Yeah, I know it would be a pain. But here is what I am thinking. If they can't spam the sift talk and they can't spam the comments. Where is the next place they would choose to spam?

This is an extreme measure for a not so serious problem. It makes no sense to restrict every single new member just because of a few cases of spam. Seriously, where is all this spam you talk about? There are not even spambots in this site. At the most, I have seen a couple of self linkers a few times a month and 2/3 wannabe trolls that are already taken care of.

What if a new member needs to clarify, ask something they dont understand about the site or how it works etc? Not everything is coeverd in the FAQ and not every new member knows who are the admins of this place. So what is this new member to do if they cant post a siftalk about their problem or even message someone else?

I'm glad you're not noticing the spam, our discards and bannings must be working. It's just annoying to be scrolling through my RSS reader and find 3 seperate sift talk spam posts daily.

Just go back to the old system of not letting probies vote or comment until they've got a video through.

If we see spam we "flag it."

4 instances from only 2 accounts in a single week. Where is this constant every day spam problem? Again, no one is saying spam here does not exists but I don't think the amount is necessarily enough to take such extreme measures for every new member. Nothing is being based on hunches, it is based on the fact I visit the site's recent comment section and the siftalk section often. I am sure if the spam was so constant and out of control then the admins would have done something about it already.

Secondly, understand my skepticism on this when:

1. according to you, the constant bans and discards are working to the point where many of us don't notice it.

2. You lay out an argument for restricting new accounts in a very strict and limited manner as a countermeasure to deal with the spam. By that logic, anyone can assume the spam problem is very serious and therefore out of control (is not out of control if you need to use RSS to see it) since one of the solutions is to make it more difficult for new members be it spammer or not, to be able to interact in this place.

3. Your siftalk needs more info. How was I, or any other reader supposed to know about using RSS to see what you are talking about? or are you assuming everyone here knows exactly about this problem based on the 7 lines of text you provided?

Is hitting the instaban button too much work for you? No need to punish the proletariat for the actions of a few spamming kapitalist pigs.
