Let's Talk About Bathrooms

artician jokingly says...

Have you ever been in a woman's bathroom? I have. There's no urine in there. I mean, on the floor. I know, right? I always thought that was universal; public bathroom = swimming in urine, globs of wet tissue, and I just threw up a little thinking of the other stuff.

Women's bathrooms aren't anything like that. Sometimes one of them doesn't dispose of a tampon right, which can be yucky, but otherwise: no urine. Doesn't even smell that bad!

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for a unified society and breaking down gender roles and segregation, but I wouldn't force a men's room on anyone.

ChaosEngine said:

Oh FFS ,why do we even have gendered bathrooms anyway? Just have a room with a bunch of urinals and a separate room with a bunch of stalls. Use one if you can urinate standing up and the other if you want to sit down.

People need to get over this and stop being so fucking precious.

Brand Name vs. Generic

Mordhaus says...

That is true now more than ever. Back in the 90's most ingredients in name brand meds were still sourced outside of China. Now most ingredients are sourced from China, so you are taking the same chance of getting something wrong with name vs generic. Sadly, we still only check about 7% of the ingredients shipped in for quality, simply because of the sheer amount and cost that would be involved.

eric3579 said:

People buying name brand over the counter medication opposed to the generic has always been a huge pet peeve of mine (especially pain relief meds). I always think they are either ignorant of the facts or just easily duped (suckers).

As an example all these 'Excedrins' have exact ingredients in the exact amounts (250mg acetaminophen 250mg aspirin 65mg caffeine) and same number of pills(200)
@Wallmart
Excedrin Extra Strength $23.95
Excedrin Migraine $15.54
Equate(generic excedrin) $4.00

Blows my mind people buy Excedrin or Advil or Tylenol,etc.. and not the generics. Stop being suckers.

Disney's The BFG - Official Full Trailer

newtboy says...

I really think they need to quit using the initials on this one. BFG is already a well known abbreviation, and not a small child friendly one. Parents are going to have to explain this to kids time and time again, and many will get it wrong.
I kept waiting for someone to kill that giant with a really big f***ing gun. Maybe that's the climax of the movie?

The Most Costly Joke in History

newtboy says...

Acceleration is a big factor if you're doing any evasive maneuvering, because turning scrubs speed and you have to gain it back, preferably fast. It's not everything, but it matters.

Don't get me wrong, I do admit there are interesting, possibly unique, even useful features of the F-35, I just don't see any need for it, and certainly not at the price. When was the last time an American was shot down in a jet fighter?

My main issue with this plane is that it's sold as a replacement to nearly ALL other planes, which it had to be because of it's price tag. It doesn't do most of it's 'jobs' as well as the planes it replaces, is incredibly more expensive than they are, and they weren't in need of replacement in the first place, so why did we have this $1.3 trillion poorly performing jobs program for the aerospace industry during an economic crisis? We had much better things to spend that money on, and killing this plane project would not make us a whit less safe or ready.

Nice, I like that idea, a swarm of jammer drones to eliminate all electronic advantages. I'll put your name in the hat for the evil super genius prize this year.

Agreed, the 1 on 1 fighting scenario is not the plan anymore. That doesn't mean it never happens though, or won't ever happen in the future, and as Americans we want/expect to win every single time.

transmorpher said:

The F-35 can fly both faster, and slower than the F-16, and longer at high angles of attack that would stall most planes. It although can't out accelerate the F-16 though since F-35 is heavier. But having the best acceleration isn't really a factor in modern air combat, where missiles are being thrown at each other from any between 20-100+km's range. As long as you can accelerate good enough, which being a fighter plane it can.

The F-35's afterburner-less supersonic speed is more important in a BVR(beyond visual range) engagement, since that's what allows you to put more distance between you and an enemy missile. The idea being that you fly perpendicular to a missile making it cover more ground and it runs out of fuel and speed so it falls out of the sky before it can reach you. Of course to lock onto a stealth plane you'd need to be quite close in the first place, by which time it would have shot you down, at least that's the theory.

