Woman's front yard cactus suddenly shoots up 25 feet

newtboy says...

Donkey shin!

I like PBS documentaries. I can’t recall if “The bat man of Mexico” was a NOVA episode or a one of (I checked, it was a Nature episode- https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/about-bat-man-mexico/25220/), but I’m pretty sure that’s where I learned that bit of useless trivia. He tracked the bats by making their poop glow!

I am completely useless for remembering people’s names, and barely hit and miss with dates, but useless information sticks OK.

Comedy wise, I thought it was pretty hit and miss. Some of the jokes just weren’t that funny.

But for “speaking truth to power”?? It was *quality.

I tried lemons in the ground here....it lived almost 3 years, but never had a lemon.
I have peach, nectarine, and plumbs in 1/2 barrels now, doing OK, but the peach and nectarine could use more room, they're both around 8-10 ft tall. The nectarines might need more cold than we get to bear fruit, but it's happy so far a year in.
I also started a trio of Asian pears in a 1/2 barrel about 10 years back, twisted together in a spiral, then planted the whole thing a few years ago, barrel and all (with the bottom pulled out). A year later I pulled all the staves and hoops up and it's been pretty happy ever since. I've had hit and miss luck just planting smaller trees directly in our ground, so I try to get the trees pretty established these days before putting them out.
If I try an orange tree, I'll probably put it in a 40 gallon pot (I like the air pots now over 1/2 barrels, they seem to make a difference in growth speed and are far cheaper) and move it inside during winter for at least the first 4-5 years, and definitely bonsai it to keep it around 8 ft.
I have a small orchard of apple trees now....around 30, and a few other fruits. At least I know they do great in our climate.

EDIT: We have had years with over a week at 20°F in the past, so I'll definitely have to cover an orange tree at times once I put it outside. If I keep it small, no problem.

It sounds like you'd be just about OK to plant a tree in the ground outside. The (U.S. based) article I found on temperatures said more than 10 hours below 25°F would kill one. I think we might occasionally get to -3°C here for one to two hours before sunrise at mid winter in a cold year, but it's really only cold enough here to kill chillies and coriander from frost, not trees.

I have a lemon tree in a large pot, and have only ever had one small lemon from it... although that's partly from the annoying gall wasps we have here If you want normal sized oranges you'll need to plant a tree outside. They grow to about 5 metres (uhm, 15 feet maybe?) if you don't prune them (but you should).

John Green Debunks the Six Reasons You Might Not Vote

vil says...

Again democracy cant decide the death penalty, abortions, taxes, religion, defense spending and all the other puny details. Democracy can choose leaders, agendas and assign responsibility.

Noocracy is just a new name for despotism, you let inteligent people have their way, the first thing they do is take care of themselves. Stupid people must have a fair representation. Experiments are being conducted to just let them think they have a fair representation, but I am afraid they may not be that stupid. I mean I hope they (we) are not.

Democracy is fairly simple and straightforward - either there is a way to change the ruler or there is not. Putin cant lose. Erdogan cant lose. Chinese communist party cant lose. Castro cant lose. Not democracy. Obviously the details of implementation are very nuanced, like if there are only two parties is that democracy? Etc.

Basically if the ruler makes it impossible for himself to be deposed peacefully democracy ends.

So let us assume some artificial system to pick perfect leaders could be devised. They would have no responsibility (after all they are the best possible leader) no compassion (everyone else is stupid) and no motivation (Im no. 1 so why try harder). Add a secret police and Stalinist Russia is born.

The ignorant herd is painfully hit and miss, but so is the stock market. This is still preferable to any dictator, even a clever one.

Epic Rap Battles: Frederick Douglass vs Thomas Jefferson

Mordhaus says...

I've found that a good amount of their videos are hit and miss, the last couple have been extra 'meh' though.

Lawdeedaw said:

I do lol, and laughed. But hated this video. They made Douglass seem like some angry black thug instead of the powerful and articulate narrator he was. And basically Jefferson just gave up. They should have had Douglass rap first, say only, "You owned slaves," then Nice Peter could have come out and said, "Who won? Who's next?"

And I am glad people finally see this since the Bruce Banner vs Bruce Jenner came out. Finally....

