Let's Talk About Facebook

newtboy says...

Astonished @bobknight33 posted a video about Trump using more stolen data to further manipulate voters. Kudos.

This whole debacle is a prime example of why I won't ever join Facebook or other similar social media. It's been clear from day one they are not going to keep your data safe. Posting your life there is like writing everything you do and think in your diary that you then leave open in the public library every day, assuming the librarian is going to keep it private. Getting your information there is like wading into a mob of angry people and believing what you overhear them scream at each other. I just do not see the appeal, but I am pretty anti-social.

Cancer Screening Myths

transmorpher says...

9037 studies demonstrate that red meat causes cancer. I'm well aware that you can manipulate statistics, which is why there is an organisation called the World Cancer Research Fund. They've sifted through 500,000 studies and currently have identified 9037 legitimate studies. wcrf.org/int/research-we-fund/cancer-prevention-recommendations/animal-foods

You might not like vegans or Dr. Greger, but you cannot argue against over 9000 peer reviewed, and medical journal published studies, that are unrelated, done by non-vegans, and then filtered through by non-vegan scientists to assess the quality of the results.

EDIT: They say that more than 300g of red meat a week puts you in serious danger of developing cancer - that quite clearly means it is at least as dangerous as smoking.

newtboy said:

Yep...created and run by the guy who erroneously claimed the W.H.O. produced a study proving eating red meat is as cancer causing and dangerous as heavy cigarette smoking (they didn't say any such thing).

Operation mockingbird ?

“Operation Mockingbird” was a fully implemented CIA program to spread disinformation throughout American media.

CIA Director William Colby testified to the Church Committee that over 400 CIA agents were active in the US media to control what was reported through American mainstream television, newspapers, and magazines.

CIA Funding and Manipulation of the U.S. Mainstream Media According to the Congress report published in 1976:

newtboy says...

Holy crap. WTF is that?
Attractive women can't go out in public because you're creeped out by them?!? (Super attractive? Well, 'eye of the beholder'.)
And just being near them makes men creeps?!? And Pee?!?
Why do you hate attractive and or young women?
Why do you hate men based on a nearby women's appearance?
Why would you say that, even if they had come with him?

What you're doing is 100% body/appearance shaming. Shaming them for being young, fit, and not unpleasant to look at. It sounds like jealousy, and it sounds incredibly inappropriate considering what you said afterwards. Shaming women for being attractive and fit is not supporting women in any way. Calling this a hooters is pretty insulting and dismissive to those professional, skilled, likely intelligent women, some of whom were customers.
PS: look at 3:02 for your "real women"
Where's the anger at the at least two fit, attractive men in that video?

-"I brought the common sense and facts, too. Just not eloquently or accurately"-
When you're facts and 'common sense' are inaccurate and nonsensical, you didn't really bring them.

Edit: do you have the same reaction every time you see George Clooney or DiCaprio? What disgusting creeps they must be in your eyes, since they're often accompanied by attractive women....who I guess are all Hooters bimbos, right?...and what disgusting creeps those women are, hanging out with attractive mimbos Must every red carpet be Thunder down Under? It's creepy how they manipulate women like that. You do realize they're manipulating you, right, because it's creepier if you don't.

bareboards2 said:

All the super attractive women creeped me out. Too many of them. Keanu doesn't know any normal looking women? Creep. Pee. (I'm a cis woman, by the way, for those who don't know.)

Keanu Reeves Tactical 3 gun shooting

bareboards2 says...

Sorry. You're right. I shouldn't have laid it all on Keanu.

It is just creepy.

They are employees of a business. Who hired them? Where are the normal looking women?

This is Hooters, only with guns and not hamburgers and beer. Or whatever they sell there.

Would there be any normal looking women, when the intent is obviously to draw male eyes to this business?

Do you realize that you are being pandered to, you folks who are making fun of my "outrage"? Do you know you are being manipulated? Do you understand that it is super creepy if you don't know you are being manipulated?

There is a great new movement right now of women speaking up and making clear that they are intelligent and have loads to offer other than beauty. It was super thrilling to watch the Golden Globes and hear all these amazing and brilliant women talk so eloquently about something other than who made their dress.