If it comes to a close range scenario, say enemy AWACS manages to detect the F-35s, and direct a bunch of enemy fighters through a set of mountains to sneak up on the F-35s. And a visual range or even dog fight ensues. Then the F-35 would use a short range missile that can turn 90+ degrees and shoot behind itself . Which no other plane can do since all of the sensors are forward facing on all other planes.

But you're of course right, there is always eventually going to be a way of countering the stealth advantage, it's an arms race after all. Most likely it will be countered by some kind of cheap jamming drone swarming, which would make the F-35s sensors useless, and missiles too few, forcing the engagements to happen at shorter ranges.

------------------

What I mean by dog fighting is a one on one engagement where each plane is trying to furiously out maneuver the other. That is a rare occurrence. There is a WW2 era video that explains the tactics used that make the one on one style dog fighting obsolete. https://youtu.be/C_iW1T3yg80?t=530

The planes have a system where as soon as one plane is engage by an enemy, then your wingman, or a spare clean up squadron comes and mops it up, since the enemy makes it self an easy target when engaging a friendly.

Does he really have to be Trump level awful to be properly called a dickhead? I don't think so.
I'm not saying he's a fascist, or the worst officer out there by far. Not being the worst is no excuse for being terrible, and it's a terrible officer who lies to kids, effectively dissolving any trust the children may have had for officers.
Lazy from law enforcement, especially lazy in their knowledge of the law they enforce, is terrible, and absolutely not worth the over $200000 per year he's paid.

Don't get me wrong, the kid could have been more restrained...but the kid is a kid, and so a childish celebration of his 'victory' is not unexpected or so out of line....it's childish. I expect adults in authority to be above that. I expect adults in authority to ignore childish taunts from children (which, to his credit, he mostly did). Mostly, I expect adults in authority to not be childish themselves, even to children. Apparently that's WAY too much to ask, even for >$200000 per year.

The surfer not considered hot enough for sponsorship

Babymech says...

I fully see your point, and I really wasn't trying to say that the scale of one problem diminishes the need for adressing another problem. I was more trying for this:

The gist of this video seems to be that because she's a great surfer, she shouldn't be subjected to shitty attractiveness standards. I'm saying that she shouldn't be subjected to shitty attractiveness standards, but I don't care if she's good at surfing. That doesn't play into it for me. I think the video posits a false relationship, where being good at a pastime is an objective and terrific quality, and being attractive is a base and demeaning quality.

Don't get me wrong - I think everybody who's not struggling to get by should be doing regular physical exercise, for a number of reasons. I just don't think we owe it to the people who are the best at a form of exercise to provide them with a living.

Do I think our expectations on women's attractiveness for success is unfair and unconstructive? Yes - it's harmful to society at large. Do I think that her being good at a sport makes this somehow more unfair, and more unconstructive? Not at all.

ChaosEngine said:

@Babymech of course teachers and civil rights activists (and most importantly software developers ) should be paid. And before that, we should make sure that children have enough to eat, and stop wars and fix climate change and so on and so on.

I don't know how many times I've said this, but just because problem A is worse than problem B doesn't mean that problem B isn't a problem.

Caspian Report - Geopolitical Prognosis for 2016 (Part 1)

RedSky says...

@radx

I tend to see controlling the quantity of money along with the interest rate as a valid way for central banks to influence the economy when necessary but I admit in or after crises they are generally almost useless. Economics being a social science is always going to be notoriously unreliable in both prediction and in isolation the causes of a prior event, some would say almost useless.

Controlling purely the interest rates on overnight bank deposits for banks at the central bank (what setting the rate is, as opposed to the commonly held belief that the central bank dictates lending and borrowing rates) is if anything of little impact. These rates can be at 0% and if banks consider economic prospects poor, that will not cause them to lend any further.

