USS Constitution Enters Dry Dock Time Lapse May 18 2015

Some of the guys at my work were talking about this very ship at lunch earlier this week. One had gone on vacation recently to Boston and somehow it came up that this is the oldest ship still in active service.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Paid Family Leave

bobknight33 says...

Using @MilkmanDan experience as the example.

Why should an employer give you $1500 to 5 grand to take off 45 days?
If I were in an accident or such should I get such a paid vacation?

Americans are already paying for paid maternity time off but its not for average Americans.

President Obama signed a presidential memorandum ordering agencies to give federal workers six weeks of paid leave to care for a new child or take care of ill family members.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Paid Family Leave

Oh god, someone in the US please tell me that Hooters ad is real... 'cos that is just amazing. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

On topic, when I was 22, I was a young software developer and offered a job in the US. They pay was great and then they told me I'd get 2 WHOLE WEEKS vacation. At which point I hung up. I now have 5 in NZ (on top of public holidays).

The way employees are treated in the US is little short of medieval.
We get 14 weeks paid parental leave in NZ and most people think that's nowhere near enough.

Red Band Trailer - "Vacation"

Mordhaus says...

Here is the thing, for it's time, the original Vacation was incredibly crude. Same for European Vacation and so on.

I mean think about it, in the original they were tagged by people in the ghetto, clark was continually trying to flirt and almost cheat on his wife, animal cruelty by tying the dog to the car and driving off, turning the aunt's body to the car and then dropping her off like a UPS package, and it culminated with a terrorist attack by clark on the security guard of wally world.

I hate to break it to you, but if you grew up during that time period, the movie was damn crude and damn funny. This, if it is done correctly is going to be hilarious as well. I figuratively laughed my ass off when I saw the Ferrari driver get creamed.

Dover Police Kick Man In Head While He Is Complying

newtboy says...

I'm confused....are you saying you feel if they THINK you have a gun, they can punt you in the face and break your jaw even if you are complying with their orders? Because he WAS complying with their orders and getting on the ground when he was kicked in the face, and cops can always say they THINK you had a gun, then act violently with impunity.
The radio repeatedly said the man with the gun has a yellow shirt and a hat, this guy has a white shirt and yellow hat, so he doesn't fit the multiple clear descriptions. Why would they think 'the dude had a gun'?
I also note, that was the SECOND time that officer kicked him, the first time was as he tells him for the first time to 'get on the ground' while kicking the suspects legs while the suspect is complying with the original 'get your hands up' command.

Also, they lied about the suspect and falsely charged him with multiple crimes, as noted here....
"The incident occurred at a gas station on U.S. 13. Lateef Dickerson, 30, of Dover, was originally charged with assault, theft and resisting arrest, but those charges later were dropped." Surprise, he apparently also did not have a gun at all!

On top of that, this is the official police statement where they are saying the officer did nothing wrong...
"As the man was in the process of getting on the ground he was kicked in the head once by Webster rendering him unconscious." I can't fathom how they think that's OK, they admit he was complying but kicked him in the face anyway, but that is their position.

They also said "that his actions regarding this incident were outside of Dover Police Department policy and acted accordingly," which seems to mean we know he didn't follow guidelines, and that's just fine (I don't know what else 'acted accordingly' could mean in this case). If they mean to say the department 'acted accordingly', it should be noted that their only reported actions were to give him a paid vacation and a pat on the back.

That is pretty messed up....but you gotta consider the context. They thought the dude had a gun.

You are a woman in handcuffs? Let me punch and kick you!

newtboy says...

I don't see what you see, but the video is terrible. I see what looks to me like a balled fist right before, and right after contact. I guess we should agree to disagree about that.
Either way, he definitely put his full power into the face hit, stepping back and winding up, and putting his body weight behind it. I think she would likely have gone down had the other officer not held her up and pulled her away. The same goes for his kick, there was certainly power behind it, unlike hers.
I do agree, this was not a brutal beating, fist or slap, but it was completely inappropriate.
I still say it looks like she missed with her kick, but it's not important, her kick had no power behind it. His punch/slap had plenty of power, as did his kick to her ribs (which looking again did seem to connect).
She is a 'helpless' woman who stupidly attacked the cop while she was 'controlled', and she got hit and kicked hard. I'm not sure why you think it's marketed as her being 'savagely assaulted' (although to some people this could fit that description), maybe it's just because that's becoming the norm and is what we expect when an officer loses his cool and hits and kicks someone in handcuffs.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the falsifying a police report by not mentioning this that's the big issue. The inappropriate contact is probably a misdemeanor, but not reporting it should be a felony. Also, getting a months paid vacation for doing things inappropriately seems terrible.

