The Oregon Standoff, Explained In 3 Minutes

newtboy jokingly says...

The Hammonds have distanced themselves and said publicly that they have NOTHING to do with these terrorists.

If the terrorists want the Fed to return the land to it's rightful owners, that would be the Paiute Indians (and other native Americans in other places) not the local ranchers. The ranchers got the land from the fed, so if the fed has no right to land ownership, it certainly can't have a right to give away what it never owned.
If it's not their intent to return the land to those it was actually stolen from, that makes this standoff not about a political movement, but an attempt at armed land theft no matter how you look at it.

Who Owns Oregon? Some Historical Context

newtboy says...

So, if anyone reading this knows a Paiute, it is your civic duty to convince them to go on their local news and have them, without any coordination with the 'militias', thank the 'militias' for joining the fight to return all this Federally held native American's land to it's rightful owners, in this case the Paiute, but in all cases the natives.
That should end the standoff.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Official Trailer 2

dannym3141 says...

Obvious parallels with the Avengers here, which is odd because the first half of the trailer looked like a gritty, tense standoff between two legends of comic books only to be followed by an action-has-no-consequences, special effects driven, quip marathon with extra characters shoe-horned in (presumably for sex appeal, or am i being too pessimistic?)

There was little chance in the superhero genre (that's enjoying such popularity right now) to build up a strong female superhero that has her own story and relevance. To me, Johanssen's character is nowhere near as deep or involved as the other Avengers are, to the point i can't even remember the character's name but i definitely can remember what she wears. Given that opportunity with Wonder Woman, why is she being introduced as an aside to Batman and Superman? That undermines her right from the start in my view - the male characters all seem to have had their own individual films as introduction.

What i mean is, just as it is for boys, you'd want a young girl to imagine themselves as Wonder Woman and be the centre of focus, in command, important and everyone wants your input or help. In this case, it seems the best you can do is help out her male colleagues with their critically important work, where they both go "oh i thought she was with you."

Russia's air strikes in Syria explained

vil says...

What? How could anyone seriously propose Obama stop NATO help for Ukraine linked to removing Assad from Syria? What good would that do to anyone but Putin?

Obama does not decide what NATO does and where.

Ukraine will fall to Putin without west European help.

Syria is a tribal and religious mess where no one has anything to gain right now, Assad is hated but legitimate. Rebels are split into factions with unclear objectives. Who exactly would the USA support in Syria if Assad was somehow "removed" by the Russians?

No one wants to fight the IS; Syria wants to fight rebels, Turkey wants to fight Kurds, Iran wants to fight Iraq, everyone wants to fight Israel. OK Kurds want to fight the IS but Kurds dont get much love on this planet. Even Kurds and Assad and Russian air support are unlikely to be enough to fight the IS.

Russia "good cop" in Ukraine... excuse me? You lost me there...

PS: Obama may just have to rethink his position on Assad, everything else is just a standoff hoping to force Putin to respect international treaties that he has agreed to. Which is unlikely. The only possible way out is for Putin to succumb to internal Russian problems over time.

Today on C.G.W.-Cop Goes Into GTA Mode And Runs Down Suspect

bobknight33 says...

I wonder that this event will get the victim from the suicidal state of mind to a desire to live again. As bad as this looks it might be a good thing.

As for the speeding cop. Should he have gone 2MPH - 10 MPH 20 40?

Should they have created a standoff at which point they would have shot at him at first sign of danger? Then have suicide by cop.

The kid is alive. Messed up but alive.

From the cops perspective the actions seems within reason, all be it a (visually ) odd way of achieving a safe resolution.

Police perform illegal house-to-house raids in Boston

newtboy says...

If the key part of the argument is the "imminent escape" clause, does it not logically follow the suspect must be actually IN the home they search?
Perhaps the ACLU spokesman you speak of knows something I don't, but the description claimed this was not an isolated incident and we know the suspect wasn't in there.
If it was neighboring the standoff, which now seems to be the case, it would really seem to be more about the imminent danger to life from erant bullets or explosions. I could understand that, but that's not what the description claims.

Jaer said:

You're taking context way out of proportion, Again, given the circumstances, the searches were valid and needed to find the suspect.

RE: Exigent Circumstances:
"In the criminal procedure context, exigent circumstance means:

An emergency situation requiring swift action to prevent imminent danger to life or serious damage to property, or to forestall the imminent escape of a suspect, or destruction of evidence. /snip"

The key part of this statement is "imminent escape", thus the searches fall under exigent circumstances. ACLU among a few others have already dove into this entire video and it's meaning, they also talked to several attorneys and legal experts and they all say that the searches aren't illegal. Maybe heavy handed, but not illegal.

And lastly (sorry for the long posts), many have already pointed out that this particular video (the only one actually) shows the defensive positioning of the law enforcement, the fact that there's a heli above. This could be a house of interest, possibly someone spotted someone running through the yard, or something seemed suspect. We may never know, but a few officers I've talked to (both in Swat as well as a few of my ex-military contacts) have stated that this isn't standard procedure positioning. That they only arrange themselves like this if they feel there's a threat in the building or car.

This would have unfolded completely differently in Texas. I would guess after the 4th or 5th pitched gun battle/standoff they would have re-thought their need for warrant-less searches.

I don't rly think Obama is as bad as Yogi thinks...

Cause you don't know anything.

Ur cute. :3
You might have an easier time making your argument if you didn't take/make everything quite so personal. Just a thought.

Yeah don't take the deaths of people you don't know so personally, it only matters when they're killing white people.

I respect your analysis and position Yogi but the fact is someone is going to be running the battle station. You have a binary choice here, do you think Romney will be BETTER at standing up to the Complex? Obamas probe droids are (from his POV at least) preferable to myopic & masochistic puritan invasions and total genocide.. imagine a standoff betwen nuclear fleets in the South China Sea.. who would you rather have calling the shots?

Guy gets shot by cops during a riot at LA Art-Walk 7/12/2012

holymackerel013 says...

Beanbag rounds are a "less than lethal" option for law enforcement. Most policemen don't like shooting and killing people. There are cases like when a person gets extremely drunk or high and begins running around with a knife. At some point they might lunge at a person or the police, forcing the lawman to shoot. Cases like that are why beanbag rounds were invented. They are NOT meant for crowd control! I am a psych tech and worked with a patient who had been shot by one. He was involved in a standoff with police. He was holding a knife and threatening to kill himself. after negotiations failed, they shot him with the beanbag and he instantly dropped the knife and complied. The round shattered his kneecap & the tissue around his knee was black and purple. Those rounds are no joke!