Such was the case in the US in the immediate years after '08. i would argue the only action to have real economic impact was the buying up of distressed mortgage securities by the Fed. The parts of QE1, 2 that involved injecting money into the banks basically just led to them investing in low risk securities and earning interest (effectively just sitting on it) because they were not willing to risk lending it.

While I'm not a big fan of ceding authority to a largely independent organisation, I have to admit that since central banks have become independent, inflation in those countries has become a thing of the past. Now granted they get things wrong (e.g. Greenspan inflating the '08 bubble) but their main advantages is being willing to take measures that cause short term pain but long term gain. I don't think any elected politician would have been willing to take the measures Volcker did to curb inflation for example. In fact, while he was at the Fed, Reagan's government effectively inflated the Savings and Loans bubble.

Videosifts Sarzys Best And Worst Movies Of 2015

Sarzy says...

I dunno, it's certainly not a perfect film by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think its appeal rests solely on Star Wars nostalgia. I saw it with a friend who's never even seen the original trilogy, and he still loved it. I don't think the reviews or the word of mouth would be as strong as they are if it were just a nostalgic wank-fest (which it is to a certain extent, don't get me wrong).

As for your Kylo Ren issues -- the guy had been shot by Chewbacca's blaster, which is established earlier in the film as having some pretty serious stopping power. So he's injured during the Finn/Rey fights.

Drachen_Jager said:

Have to disagree with Star Wars.

Without the massive appeal the series built, this movie wouldn't get many good reviews at all. The plot is an insane jumble of random events and plotholes that should have been embarrassing. To enumerate a few:

1) Randomly Melennium Falcon happens to be at the right place, right time (I can buy this, barely, because it's fun)

2) Before they can even have a full conversation (something the filmmakers seemed determined to avoid, even though, as this list shows, dialogue can make riveting cinema) HS and Chewie burst in. I could buy into this, if not for the rapid-fire pace of these events, as it is it just seems random and things are starting to get silly.

3) Before THEY can even have a full conversation not one, but two gangs HAPPEN upon the group, for no reason, except some executive was apparently worried about giving the audience a moment to reflect and MAYBE develop some connection with the characters.

4) Kylo Ren kicks ass. He's the only Force master EVER to stop a blaster bolt mid progress. He's got some serious juice!

5) Kylo Ren can't fight his way out of a paper bag (a bag named Finn) narrowly winning the fight and merely wounding the otherwise fairly useless ex-stormtrooper.

6) Kylo Ren is BEATEN by some chick with no training whatsoever! (Don't get me wrong, I like Rey, but the good guys are SUPPOSED to be weaker than the bad guys, and what's the point in Jedi training if she already kicks Evil's ass? )

7) WTF is up with this whiny Emo? He is, bar-none, the worst villain of the entire SW series thus far. It's not surprising that they defeat him, he's so useless, what's surprising is it takes them so damn long to beat his whining Emo shitty-at-lightsaber-duelling ass.

IMO the whole film was a hot mess that reeked of far too much studio interference which turns artistic vision into "more explosions!"

In summary, and this is totally true, my ten-year-old son, who loved the first 3 SWs (I won't let him watch the prequels) when asked what he thought of it replied, "Too many explosions." This is the mediocrity paradigm of big-budget Hollywood films at it's pinnacle.

why is the media ignoring the sanders campaign?

ChaosEngine says...

"if this tactic is unsuccessful, they will do what they did to ron paul and demonize sanders.they will portray him as a "kook" a weird, fringe "goofy' candidate.which is exactly what was done to ron paul."

Except that Paul WAS a goofy, fringe candidate. He had no mainstream support from either side. Sure, the libertarians loved him, but the conservatives hated his stance on drugs and progressives hated his stance on, well, pretty much everything else.

Sanders probably has more actual support amoung his liberal base than Paul did amoung the conservatives, but there's a very real chance that he WOULD lose a presedential race against a moderate conservative.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Sanders get in. Ironically, I think the only chance he has is if Trump gets the republican nod.

