Can we make Long Term Probationary Members Shut up?

... lemme explain. They don't submit videos, they don't really vote. They troll. They spew annoying comments. I want them to drown.

Thoughts?

My idea is they only get to post one comment per day, or none at all until they at least get out of probationary status. Maybe limit comments for members until they get a bronze star.

I only say this so it makes it worthwhile to be a member of the community, as opposed to just spouting off ignorant shit... yes I am looking at YOU troll person!

Having them not get their star makes it easier to ban them. Really why all the censorship suggestions? I prefer ignoring the annoying ones. You don't have to be a P to troll; why pick on probies? But Looris' sugestion about the avatar is okay with me: If P Then Not avatar. Makes for some incentive to fully particpate, but doesn't require it.

its not really censorship, more just a way of encourging people to participate in the community, rather than spout off against people who contribute to make the site what it is today.

I wouldnt think it wise to do anything that could possibly discourage people from using the site. Unless this is a larger problem then I am aware of, dealing with it on an individual bases seems easy enough.

But to some people, good commentary is a contribution. While most probies don't seem to offer it, there's a few that have made great comments. And it's like twiddles said - we can't ban them if they have a star - and we get a fair amount of comment spam from probies.

I think we should stay away from doing this sort of thing. Some people, after all, are just here to comment, and a good many of them are good at it and offer welcome contributions, probably more of them than there are trolls... I don't think they should be restrained from having avatars, that's pretty unfair in my mind, and I like being able to recognize frequenters of the site by their chosen avatars.

K0MMIE says...

Mink, don't fucking call me a nazi. We're not buddies and you don't know me well enough to make any comments regarding that.

This post was created just to bring about discussion. This isn't about ruining free speech its about encouraging users to contribute to the group, and rewarding them as such. If you don't have anything to add to this that is constructive or useful, then stooooooooofoooooooooo.

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

No, we won't be banning, crippling or maiming the Sneeches with the P.

I agree that some members contribute quite a bit through comments but just aren't posters.

If you have an issue with a particular Sifter- where you think they've stepped over the line - please let us know, as always.

K0MMIE says...

OH!.... what am I a mind reader!? Good point.

Meh it may not happen, but it was a suggestion, I don't think some of the responses were neccessary, all those kind of comments really do is keep people from expressing their opinions which is just as bad. Ooooh, thats right... snap.

Fjnbk says...

I don't think we should do anything to probationary members. Maybe if you are really annoyed, we could put in a button to hide comments from people that particularly infuriate you.

Though I certainly appreciate those who trawl the depths of youtube looking for the great videos that end up here...I have neither the desire nor the time to do the same. Does that mean that I shouldn't be able to support the videos that I found useful, amusing or beautiful, and that I have nothing of value to say? I certainly don't think so.

It will be a sad day when I can't thank or encourage people who have the dedication to do what I can't.

Ahhh...must we not forget the power of a communal shun. In small hunter gatherer societies, shunning is the greatest form of discipline. Might I suggest that, if a user who has not submitted much, yet always has some sort of dissenting view that makes him or her look like a douchebag *ahem* billOreilly *ahem* those who have moved through the ranks, and those who haven't so much *ahem* me *ahem* can definitely use the power of peer domination to control those "against the grain" naysayers.

For the Record: I tend to like BillOreilly's blunt, extreme stances. I rarely agree with them, but they often make me chuckle.

lol K0MMIE, see my ad hom thread and joedirt's comment for the context of my comment.
