Brittany Maynard - Death with Dignity

Sniper007 says...

On published research:

'Well, here’s a medical expert. For 20 years, she had a front-row seat that very few doctors or researchers ever occupy. Thousands of medical studies arrived at her desk. She was a “queen of judgment.”

She is Dr. Marcia Angell. She was the editor of the most prestigious medical journal in the world, The New England Journal of Medicine.

On January 15, 2009, the NY Review of Books published Dr. Angell’s devastating assessment of medical literature:

“It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published, or to rely on the judgment of trusted physicians or authoritative medical guidelines. I take no pleasure in this conclusion, which I reached slowly and reluctantly over my two decades as an editor of The New England Journal of Medicine.” —(Marcia Angell, MD, “Drug Companies and Doctors: A story of Corruption.” NY Review of Books, Jan. 15, 2009.)'

That is enough grammar Naziing for one early morning post, thanks guys.
I got plenty of it from my editor mother. If she couldn't get me to pay attention to my writing after 40+ years of trying, you have little chance of doing better....especially first thing in the morning.

Key & Peele: Office Homophobe

scottishmartialarts says...

I doubt it was intentional either but that's not really the point. The things we unconsciously say can often be just as important as the things we consciously, intentionally say. When we're talking about whether or not specific groups of people are acceptable to a broader culture, so much of how people interpret such a discussion is through the lens of their own inculturation and unconscious assumptions.

Take a look at the black community's response to the Ferguson situation on social media. One of the memes that cropped up was a comparison of headlines between stories where a white person commits murder versus when a black person is a murder victim. In the former, the headlines express a sense of disbelief such as "Theatre shooting perpetrator was 'brilliant scientist', says graduate advisor". In the latter case, the headlines tend to imply the victim got what was coming to him or her, i.e. "Shooting victim had history of drug addiction, multiple arrests." Does that mean the news media hates black people and is hopelessly racist? No, of course not. I bet none of the editors who ran those headlines thought for a moment that they were imposing racial biases upon their stories. But, the biases are definitely there -- it's a shock that a white person would kill, but it's expected and probably just that a black person was killed -- and that shapes how other people perceive the affected groups without it even entering their conscious consideration.

In the case of this video, I doubt the comedians in question considered what I've brought up, but again the note on which it ends is definitely one of "if gay people just acted normal then they wouldn't have any problems in society." I find that problematic, whether it was intentional or not.

I'm not even saying you're necessarily wrong -- but that's the darkest, most cynical possible interpretation of that sketch, and I sincerely doubt it was the intent.

3D Object Manipulation from a Single Photo

newtboy says...

That's why they include a wire frame editor...so you can take a simple, basic model and modify it to match your individual cat nearly purrrrrfectly (if you spend enough time on the wire frame, and if the unseen parts of it are mirrors in texture and color to the known parts in the photo).
Really, I think that's not what this is for. It seems to be for modeling and manipulating every day objects in photo realistic ways with ease, not turning your parents around in the Christmas photos so they look like they're staring into each others eyes lovingly instead of both angrily turning their backs on the other! (although you COULD use it that way, if you're artistic and patient enough) ;-)

EDIT: One thing no one mentioned yet is it seems to also automatically edit IN the background, one less step to do manually.

If only wishing or ignorance made reality go away. I suppose to manipulate that old picture of your parents you can just go to the magically internet repository with their high quality 3d models stored in it? Or you pet cat with the funny tail, or the tree in front of your house? Or the custom carved vase?

When you actually go try and match high quality 3d models to real world objects you quickly discover just how many are unique and hard to find.

newtboy says...

...and apparently one can use a built in simple editor to modify the publicly available stock wire frame models to match them exactly to the item in the photo, movie, painting, etc. I see that it's likely more work that they imply, but far less work than previous editors or other ways of doing photo realistic CG. I give a tentative thumbs up.

The model quality is completely open since you can use a near infinite resource know as the i.n.t.e.r.n.e.t. to get the model you need.