China's gamified new system for keeping citizens in line

JiggaJonson says...

@enoch @Asmo

I don't fully agree that the new system is as fear-free as the video suggests. One could easily argue that there is a valid fear of losing privileges.

I'm honestly wondering if it will create a two party system of haves vs have-nots at different levels where association with lower numbered people becomes something to avoid but all the plebeians will associate with each other.

Think of it like this:

I wonder further if the people at the bottom of the heap would end up saying "fuck this" because they're being stuck with a bad lot in life and now have companions (the only people who will associate with them) who feel similar. It's not THAT dire in as much as I think it has a very real potential to backfire.

Don't get me wrong, I still think that this kind of system is far BEYOND amoral. Lets discuss some realistic things that we can do here in the states to help our fellow Earthicans.

Teenager wins $400,000 for video explaining Relativity

dannym3141 says...

This is an excellent explanation for someone of his age and his skill with video editing obviously helps a lot. It held my interest, the world needs more entertaining and educating videos like these.

My only criticism - and some youtubers have already pointed this out - is that the explanation of time dilation "..the same bodily change that happens on earth takes much longer to occur when you are moving so fast.." is wrong.

Signals sent within the body can be analogous to a clock - any fixed duration measured between two ~lightspeed reference frames will be different, including seconds measured by an atomic clock - but time dilation specifically has nothing to do with the mechanics behind how you measure the time or the time it takes a signal to travel. It's a property of the nature of spacetime. Time itself actually slows down. There's no 'trick' to understanding how or why, it's just a property that it has. We can forgive him because he'd already demonstrated that physics is the same in any inertial reference frame and there is no "preferential" reference frame; therefore the motion of the reference frame can't be responsible for the observed difference, so he obviously already really knew all this.

There's no shame in getting that wrong, because he'll be taught more and better about it as he progresses through school. Generally the arbitrary subjects are the hardest to live with because you just have to accept them as they are rather than 'understand'. Quantum mechanics is the same - you just have to accept the rules and apply the maths. Everyone struggles with it, even Feynman said "If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics."

Why I REALLY am quitting social media -- Essena ONeill

Well... not to be an edgy cynical teenager about this, but she's doing this while launching a new lifestyle site where she'll be telling her followers (and the new ones gained from this) about living every day as the essential you through vegan beauty and body positivism.

Don't get me wrong - I definitely think that that's better than her previous message... I just have a strong suspicion that her new message will still to a large extent also consist of vacuous crap on the internet.

t's possible to love someone
And not treat them in the way that you want
It's possible to see your eyes
Be the devil in disguise with another front
And, it's possible to change this world
Revolutionise the boys and girls
It's possible to educate
The next generation that will rule the world someday

The changing times of the 21st century
Means nothing to me cos I would rather be
At the beginning of time, earth would be mine
Living in luxury
Discovering a world out there
Believing in the sun earth water and air
Take me there so I could see the world bloom
Standing on a sea cliff howling at the moon
Creating a world for the open minded
A unique perception of truth inside it
I know we could find it
It's just a matter of where and when we collectively decide it
The world is not a vicious place
It's just the way we've been raised
Discovering time and space
I know that we could make a change
Rearrange the way that we appreciate the world today

It's possible to love someone..

Now as i start to put my mind into words
I stall I fall I'm loosing it all, my inhibitions
The thought of wasting a way
The fact that the music's at a place not far away
Yet I stray and stick to my world
In love with my life my beliefs and a girl
Is it luck that I love this crazy place, the human race?
Don't get me wrong I still think we could change
But this life and the fact that time exists
And were here and we don't come equipped with it all
Half the fun is learning and I'm having a ball
While the world keeps turning my role is small
But I'll make a change
I hope you're feeling the same way
I hope you're seeing what I say

It's possible to love someone..

In this concrete jungle we live
Our survival is love that we give
Now my instinct is guiding my way
It's true what they say
The world is your chance to create
