CGP Grey On The Current Brexit Situation
Yeah, he should have said that nobody really knows and that his perspective was rank speculation and he should have used risk-based metaphors such as gambling to describe his views.
To really drive it home, he should probably use rainbows and stars so that nobody would miss it.
Wait...
If the second coming of Jesus happened tomorrow and it turned out it had been David Bowie all along and he was wearing a leprechaun costume I would still not give 45% chance of a unified Ireland.
Great overview, but i think the specifics are a little academic (as in not based on first hand experience).
Trump's Plane & Pilot (In Depth)
I am willing to bet all that gold plating is fake/lies. Not just for the apt metaphor.
If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try, try again...
*quality metaphor for the human condition. All he needed to do was collapse dead at the end.
chris hedges-brilliant speech on what is religion?
It almost sounds like he is suggesting to keep an open mind and learn about other cultures, religions & mythology in order to understand those perspectives; and overall to be humble to the mystery: that we do not know.
In my opinion some of his opinions were a little contradictory - he doesn't believe in any sort of god or gods, but it seems that a wiser statement would be that he doesn't know, which would correspond with the "I don't believe in atheists" theme.
Furthermore, I honestly don't think that those who (in Hedges' words), "do not explore the religious impulse" are inhuman. Even if someone never explores it in their lifetime. In my opinion - the late bloomers who have disconnected themselves from all inclination of organized religion or spirituality, to find it on their own later in life might have a few more advantages than those that did not disconnect themselves from it at some point.
My personal preference is that I do believe in god because I want to believe in god. Whether it's a metaphor, completely abstract energy, a point in spacetime, a massive intelligent energy field that existed long before the big-bang, a life-force found only on Earth or the Milky Way or a fucking super mega alien technological consciousness program experiment or even a microscopic white dude flying on a microscopic magic carpet or all of the above and none of the above. I just believe even though my version of whatever creation/god is, is completely unidentifiable, it's everything and it's nothing.
Consent is actually easy to understand, yeah?
I do think that's a good direct physical meaning for the metaphor. I also think that could be interpreted more broadly with a man building the expectation of having sex. Like you're on a date and things are going well and then you get back to your place and y'know for whatever reason she just isn't in to it that night. You've 'made tea' by having a good time together and then something shifts and she's not into it any more at the moment. That's fine we'll make some tea and have it another night.
Don't be hard on me for being so thick, as I'm not trying to pull a boner, but in this metaphor does "making tea" mean manufacturing an erection and presenting it?
Can't think how it could make sense otherwise.

I'm still trying to figure out what the "making tea" metaphor is supposed to represent. Are people fluffing before gametime or something these days?
Consent is actually easy to understand, yeah?
This metaphor really doesn't work in Ireland.
You might think I'm joking, but I have had cups of tea literally* forced on me by old women.
* yes, literally.
Drummers on Ringo Starr
Insightful. The musicians walking us through his style provided some perspective that I just wouldn't have thought about otherwise. Loved the "sloppy falling down the stairs" metaphor.

If we take for granted the need for cost cutting, it would be only logical, if not an outright neccessity in a democracy, to leave the details up to the local representatives. Payment of X Euros expected by mm/dd/yy, figure it out yourselves.
Why do it any other way?
Well, you know the three most discussed possibilities as well as I do: shock doctrine, an attempt to force Syriza to commit political suicide, and bureaucratic automatisms.
During the first stages of this facade, I would have put my money square on shock doctrine. The measures are just too damn beneficial to the "there is no society" kind of thinking. It's horseshit, economically, and tremendously damaging, socially.
Replacing Syriza with the Old Guard seems quite appealing, given the behind-the-scenes deals with the nepotistic elite as a means to facilitate a smoother transitition once those pesky commies are out of the picture. The vitriol against Varoufakis is just staggering in this regard. News of the World got nothing compared to what our respectable media has hurled at Varoufakis and Tsipras.
My take on the automatisms on the other hand is rooted in how our politicians and our public has been arguing this entire time. Neoliberalism is the gospel, dissent is heresy. Privatisation is good, cutting wages is good, flexible labour market is good, taxation of wealth is bad, deficit is bad, surplus is good. They drank the kool aid, they are in it hook, line and sinker.
And as a result, the diagnosis is always the same, and so is the treatment. And fuck me for using this ass of a metaphor, given how the language used is the most subtle means of manipulation. "Rescue" the Greeks, "drowning" in debt, "tighten your belt". How about: food only on five days a week, grandma gets to croak on diabetes and your baby boy dies of diphtheria.
Yes, I had a fucked up day. The discussion in parliament about the "Greek problem" was a disgrace and high treason of the humanistic ideas that are supposed to be the foundation of the European Union.
The thing I really don't understand is why the creditors are so insistent that it is ONLY the poor who have to lose out. I mean, the welfare system is a large expense but not the only one... surely they could get a few bob for some of their old military aircraft?
BP is Sorry
Hardly a good metaphor for what happened, given the investigations into the incident. Newt sort of fixes the analogy, but I don't think he took it far enough.
It's not like it was an illicit deal with a shady prostitute, but more of a wedding to a supposed good person. We thought everything was above board and that our significant other was true and faithful. While, in reality they were shagging every person they could behind our back.
One day we go to donate blood, only to find out we have HIV. In the aftermath of this discovery, it becomes apparent of our spouse's perfidy and the fact that they have HIV from their careless affairs. We find out they weren't wearing proper protection. Now we have to live with their mess.
Stewart Lee:
"It seems unfair, doesn't it, given that America is the largest consumer of oil per head in the world and they seemed annoyed with the bloke from BP for merely trying to provide them with the oil that they craved. Americans, picking on the bloke from BP. It's ridiculous. It's like a furious customer punching a prostitute in the face because he's sickened by his own desire"
Canadian In A Canoe Vs. Naked Guy
This is elaborate, and very Canadian visual metaphor. The naked man represents the terror of divulging that which is most vulnerable while being intoxicated, while the tackle represents the motor coordination challenges while same. Asking for help to "bring it in" being a rejected cry for help. The canoe represents the territory of self, surrounded by the depth of the dark feelings.
It's a very basic Canadian mode of self-reflection.
Completely Erase Entire Comments from People You're Ignoring (Sift Talk Post)
I'm going to stick with the teeth metaphor and say that maybe the dentist should have performed some extractions when he saw rotting teeth. Or maybe enacted some dental cleaning regimen. Then patients wouldn't have to be given some morphine button to press to ignore the pain they can't manage to ignore.
Metaphor aside, this was a feature I asked for a long time ago too, but looking back on it I realize I was wrong. You can't just ignore problems.
True, but not applicable here. In this context that kind of equates to:
"Never have sex and you'll get pregnant amyway."
To mix metaphors even further, my point is: there *is* no spoon.

True, but not applicable here. In this context that kind of equates to:
"Never have sex and you'll get pregnant anyway."
To mix metaphors even further, my point is: there *is* no spoon.
Ignore sore teeth long enough and there won't be any teeth left.
