worrying addiction. My cat recently left me after I forgot to feed him. Clearly we should all join up and sue Dag collectively for damages before he goes out and splashes out on a new boat.

rickegee says...

It looks like you are going to have to try harder to be unpopular, James.

A real unpopular decision would be to broadcast the video feed from Brian's flagellation chamber. Although that would have the beneficial effect of hastening a rule amendment to prohibit both snuff, pretend snuff, and hairshirt videos.

grspec says...

I am a new member who (at least in my mind) is trying to contribute and I don't mind the decision. I was a little surprised to see the queue get smaller but the decision causes me to try and submit a better quality video. I would imagine you will get less of the "let's throw this out there and see what sticks" mentality.

LadyBug says...

yeah, i agree, grspec ... sorry to admit, but the queue has been filled with absolute shite lately! yeech!

we're suppose to be responsible for sifting the best of the internet, not merely tossing votes out there.

joedirt says...

Well, it's really hard to track new users because for some reason, the user ranking doesn't list posted videos or anything other than "0" until you hit bronze or 10 pts. Not sure why that is, but it's always had that bug.

leeweek says...

my potential, my wondrous vids, scoured form the Great Void, now stifled and held back like any other n00b's lame offering to this land. may the internet demons tear your soul apart, foul scum.
na, jkjkjkjkjkjkjk.
i agree, the sift has grown from a small village to a wondrous stronghold, with hours of limitless entertainment in her vaults.
i remember when i was a young lurker, back when the sift was only 20 pages long. now it is full of offerings from the travelers of the Great Void, control is a necessity!
LONG LIVE THE SIFT!!!

reed says...

Hi, I've been a visitor to videosift for a while, I just made my first submission, and in doing so, discovered the Queue! I never even noticed it (or did at first and forgot about it). Would it make sense to get more people voting on items in the queue?

James Roe says...

Hey reed, it would be nice if we could funnel more people into the queue. Currently we haven't been able to come up with a good way to do it. We had originally hoped just having it on the top bar would be enough, but experiences like yours clearly show that is not true.
