Howdy,
Welcome to the sift.
I have a question for you....are you affiliated with the company or video you posted?
http://videosift.com/video/Back-packs-for-travel-video-shoots
It seems an odd video to post if you aren't marketing this item, and that is expressly forbidden on Videosift....as explained in the terms and conditions (link at bottom of any page).... if this is not a self link, you might actually post that in a comment on the video so others don't just assume it is and ban you...that does happen here.

Rule below-
Please do not self link.
While you may see this site as a great way to promote a project you are working on or promoting, it would be bad for our content if everyone just put up videos of them and their friends doing random things. If you are associated with a project you think is truly amazing and must be shared, please contact us. We'll take a look at it and if we also think it's great too, we'll post it for you. If you attempt to post it yourself, your video and account will be deleted. Hey, it's harsh, but it's harsh love.

What exactly consitutes a self link?

If your post is not a Sponsored Video (the only allowed way to promote your own content) and any of the following is true about a particular video you are considering submitting, it is a self link, with NO exceptions for any member:

◾The video is associated with your account on the video host (i.e., you uploaded it to YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).
◾You played any role, no matter how large or small, in any aspect of the production of the video.
◾You are in any way responsible for or involved in marketing, promoting, or any other manner of proliferating the video.
◾You could receive any form of compensation (monetary or otherwise) as a result of the submission or subsequent views.
◾You are somehow represented in the content of the video (whether photographically, artistically, audibly, or metaphorically) without the approval of a site administrator.

If you self link, regardless of your logic or explanation, you are violating the posting guidelines. There are no exceptions for any reason, whatsoever.

Finally, submitting a video that is considered spam falls within our definition of a self-link. If you create an account solely to post a video for whatever reason, but do not actually participate in VideoSift in any other way before or after, you may be considered a spammer/self-promoter and your account is subject to banning.

Exempt from our self-link definition is an embed that is supplied to another member's post when fixing a Dead Pool video or adding a *backup embed (see star powers). Bear in mind that this exemption does not apply to your own posts.

Liana Kerzner - An Honest Look At Women in Games

artician says...

Explain, enoch, for I was raised on the "Dog and Pony Show" metaphor. The same, right?

Regardless, intelligent people know the score, (equality being the goal) and this is just rumination for the rest of us stuck on the elementary belief system.
I do have some sympathy for her when it comes to the situation of an agreeable ally who honestly and evenly criticizes their peers. It's sad that she was attacked by the group she's commenting on just for pointing out valid points, when an alternate female perspective is the best thing for them.

If you're interested in the commentary it's worth a listen, but it's just counterpoint and monologue to an ongoing civil argument that most have already formed an opinion about.

Baffled by Stupidity: Richard Dawkins

shagen454 says...

Just like I said to BoneRemake, what makes you think of religion from what I'm writing? I don't belong to any religion whatsoever.

And your metaphor about alcohol is just crazy, maybe one of these days you guys will take the plunge and I hope you do, you too will be amazed that more people are not talking about it.

DMT does not cause brain damage. How can you even begin spreading disinformation when it's obvious that you know nothing about it?

More and more are and I think that is hopeful, because it is probably the most humbling an experience anyone might have. That is why I would love Dawkins to take it - it would humble his shit forever. Yeah, Christianity is a false religion, who cares or doesn't know that, lol!

newtboy said:

Not necessarily. Perhaps they're downvoting the very idea that a drug experience is the same as a religious one. Perhaps they are downvoting your contention that doing certain drugs and causing yourself a certain amount of permanent brain damage is an act of courage somehow.
I, for one, think they ARE very similar, and that they are both just as meaningless, and both entirely in the mind of the effected, not in the real world in any way.
It's a bit like saying 'to those that don't believe in pink elephants, you simply haven't become addicted to alcohol then suffered from detoxifying hallucinations from a lack of alcohol...as that's the only way to 'see' the 'real' pink elephants, or you can simply believe in them, even though you don't see them, because others have seen them and written about it.

The One Ring Explained. Lord of the Rings Mythology Part 2

gorillaman says...

