Channel Icons - New Concepts

Hey Gang, i've just finished some early mockups of some new channel icons, and i need a bit of help with the animation concept. All the icons have been made to dags rough specifications, but the animation one is clearly not obvious enough. So what we are looking for are some suggestions for what to do with that icon, as well as any comments/criticisms with the others.

If it's easier for you to make the design idea rather than describe it there is a PSD of the original icon here that you can edit.

cool designs ren! nice work.

perhaps, some pencils /pens sitting out the top of the animation logo?

or maybe, legs and arms ,very cartoon style, drawn onto the body?

<scratches chin and ponders>

ren says...

hehe a crayon version? that sounds interesting
I'll give the Mondrian tex a few goes but it needs to be instantly recognisable by the masses not just the joe "art connoisseur" dirts

i like the pencils out the top, and the vines/greenery shouldn't be too hard.

thanks peoples

i like leaves on the nature one, a twig with some leaves on either side, and think that the animation one should have arms and legs, think spider bot crossed with sifter.

Krupo says...

Leaves and biohazard, yes!

Animation... well you probably will get sued for putting Mouse Ears on the sifter.. unless they're like, different. Scratch that idea - just 'thinking out loud'.

A "flip book" idea can't really translate well to a sifter either... can it? Hmm... that'd be an AWESOME animation though - make the sifter "flip book" whatever the final image is every X seconds...

I wish there was more recent artwork to use for the “art” channel. It’s too bad that recent artists are not household names like Mondrian or Warhol. Works by Takashi Murakami, Damien Hirst or Matthew Barney would probably just stir things up around here. Mixing two art styles would at least suggest postmodernism, 1980’s to the present.

As for the cartoon channel, maybe show the little hand crank as a blur in motion? Or maybe add eyes and a mouth? Big animé eyes?

The green for “viral” makes me think “soylent green.”

The only thing about Pollock is too often folks will say "my kid can do that" or my "dog can do that." However, I remember reading something from the science community about what Pollock did with his technique.

This made me think of these two books. Each one treats the animals as living artists and discusses their works.

By the way, there is a sea lion artist named Sushi at the Audubon Zoo. Her abstract paintings are sold.

choggie says...

agree with the text chosen....too hard to read at first glance...
green on the coconut, perhaps a frog zappin a fly with its tongue, perched on the edge..

Viral needs the Bio-Haz symbol!

The Warhol reference reminds me of soup, not his pop-art trip...
A sift with paint splotch action, or Dali jugglin' the kitties, standing inside...

Animation, with the WB logo with Videosift across it.....DANGER! How bout a buncha celluloid hanging from the top, with one frame enlarged and colorized, with a cartoon mallet hitting a head with stars....etc.....?

LadyBug says...

what about sticking the mona lisa on the sift can!?!?

and i think for nature .... there should be a small ladybug somewhere on the sift ... they're good luck!

ant says...

I have problems with the fonts. They're hard to read.

As for that nature can, I like it. Can we add ants, fireflies, and ladybugs on it too? [grin]

joedirt says...

I like snaremop's animated sifty, maybe his left arm (our right) can be on his hip (like I'm a Little Teapot) to be the old handle. And the blue crank looks like... well... sifty's crank...

joedirt says...

I hate the world we live in where intelligent people are now afraid of DMCA and copyright. First of all it can only be trademark violation, (did you copy a song, words, video, music, photo, etc)

Secondly, clearly this is derivative work (an image wrapped 3-d around a photoshop graphic). Thirdly, it is based on Warhol work. Fourthly, are you selling soup? Then how can this infringe on any campbells rights? Fifthly, it is representing art and referring to art.

At any rate, I do think a split can with two images is better to convey the concept, cause it looks too much like a can. Or at least a picture frame around it or in background helps convey "art" much better.

michie says...

like it snaremop. as you said the legs and arms can be made smaller. how about some eyeballs? also, have you tried keeping the arms and legs metalic colour with boots and gloves ( say black for the boots and the same blue colour as the handle for the glove colour).

like the idea of mona lisas head popping out the top of the art logo.