At the arc of his wind-up right before he swings down that his fingers are extended up and out. Definitely a slap.

Still, my only point was is the marketing of this video as if a helpless woman is being savagely assaulted.

She kicked him and he slapped her.

Again, not a justified action by the cop, but also not a gang of violent, blood-thirsty cops pounding the shit out of a poor little innocent woman (which is more what I was expecting coming in here).

A title more to my liking would be along the lines of "Cop Overreacts to Minor Assault from Handcuffed Suspect." or "Hey, Stupid. Don't Kick Cops."

You are a woman in handcuffs? Let me punch and kick you!

newtboy says...

To be fair, I looked closely. That totally looked like a closed fist to me, and a full force punch to the face, not a slap....followed by a forceful kick that missed.
Also, yes she kicked AT him, but did not appear to connect. I get she's idiotic to provoke the easily provoked thugs in blue. She obviously hasn't been paying attention to how they (over)react lately, and really she got off easy compared to many.

A month of paid vacation does not seem to be a reasonable 'punishment' for not only the battery, but also the falsifying a police report....unless it's at club fed.

lucky760 said:

To be fair, she kicked him and he slapped her (then attempted and failed to return the kick).

That doesn't mean he's justified in his actions, just that this is being billed as something other than what it is: a stupid person physically provoking a beast of a man who's unable to maintain his cool (which describes many cops nowadays).

Corruption is Legal in America

newtboy says...

My solution, since we can't get congress to govern themselves (meaning there will never be a federal law against buying congress) we should use local elections to pass local/state laws making it a felony for your representative to accept any money from anyone outside the area they represent, or to accept over a certain amount from a single donor, including gifts, salaries, free work (even volunteered work), perks, travel, food, vacations, or anything else with any value, punishable by immediate removal from office and mandatory jail time.
In California at least, we have the option to write our own laws and have them voted on directly by the populace (ballot initiatives)...real democracy...I know that's not true everywhere, but where it is it should be taken advantage of and used to fix problems our representatives refuse to fix. It's the only solution I see being possible...and even then only possible for some of us.

Had No Idea 'Car Wrapping' Was A Thing

Bosch self-drive car demo

yellowc says...

Did a few of miss the part where you can select the parts that are automated and manual?

You're asking for situations where you can choose and the video shows that almost as the first feature. It's there people

Personally for me, it makes sense to have it be 100% automated by default, place your hands on those bits for 3seconds to enter manual. Release both hands, reverts back to automatic.

The 3 seconds is more of a human thing, I'm sure the the car never actually stops any of its automatic calculations, it simply turns on/off if you can control steering and acceleration.

Presto, enjoy driving however you want and not driving whenever you want.

I'm still a firm of advocate of 100% forced automation, sorry, humans are just far too incapable to be driving death machines. I'm sorry if you enjoy it, we'll just create little "driving vacation spots" and we can all move on? After all, you're probably not getting nostalgic about your commutes to work.

But it'll take a while yet for the automation to be able to handle 100% of driving. In the mean time, this sort of dual mode looks pretty great to me.

How Digital Light Processing (DLP) Works

skinnydaddy1 says...

Worked in the TI wafer-fab in the late 90's when They first started producing the DLP chips. OH god where they hard to produce. The failure rate was through the roof. We had companies begging for more of the chips and we just could not produce them fast enough. On a standard 6 or 8 in. wafer (the largest we produced at the time) you may of gotten one good chip. The upper management was on our case constantly and we kept telling them we are doing the best we could with the equipment we had. Everything went downhill from there. They killed our vacation and sick days, Changed the way people could get fired. Moral tanked and we just stopped giving a shit. One bout of flu and then an accidental food poisoning and poof I was gone. Seven years wasted. Have not looked back since.

Man, I take a week away for a vacation and come back to a brand new sift (well, at least the first page I go to).

This is going to take a bit of getting used to, before I can tell what I like or don't like. But first glance looks very clean and sleek.