Invisibility isn't a power of the One Ring so much as a side-effect. It shifts mortal wearers a little into the spirit world, so they fade from view in the physical. Sauron doesn't disappear when he wears the ring because he already exists in both worlds and he can see other wearers for the same reason. It's not widely discussed, but this should also be true of other maiar; Gandalf, Saruman and Durin's Bane; and 'high' elves who've been to Valinor: Galadriel and Glorfindel would all also be unaffected by ringvisibility. It's this walking the threshold between worlds that's also responsible for the extended lifespan of mortal ringbearers and why Frodo can see the ringwraiths and they can see him.

The elemental character of the Three, I think, shouldn't be overstated. All of the rings, the One, the Three, the Seven and the Nine are very much alike. They were all made by or under the tutelage of the same creator to the same basic recipe, with independent elven flourishes rather than fundamental differences in the case of the Three. The One has to resonate (musical metaphors are always appropriate for Tolkien's magic) with the others in order to work on them, and that's Sauron's mistake: he is ultimately trapped and destroyed by his ring just as the dwarves and men were by theirs.

MilkmanDan said:

The one thing that I don't like about the One Ring explanation:

It turns you invisible, unless you are the one person for whom it was actually designed (Sauron).

To me, it seems like the rings of power and especially the one ring should grant a more consistent actual power than that...

Left Shark: The Real MVP of Super Bowl XLIX

bareboards2 says...

From this week's issue of The New Yorker:

Shouts & Murmurs February 16, 2015 Issue
Diary of the Left Shark
By Kelly Stout

A remarkable feat of agility was performed on Sunday night, and it had nothing to do with football. It was the sharks. . . . The dancing sharks at Katy Perry’s Super Bowl halftime show . . . danced in unison. But soon, one of the sharks, specifically Left Shark, said enough of that, and began to do his own thing frenetically on national television.

—Washington Post.

First rehearsal went great. Katy says to just call her “Katy”—very down-to-earth move. Happy to see Eric! Grateful he got me this gig, as not a lot of work out there for us sharks.

Second rehearsal O.K. Eric picking up dance moves faster than me, which is no biggie, since I’m still getting over quad injury. Still, resolving to work harder. Went for a beer afterward with dancing Blue Surfboard, named Jeremy. He’s worked with Miley Cyrus!

Eric texted wanting to know if I could use some “extra practice.” Didn’t think I needed “extra practice,” but Eric = good buddy, so I value his input. Couldn’t meet him, though, had book club.

Eric acting high and mighty in rehearsal—keeps referring to himself as “old veteran.” Feel he should turn it down a notch. Super Bowl halftime show is not a combat situation, and metaphor makes no sense.

Rehearsal rough tonight. Eric called my grasp of choreography “amateurish.” Said he did big favor by recommending me, and now worried Katy won’t hire him again. Said work must be “on a professional level” with “zero tolerance for mistakes.” I told him I was sorry to have disappointed, that my work will be “professional level” from here on out. Went to bathroom and cried into fins, but no one saw except Jeremy, who was very understanding. J says Katy makes a lot of people crazy—just ask Russell Brand! Found joke to be a little sexist—and, besides, Katy not really the problem—but appreciated support.

Katy took me aside after rehearsal. Uh-oh. But no! Said she likes seeing my extra effort! On verge of major breakthrough vis-à-vis choreography!

Happy to have long weekend off from rehearsal to regroup. Guy at brunch overheard me talking about current gig and asked if I am a real shark! Of course I’m a real shark! Tried not to be offended, but people can be so ignorant.

Back at rehearsal. Things steadily better, but sometimes feel Eric = competitive with me, since so few of us sharks in the industry. But shouldn’t that bring us closer? (Rising tide lifts all sharks!)

Big day almost here. Grandma and Mom both called to say everyone back home’s rooting for me. Pressure, but in a good way.

Eric recommended some changes to choreography today. Katy considers Eric “genius,” so took recommendations. Feel my success with old choreography hard won, so am disappointed. This time, Eric didn’t offer any “extra help.”

More dance changes today! Can’t keep up, and Eric can tell. Hate to sound paranoid, but worry that Eric’s trying to sabotage me! Going to have a glass of Shiraz to relax before practicing new moves.