How it Feels (through Glass)

Deano says...

You're still getting a little too excited. This is a simulation. None of this is final. But even the promise of this does not obviate the need for a phone, The interface certainly does not have the richness of a phone. And I've not seen them suggest this is a phone replacement.

There are areas where it will struggle:

Simply being able to see a large amount of information from the device and without interfering with normal sight. With my phone I can read quickly and then be back in the real world by looking up. I don't see myself reading reams of data with this thing. I'd love to try though!

The interface is different/more limited. You lose haptic feedback and long-presses to expose different functionality. I'd love to see how good a feature-rich note-taking app will work. Voice-recognition is the most likely use.

But voice recognition remains difficult and performs variably.

And nothing to say of how slow it might be to change networks, adjust settings etc. Many things might be locked down to ensure a smooth experience for the average user.

So, integration (or how Glass will be useful).

Glass will serve as a nice entry-point into the phone experience. You could open the notifications in Glass but you might want to focus on recording some video.
Or you hover on a film poster and have IMDB open up the details on the phone. You might have a lot of these moments in a day. Imagine building up a list of pictures, quick ideas/notes, something useful someone said and then take your phone out only when you sit down. Everything is there for review. Glass might be a very good inbox.

I could instantly sync my photos. It's thus backed up on the phone straight away (and later on the net) and could be auto-shared - I don't need to issue copious voice instructions. Same with video. Glass will gather data but you might want it to hand stuff off to the phone. And net access isn't always guaranteed.

Looking up real world objects, scanning barcodes, even raw data and have it converted into usable data. You could hold up your phone but it's a nicer experience to have a document rendering onto your phone while you look at a page of data or even take a phone call. And you don't have to get the phone out of your pocket. Multi-tasking for the win!

I view pdfs and spreadsheets on my Note 2 all the time. I've not scanned much because it seems hit and miss and there's no cool software to do much with it. This would be amazing with my laptop. I often get printed documents or scraps of paper. Being able to instantly scan and digitise on the go would be almost revolutionary.

The point is Glass will be a very useful *extension* of the device you are already carrying around. Which people will be carrying around for many years to come.

I hope it's cheap as chips because getting it pinched off your face would be fun

I'd like to hear what sort of integration you have in mind, because I can't think of one that would be useful.

Glass is literally an Android phone in a new form factor. I haven't seen Glass doing anything yet that my phone doesn't do, the lone exception being attach itself to my face.

If they can solve the battery problem, I think they could bring Glass to market by 2015. That's not to say more traditional phones will be instantly be replaced but Glass will be able to fully replace the phone of those who do purchase it.

Key & Peele - Drug Deal Gone Bad

Bill Burr's Take On A Musical Tragedy

kymbos says...

I find Burr the most hit and miss comedian to my sensibilities. Sometimes I just don't dig him at all - usually when he's shitting on women. This time I had to balance that distaste with my long standing grievance of Yoko and her influence on the Beatles.

That she sang on the White Album just annoys the crap out of me.

I don't always agree with your channel assignments, but have added back as many as I could of these If it really goes viral I can swap death for viral... they certainly intend it to, but manufacturing viral vids is a bit hit and miss.

FYI the viral channel is for viral ads, not for videos that go viral. But I think there are a total of five people on the sift who actually know what that channel is for, so whatever (it should really be renamed).

I'm pretty sure this was created with the aim to be viral. How else is it supposed to be shown? You don't tend to have 3 minute adverts on tv.

Sure. But my point was that most people assume that the viral channel is for videos that go viral (which is not an unreasonable assumption), but really it is only meant for viral ads created for the internet. Whether or not the ad successfully goes viral is has no bearing on its place in that channel.

#viral doesn't need to be renamed, it needs to be deleted. Not only is it among the most misused channels on the site, it's also completely worthless even when used correctly.

Renamed, or re-purposed as the channel that everyone thinks it is already

I did actually know it was for viral ads, but hadn't gone the step further of thinking that a failed viral advertising scheme is still suitable for this channel.

Dumb ways to die certainly counts though either way, since it has close to 3 million youtube views by now. Whichever advertising agency came up with the idea must be pleased It won't hurt the profile of Cat Empire's Ollie McGill, who wrote the music, either.
