Is "NSFW" politically correctness gone too far?

hello all.

What is the criteria for NSFW?

I would guess: "presume that everybody works in a church surrounded by moral crusaders that could eavesdrop or look over your shoulder at any given time".

I mean, is anything that could slightly offend a mere single person in the whole world necessarily NSFW? hasnĀ“t it been used with way too much caution in mind?

I know that I can simply not use the NSFW filter, but the whole thing sounds "too moral" for me. My humble shameless-faun two cents here.

Since there are no universal rules for safe/not safe throughout the different societies the approach seems to be to go by the weakest link in the chain.

A lot of the nsfw clips with strong language would be fine in european workplaces due to the language barrier. Same goes for a bit more tolerance towards nudity in Europe as opposed to the U.S. for example.

In the end it is still a choice and up to you what you want to watch or not. It is not like the nsfw clips are geoblocked out depending on your culture.
Chances are if the society you live in is highly restrictive you wont get a peek at videosift at all.

And it depends on where you work I guess. Me I watch just about everything, with very few exceptions. If I worked as the personal assistant to the pope it would be a different story of course.

funny, I was thinking the same thing not too long ago. I've always thought that workplaces where watching silly videos on the internet is fine aren't going to be too fussy if there's a bit of swearing or nudity in it. That said, I don't actually work (bloody students!) so why listen to me.

maatc, I understand that relativity. As dispersed around the globe as sifters are, the common denominator is that they are all here at VS.

It is just that I seen NSFW tags for the silliest things... I would save it for really, really, I mean, really strong scenes or language. But then, I live in Brazil, which is not "lawsuit country".

Lunkwill: agreed, I thought on those same lines

Brazil, isn´t that the country where a g-string is considered ok for casual friday at the office?

I also feel that more gets marked "NSFW" than necessary for my taste, but then again I don´t work in a cubicle in Kansas City...

All in all I think the community is pretty good at figuring out which clips need the label and which don´t.

At some places, internet use during breaks (e.g. lunch) is more relaxed (so watching a vid is ok) but to have a boss+client come in just at the wrong moment could be bad if the content is not ok.

Besides, NSFW can be an indication of something interesting, depending on context of title/thumbnail/tags/channels

NeuralNoise says...

precisely my point, usually NSFW is an indication that content is at least edgy or somehow interesting. Branding tame videos with the awesome NSFW tag is a misdirection. Like they are cheating me into watching safe content, that is so unfair!

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Considering that it's just a benign warning (unless filters are engaged) I don't see that it does any harm catering to the lowest NSFW denominator. On the plus side, it's vital for menonite sifters, viewing videos while churning butter.

bamdrew says...

yeah, NSFW means 'maybe cursing, maybe nudity, maybe something gross,... at least 2% of people would, in public, express a problem with it'

think of all the grandma's on the sift! we don't want them stumbling on something like one of ant's filthy posts,... grandson sitting next to them,... all trying to turn the laptop off by unplugging it,... all-like, "oohmy, this internet thing is just wretched! why won't it go away!?"

kronosposeidon says...

I just use NSFW as a courtesy to my fellow sifters, because I'd hate to think of any of you getting canned from your job because your uptight boss walked into your cubicle right when Tom Hanks is saying, "Go fuck yourselves!" People have been fired for less, unfortunately.