To go from that to this parade of nubile flesh as a backdrop to gun skills .... creeped me out. It isn't real. It isn't what the world looks like. It is manufactured and disturbing when I personally am hungry for images of women DOING and being, instead of being looked at.

There are women out there who love guns and are knowledgeable about guns. And they don't all look like this.

You know I adore you completely, Chaos. And I wasn't accurate in my original post. Thank you for calling that to my attention.

But it isn't true that only you brought "common sense and facts" into this. I brought the common sense and facts, too. Just not eloquently or accurately. Being talked about like that, being reduced to "outrage" instead of being accorded some respect for noticing the unnatural assemblage of super attractive women obviously being used to as eye bait... well, that is common. Very common. And uncool.

You, though, dear friend, are super cool.

ChaosEngine said:

That seems kinda unfair on Keanu. This is not him hanging out with friends, this is a montage of him training at a tactical shooting school. The “super attractive women” are employees of the school (have seen them in other videos).

How one tweet can ruin your life - Jon Ronson

ulysses1904 says...

Makes me think of the guy who videotaped the woman at the Chick-Fil-A drive thru, figuring he would be lauded as a hero for challenging someone who worked for that company. And it backfired and he became unemployed because of his "principles", which was pretty much what he expected of that woman. And then he played the victim. But he brought it on himself, the woman who tweeted about AIDS in Africa is a whole other story.

Now that everyone has the power to self-publish and broadcast just about anything to the entire world I'm seeing the power that it unleashes in others. I posted a comment on an unsolicited news posting in my FB feed, regarding the Pulitzer Prize picture of the black woman holding out her hands to be handcuffed by the police in riot gear. And everyone in the comment section is going predictably teary-eyed and goose pimply over it, with the usual cliches of iconic, defining, inspiring, uplifting, etc.

And I wrote "don't be so easily manipulated, it's stagey and predictable and Kardashians use this shit to sell sugar water." or something like that. My point being that we have gone from prize-winning pictures of the Viet Nam war (e.g.) to the whole process being co-opted by pop culture, like everything and anything else. Of course I got bombarded with claims of racism and people who pitied my soul. And some were musing on whether to try to track down my employer. I deleted my comment, this world has gotten too fucking weird for me.

Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal

ravioli says...

What this company (snapperstech.com) did is put together an upgraded control "rig" to manipulate facial expressions, taking into account muscle limits and interactions, skin elasticity, etc.

A little more info in the video's YT desc :
-Adaptive rig: which allows combining any number of expressions using optimized list of blendshapes.
-Real facial muscles constraints: the advanced rig logic simulates real facial muscles constraints.
-Advanced skin shader (for Maya and Unreal): holds up to 16 wrinkles maps and 16 dynamic diffuse maps with micro details and pores stretching.
-Easy to manipulate using facial controllers and/or GUI.
-Compatible with all game engines and animation packages.
-Smooth transition between all the expressions.
-Adjustment layer: freeform manipulation of multiple regions of the face to create unlimited variations of the same expression.

The real-time rendering part is achieved by the Unreal engine itself. The final rendering performance still relies mainly on the hardware used.

ChaosEngine said:

Yeah, the real-time aspect of it is insanely good, although I'd still like to know how much of the rendering budget it takes up, i.e. is this usable in a game or just a research project at the moment?

What do you mean by "only one modifier is being applied"? Which is my other criticism of the video; a voiceover explaining the tech would have been more interesting than the music.

I don't believe that "multiple modifiers" would make this look better, for the simple reason that if you're demoing a technology like this, you end with ALL the bells and whistles to make it look as good as possible.

Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal

Khufu says...

what you saw was a mesh with a skin shader rendering in real-time so that's how fast it renders. didn't look terribly hi-res, the real advancement here is the quality of the skin shader(for realtime) and the fidelity of the facial rig, having proper face target shapes all blending together to get complex movements with skin compression/stretching/wrinkling at this level have historically been out of reach for anything but pre-rendered cgi.