Jeremy Scahill: media has failed to cover massacre in Gaza

LarryASingleton says...

99.9% of the knuckleheads commenting here negatively about Israel have never read, let alone heard of, books like Andrew Bostom's Legacy of Jihad and Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism. Or From Time Immemorial by Joan Peters. Or a book I just started, A Lethal Obsession by Robert Wistrich. Thing is I'm one of these "hope springs eternal" guys because I keep thinking people are like me who was once about as close to being a card carrying member of the KKK as you can be without actually being one. Until I read some books like Malcolm X. Black Like Me and others. While I was in Jr. High getting jumped by black kids trying to punch and stomp my guts out. The useful idiots limit this "conflict" to simply Muslims against Jews yet its a lot more profound than that:

Supplemental Article “The First and Last Enemy: Jew Hatred in Islam.” by Bostom (Frontpage Magazine archive)
http://archive.frontpagemag.com/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=28549

People just refuse to acknowledge the Jew-Hatred that is part of a Muslims DNA. Don't believe what those Interfaith frauds tell you. "Moderate" or not; if you don't hate Jews you're not a true Muslim. If you don't believe that please explain the hatred that is like a disease in Gaza. And if you have half a brain you know it's been there LONG before Israel won its Independence.

Pitbull dances with his human

Stormsinger says...

This second vid is definitely the superior performance. In both, a better cameraman/editor would have helped. A closer view, or more zoom, would make a better shot, I'd think. Still a decent video, but it doesn't do the pair enough credit, IMO.

Woman photoshopped in different countries - What is Beauty?

Ickster says...

I believe it was an experiment to see what alterations people in other cultures would perform to "make her beautiful", not an attempt to get people to give her a photo that made her feel better about herself. Obviously, there were differences, but I think the lack of skill on the part of the photo editors kind of washed them out.

Payback said:

I also gotta say, she must have self esteem issues if she thinks anyone would need to do much to "make her" beautiful.

Testing Crows' Causal Understanding of Water Displacement

grinter says...

My head hurts too much to read the paper right now, but I suspect that most of this can be attributed to learning, and that a 'causal understanding' is not being demonstrated here.

The important figure to look at here is Fig 3, specifically the first trial in figure 3, before the crows had a change to learn each particular task. Performance is, slightly, better than chance for each task except tasks D and F. But these are NOT naive birds. There are only 6 crows used in this experiment, and before the experiment they were all trained to perform a water displacement task for food reward. The better than chance performance on the first trial for some of the tasks could, and probably is, a result of the similarity between the 'correct' choice in that task and the training condition.
A: A water filled tube is more like the water filled tube in the training condition, than is a sand filled tube.
B: Heavy blocks are more like the heavy stones used in the training condition than are the light blocks.
C: Solid black weights are more like the black stones used in the training condition than are the hollow cages.
E: A nearly full tube is more similar to the training condition (which took only two stones to reach the food) than a nearly empty tube.
Tasks D and F, where the crows did not perform better than chance, have choices much more difficult to distinguish from the training condition (with both choices in F being nearly identical to the training condition).
What's more, the sample size is tiny, with a max of 6 birds for any task, and only 4 of these same (very experienced) birds for tasks E and F. You cannot do meaningful statistics with a sample size of 4.
If someone who has actually read the whole paper wants to show me how I'm wrong please do. Until then, I think the editors at PLoS ONE need to be more careful with their choice of reviewers. The journal, although noble in it's stated mission, is still young, and its reputation is still fragile.
"Our results indicate that New Caledonian crows possess a sophisticated, but incomplete, understanding of the causal properties of displacement, rivalling that of 5–7 year old children." How on earth did they let that pass! They know the press will have a field-day with misleading statements like that.

As lost as Bill is on this issue at least this clip provide both sided of the argument. Fox does have more balance than MSNBC

If the editor was a cancer patient or such then would Bill would be ok with the dope eating editor?