Regret drinking entire bottle of wine last night. Skipped rehearsal, which I realize is not “professional level” behavior, but Eric and his “zero-tolerance policy” can suck it.

Embarrassed by last diary entry. Eric is not sabotaging me. Am letting my insecurities get in way of friendship.

NOPE. ERIC’S DEFINITELY TRYING TO SABOTAGE ME. Super Bowl is tomorrow and he changed dance moves AGAIN. Trying to make a fool of me. Unsure which makes me sadder, potential end of dance career or potential end of friendship.

Super Bowl over. Grandma and Mom called to remind me that my personal best was all they ever asked for. Am laughingstock of Internet. Gained hundreds of Twitter followers, but suspect most are “joke” follows. Katy sweet about it.

Jeremy invited me to have a beer with him and other Surfboard. Frankly, feel that other Surfboard’s kind of a blowhard, so declined.

Got voice mail from Mom this morning asking if I’m considering going back for teaching degree. Said I’m “good with kids” and not end of world that dancing didn’t work out. Ouch.

Jeremy brought over falafel last night and made me forget Super Bowl debacle with impression of Taylor Swift. Didn’t know Jeremy = T.S. fan! Promised I wouldn’t tell Katy. Not that I’ll be working with Katy again anytime soon.

Text from Eric wanting to know how I’m “holding up.” Chose not to say anything, as had nothing nice to say.

Jeremy joining book club! Silver lining of Super Bowl ordeal.

Downloaded application to Columbia Teachers College. Think I could maybe make a difference in lives of youth, plus get mind off Super Bowl. Jeremy, Mom, and Grandma all supportive. Mom asked if Jeremy just a friend or what. Her ideas re male friendship pretty “stone age,” but appreciate her interest.

Feeling O.K. about future. Dance world maybe too toxic for shark like me. Perhaps whole episode not humiliation but wake-up call! Considering move to Austin. ♦

Great talk. Covers a lot of very important key areas.

It is utterly ridiculous that so many people just do not care about this, and to be honest this is what concerns AND scares me about the future of humanity. To understand and to give a flying f*ck about these topics you must be knowledgeable and fairly smart (and also realize that your government AND others are NOT your friend--if you ever give someone power they MUST be held accountable and have a regulatory process--though these people "can" be your friend, but only when they truly are used by the people and not the government, lackeys, elected officials, and other idiots that make cronyism look like a mild and easily dealt with issue compared to this stuff...). This is an education system and social system problem (at least in the U.S.; we simply just DO NOT care about these topics very much even though we will regret it), and it is hard to fix since in many cases the "fix" must go through the same government that has a stranglehold on their populace and wishes it to remain this way...

People simply do not understand why we talk about this (or they "fall asleep" because it's "too boring", etc...), along with this they also don't care about science and other issues that require your brain to actually do work. So all issues that deal with complex areas of technology and/or science are now up for "dibs" by the highest bidders AND also governments. Both are scary, for many reasons...especially when you have a populace that really and truly does not understand that they are being used in so many different areas of their lives (which is true even now, and it will only become far, far worse).

So, I'm always happy to see these talks, but they will not truly succeed in any of their efforts until they make the "masses" aware of the issues and concerned of the issues.

I also appreciated his quote about the economic viability of slavery, used as a metaphor for the the moral use of torture and whether torture should ever be used to get, anything--I fully agree with this sentiment. Both, are always wrong.

Good talk. Though it is sad there are so very little ways to respond to the threats that some of these issues can represent, that they showed and talked about.

You are not allowed to 'self link' on this site. The video came from your own youtube account. That is against Sift rules, and a reason to be banned.
Here is the rule you violated.

Please do not self link.

Pregnant Woman Blasts Antiabortion Protesters Outside Clinic

dannym3141 says...

I've seen that once. Might have been after one of the irish scandals, a guy holding a sign with a little kid and an old clergyman with a robe-tent approaching with his hands out like mr burns and a big grin. The thing is when it comes to paedophilia, you can't think it of anyone you think you know, so you discard images like that as silly fairy tales without thinking beyond the metaphor. You don't want to be wondering if the guy you just shook hands with gets drunk before sunday school and manipulates extra private tuition with the shy kid who doesn't have a dad and cries a lot.