They can probably drop libraries of mocap data on this with face markers that match those manipulation points you see in the video, and animators can use them to animate, or clean up/change the motion capture data.

and the skin textures/pore detail/face model are not a technological achievement as much as the work of a skilled artist, and the deformations are the result of someone who really knows their anatomy.

since there is no animation in this video, no performance, it's hard to judge how realistic it feels. the real trick is always seeing it animated.

ChaosEngine said:

Sorry, not quite there yet. There is no way anyone would actually look at that and think "oh, it's a video of a human".

The uncanny valley is one of those instances where the closer you get to perfection, the more obvious the flaws are.

But in terms of a video game character, this is very, very good.

I would love to know a few more details about it:
- how expensive is the rendering? We're just seeing a face on its own. If we drop it into an actual scene, will it still run?

- how well does it animate/lip sync?

Unreal Engine's Human CGI is So Real it's Unreal

SeesThruYou says...

In motion, there's subtle clues that tell you it's not quite human, BUT, if you were to manipulate it into an expression and take a screenshot... I don't think I'd be able to tell it wasn't real. It's the muscle range, the way the wrinkles appear, the way the blood coloration changes in response to the tightness of the skin, the pores, the subsurface scattering, the facial hairs, etc... incredibly convincing on a whole new level, even extremely close up, which is where the illusion normally breaks down. Very very impressive.

AUTOMATICA 4k - Robots Vs. Music - Nigel Stanford

hamsteralliance says...

CGI rendered tests to further fool you into thinking it's not all CG. It's been done before.

This seems like a job for Captain Disillusion!

EDIT: Perhaps I should clarify a bit. By CGI I don't just mean it's all 3D renders. I mean more that it's all computer trickery of some sort. Some 3D, some compositing, lots of time manipulation. Just look at how often he's clearly green screened in. Look at how the cymbals move. A robotic arm can punch through a piano? There's a lot of CG going on here. And if it's in the crazier shots, I don't see why it wouldn't be in the simpler shots.

eric3579 said:

I don't think all of it is. These tests seem like they wouldn't have been done if the whole video is cgi.

Why Magneto Can Never Be In the MCU

Mordhaus says...

Ahem, Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch. Just as an example, although not seen (yet) in the MCU, both Dr. Strange and Charles Xavier together could not totally defeat her.

Quicksilver could probably take him down as well, but he is no longer available in the Avengers movie canon.

While not shown in the MCU, and therefore up to speculation, Thor's hammer can actually absorb Magneto's magnetic manipulation and cannot be controlled by Magneto. There is an alternate universe comic that shows Thor with multiple versions of the hammer, but only one is the actual Mjolnir. At one point, Magneto captures one of the non-Mjolnir hammers because it has a base of Iron instead of Uru (the metal used to forge Mjolnir).

So, pretty funny, but far from accurate. Obviously, Hulk doesn't seem to care who he smashes (if they are heroes or villains), so I don't think he would back down either.

Malcolm X and Ali Warning About Liberals and Multiculturalis

DuoJet says...

"Malcolm X Warning About Liberals and Multiculturalis "

Malcolm X does nothing of the sort. He warns about "...whites (specifically politicians) who call themselves Liberals". That's a significant departure from Liberalism, and whatever the shit "Liberal" means these days. It's also a departure that won't be clarified on CNN or Fox News.

And he's right; the GOP doesn't suffer any penalty for failing to give a f@#k about the poor, about African Americans, etc. They've taught their constituents to demand this indifference. The Democrats DO suffer a penalty, to a limited degree, and thus that brand of deceitful manipulation is common.

Here's the thing; both parties suck, because their bosses (big donors, corporations, the leisure class) suck.

Pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

This is what a coward looks like

MaxWilder says...

The most ironic part of this, imo, is that this guy's beliefs are the same ones who drove lynchings in times past. The ONLY reason he and others like him are being so damn careful to do things by the book and emphasize how "peaceful" they are (when not running over counter-protesters with cars) is because they are vastly, vastly outnumbered and have zero social power to manipulate the courts like they did in decades past.

They are "peaceful" from pure cowardice, and when they taste the first glimmer of power, they will apologetically reign violence upon their scapegoats.
