FreddieW: Mexican Standoff (ft. Key & Peele)

Payback says...

As a gamer who go into special effects, I don't think he's trying for an Oscar. He's in it for the Benjamins.

As good as this is, Freddie will always be a horrible actor.

Captain America 2 trailer

JiggaJonson says...

I don't have a problem with special effects. I have a problem with shitty special effects that make me feel like I'm playing a video game instead of watching a movie. Anyone with a fair amount of gaming experience can tell what's real from what's not. All I'm saying is I long for the days when cgi was used to enhance rather than replace good special effects.

The models of the white house blown up for Independence day will ALWAYS look more real than the pixilated aircraft carrier that's coming out sometime next year. Go peddle your fan boy bullshit to someone who enjoys the Green screen studio as much as you seem to.

P. S.

I'm sooo happy that Disney purchased the rights to marvel. I always wanted to see the superheros I grew up reading in high Def PG 13 where wolverine can rip someone in half and not get blood on himself.

Captain America 2 trailer

packo says...

Yeah, who wants to have special effects in a superhero movie... right!?!
on that note, the winter soldier storyline was one of the best (if not the best) Captain America storylines in 20+ yrs... with the recent infringement on personal freedoms/liberties in the states, this movie has a good opportunity to have some social commentary... is it going to be Citizen Kane? probably not, but a smart, entertaining, thrill ride? quite possibly. I'm looking forward to it

Citizen Kane, obvious special effects too... didn't see it (but really I did)

Super Clever Sunglass Illusion

jmd says...

They weren't using an "special" effects, they simply told the camera to only focus on what is in the center of the lens. So when the camera looked at the top of the "object" it would focus to the very back of the piece of paper and everything else would be out of focus. Move to the bottom of the piece of paper and the top goes out of focus.

I actually guessed the entire desk was a picture at the end, but for a much different reason. When it zoomed on the sunglasses I at first thought nothing of the scene was 2d because the shine on the glasses would be hard to do on a matte, and mainly because all shadows were correct. Then I thought "wait.. what if everything was a picture?" and she pulled the desktop off. So it was more a deductive reasoning and not because I saw anything.

Siskel and Ebert defend Star Wars

Stormsinger says...

I can't say I agree with Simon, but I certainly don't agrfee with Ebert, Siskel, or (sorry) bluecliff. Star Wars was pretty crappy when it first came out, in every way but special effects, and none of the subsequent episodes got any better. A trite, cliched story combined with wooden acting and moronic, stilted dialog don't make for a good time, in my opinion.

The shameless flipflopping and revisionist history Lucas presented over the years since then pretty well sealed my distaste. First, it had nothing to do with Campbell's Hero's Journey (my guess is that he had no idea who Campbell was at that time), then later, when Campbell became such a fad, well of -course- it was inspired by the Hero's Journey all along. Even Hollywood types should be able to provide a better fake sincerity than Lucas.

Spectacular Upward Lightning in Rapid City, South Dakota

rich_magnet says...

What's rare is how slowly it moves.

Really, though; this is spectacular! I love how the little sparkies lead the raching plasma streamers. Looks like cheesy special effects, but better.

300: Rise of an Empire

artician says...

If you like way, way over the top special effects and extremely stylized cinematography, it most certainly didn't suck.
Not everyone's cup of tea though. It didn't really need a sequel.

Why not? Did it suck?

Game of Thrones Season 3: Inside the Red Wedding

Yogi says...

I know I'm gonna get ripped apart, but I didn't care about the Red Wedding. After the initial shock of watching a pregnant woman get stabbed in the stomach, I was over it. This guy has one move, build up some stuff and then destroy it and watch the ripples. It's not a clever way of destroying something, it's informed by his love of Medieval Times. Also this probably doesn't bother anyone else but the special effects and the fact that a person just sits there while being stabbed instead of at least doubling over in pain is ridiculous. You get more defense out of people in Rwanda from machete strikes, and blood doesn't come out of a neck like that, just watch hockey skate accidents!

I loved Seasons 1 and 2, Season 3 was dragging on and on with me only really caring about the Adventures of Ygritte and Jon Snow, and Aryas little stuff. Actually the pairing of Jamie and that huge woman was pretty cool for a bit but I also got tired of what a sad sack he was.

I have two problems with Game of Thrones though that I think people will agree with, so read this if you already hate everything I wrote.

ONE: There's not enough of it. I'm not talking about Khaleesi wandering the desert, I'm talking about character development. These are HUGE books with tons of scenes, I gotta think that somewhere along the line a character or two is developed with some small things rather than BIG 3 minute scenes. I want the series to be 20 episodes long, 2 hours and episode. I know people want action and every episode has to matter but aren't the books written in POV format? Why not have some POV parts in the show with some personal narrative!

TWO: The fucking praise it receives. I get there's a lot of book readers and it's a very good series, but it's not the second coming. This isn't even the best thing on TV right now, and it certainly isn't better than The Wire. Game of Thrones has a bunch of Emmys, The Wire has only two Nominations...they didn't even WIN ANYTHING! Could that be because Game of Thrones has like One black guy...who's obsessed with raping a white woman by the way, interesting there.

Oh and The Wire is Real, that shit really fucking happens everyday still. Yet this week people are crying like pussies because their favorite characters get got. Even though I'm a huge fan, I'm kind of embarrassed after this episode to be associated with a lot of the internet. I mean I thought it was cool when Buffy died the second time, it wasn't the end of the fucking world though. Also Buffy came back to life, so good reference to use right? Right?! Ahhh shut up.

Europa Report TRAILER (2013)

ChaosEngine says...

I agree. I thought this was looking great and then they went underwater and.... gee I wonder how this will turn out? Oh look, exactly what I expected.

Now, maybe we're wrong. Maybe this is some epic misdirection and it'll turn out really interesting, but I'm not hopeful.

and @dag, why do you say it "focuses more on the science than the special effects"? I can't say I saw a lot of science there.

It seems to me that these type of scifi flicks often contain an element of horror, too.
I am not a big fan of this.
I understand that any good story must have conflict. But not all conflict has to be "the big bad scary monster". Sometimes it can be internal. Sometimes it can simply be the fear of the unknown.
I want to see a good, solid space movie that encompasses wonder and the element of fear without using it as an excuse to use to dip in to the horror genre.
Maybe I'll just watch 2001: A Space Odyssey again.

Europa Report TRAILER (2013)

"Looks like a great SF movie that focuses more on the science than the special effects. This is the one I'm waiting for."

With Copley, Wu, and Cordero on board, I hope you're right, because that trailer is pretty terrible. Ugly DV image, awful dialogue, there's not much to be worked up about.