Sorry to be so graphic there, but it is what it is in all its vileness, and everyone complicit ought to feel fucking ashamed of themselves. I'll stop before i derail, but the moral standards these people are hiding behind are very shady indeed, because somewhere in that chain of command someone knew and kept quiet about the institutional rape-centres the Catholics kept running for many decades. Unless they've leaned on their own faith-leaders to press for justice and HARD, their hands are dirty, and they are ridiculous to stand there shouting shame on someone else.

Man, i think i'm in love with this woman..

I often feel like some group needs to go to the churches that are producing these groups and stand outside them filming the patrons, with giant posters showing the atrocities that church has perpetrated over the years in the worst possible way (it might be hard, how do you graphically show child rape without it being child porn?)
I would hope that, once they see how disgusting these tactics are, they would stop supporting those who do it and they would stop.
Turnabout's fair play, isn't it?

United States of Secrets (part 2) - "Privacy Lost"

kceaton1 says...

As a last comment I'd like to say this about the over-reaching abilities about this "Program" created at Bush's behest.

Sometimes there is such a thing as loving something TOO much. So much so that you become the biggest danger to the thing you love (more so than the terrorists; I wonder if some of the terrorists realize this yet).

In this case the terrorist's attacked. Instead of a measured approach and reaction, they hyperventilated and thought the world was coming to an end...

As a metaphor, they loved the American public so much they stuck them in a room so that no one could get to them. They then shut the door and cemented over it, so that the terrorists couldn't find a way in, and we couldn't walk out into danger. They played loud music near the room so no one could hear our screams, to find us or get to us--so that we were safe from anyone that might be evil. They eventually stopped bringing food and water, in case it was poisoned...just in case.

Then one day they remembered that they needed something badly from that room, so they themselves could survive--it was us; but, we were long since dead.

The thing is, is that we need a government to--it's a fine balancing point.

There IS such a thing as too much love and overreaction.

The Newsroom's Take On Global Warming-Fact Checked

Chairman_woo says...

My hope is that this will take the form of progressive revolutions. When the food and energy start to become scarce people might start to recognise that the ONLY people who can get us out of this mess are engineers, inventors and scientists.

Maybe we will even be smart enough to put them in charge and ditch the whole idea of politics for the sake of politics all together.

A man can hope anyway. The alternative seems to be extreme left and right wing movements fighting over metaphorical ash and bones.

Co2, methane and other undesirables in the atmosphere could probably be shifted if there was a concerted global effort, doubly so if we factor in 50-100 years of technological advancement. I'm sure the task would be herculean but it would probably also be the greatest thing we ever achieved as a species! ("screw your ancient wonders, we built an air scrubber the size of Missouri!")

Kalle said:

I had a thought about global warming the other day. At what point does the survival of the human species become more important than the democratic process? When is it ok to just say ....fuck it ..your voice doesn`t count in that matter?

Perhaps someday countries will go to war over the amount of co2 each other blasts into the atmosphere..

Imagine emerging economies being told not to burn fossil fuels for the sake of everyone.. little unfair but still necessary..right?

Is this is a case of mixed metaphors..? I wasn't being pessimistic, at least. I suppose i was being flippant in my evaluation of religious practitioners. So i would say that the glass is half full of prejudice, ignorance and apathy towards investigating things systematically cos it's easier to say 'We are God's children, of course we are at the centre of the universe,' and other dubious conclusions!

Mostly, seeing as you asked, i was just trying to be funny; i think organised religion is a pile of shit. Spirituality and afterlife is fine, as is belief in a form of divine being or beings, but organised religion is where you let some utter nobody who translated a piece of writing (authored or translated by another nobody) a very long time ago dictate what you can and can't do, or can and can't feel good about.

to which you only responded with a blanket statement that somehow, since your position made points,it therefore was understandable.

which is NOT what i was addressing.
nor was i trying to "win" anything.
i was just metaphorically letting you know that your fly was open.

and you responded with insults.

well you go right ahead and keep swimming in your mudpit of ignorance and keep telling yourself that people who point out your flawed arguments are all being "stupid and obtuse".
