Sores coming up on my lips. My nose... I don't know what's goin' on in there. But legs are good, cubs are good, now I got to go the the creek."

Bernie Sanders Polling Surge - Seth Meyers

dannym3141 says...

I would say this is pretty much on the button, though. This way clearly isn't working, but the people who have money and power have convinced the majority that nothing can change and even if we could we would be worse off.

I don't think i'm being melodramatic or conspiracy theorising either. Rupert Murdoch and the Barclay brothers tell people what to think and they think it. Democracy has been subverted by money in most western countries with corporate lobbyists willing to spend billions to get a politician on-side, "anti-lobbying" legislation that actually attacks grassroots and activists from broadcasting the truth at election time (and leaves lobbying untouched), and unfair campaign spending/fund-raising that leaves the rich with all the advantage.

The media in Britain have consistently presented a skewed and incorrect representation of the left-wing party leader. It is clearly a campaign by vested interests to stop a man who would bring their reign to an end. The language that they use and the metric by which they judge "their" guy is COMPLETELY different to how they judge the "other" guy.

What's worse is, fairness and balance in the media has deteriorated to such a point that it is now absolutely fine for all this to happen.

As Lawdeedaw said, we are already a long way up shit creek and we didn't even pack the paddle. Some people are getting very rich and are very comfortable, they have immense power and they will say anything to convince you that it's best that it stays that way. Including lying and using manipulative language and statistics in their national publications and television stations. And all you as an individual really has to do is vote someone into power that cannot be corrupted. You've got Bernie, we've got Jeremy.

"Too rich to be corrupted" is farcical though - let's only trust rich people then. Not only does this suggest that rich people are more trustworthy just by dint of having lots of money, but that poor people are less trustworthy because the greedy little paupers can't restrain themselves from 'upping their station'? I would rather judge someone on who i perceive their character to be than based on what is in their bank account, but i guess i'm fucked up like that.

Four hikers and a suspension bridge...

ChaosEngine says...

If they were carrying that much weight, they're stronger than they look!

I'm kinda surprised this happened. After Cave Creek, dept of conservation (who maintain the tracks) are generally pretty good at these things.

newtboy said:

The report I just saw said it was fully inspected by a state engineer less than 18 months earlier with no issues found.

There's been the suggestion that their back packs made them too heavy, but those packs didn't look to be over 200lbs each to me, which they would have to be to make 4 people overweight for a 10 person bridge.

Four hikers and a suspension bridge...

ghark says...

A guy I went to school with was one of the survivors of the Cave Creek tragedy in the 90's (also in NZ) which had 14 deaths. It apparently was an issue of a poorly constructed platform, and the students shaking the platform.

Four people survived the fall of about 30m, I heard one of them was able to use their partner as a 'taboggan' pretty much, which cushioned their descent, allowing them to survive. The ultimate sacrifice. Pretty horrifying stuff, you wouldn't be the same person after.

This Is Your Brain On Extreme Weather

newtboy says...

Also living in the Pacific Northdamp (not so wet anymore here), I can say for certain that our weather has changed. The last 5+ years we've gotten 1/2 or less of our average rainfall, and the last 2 years we've barely had a winter. Yesterday it was in the upper 70's, even low 80's here, and it's been in the upper 60's to lower 70's most of this winter, and a large portion of last winter. Those are our normal summer temperatures, and it's mid Feb?!

When I moved here near 20 years ago, we were in a 'normal' pattern which meant raining about 1/2 the days between November and March, and temps in the 40's including some freezing. It's easy to notice when the river that's usually full of fish in Sept/Oct is now a knee high creek until Feb.

The Secret World of Dragonflies

newtboy says...

As a young newt, I spent many a day hunting dragonflies down at the creek and in the bogs. I've always found them fascinating, and still think their wings are some of the most beautiful structures in nature. (and they're crunchy too, yum!)

TYT Republicans destroy and have no solutions

billpayer says...

It's not that Dem's didn't turn up it's that geriatric retiree racists bigots and curmudgeons showed up (the true welfare state), since they don't fucking work.
Most decent people are too busy to vote, and that is no coincidence.
The only people who vote Republican now is old farts, who thankfully will all die out soon.
Everything that spews out of the Republican hate machine is music to my ears, because they are so fucking dumb, they still haven't realized its a minority majority and they are up shit creek. This is their last death throws. Bye bye Republicunt$

VoodooV said:

I'll never understand why democrats do not show up to vote on midterms. The Republicans didn't win the midterms...Dems just didn't show up so R just won by forfeit

They'll show up to vote against Palin and McCain, and to vote against Romney/Ryan. But they're silent during midterms.

Freaky Floating Hat Street Performance

skinnydaddy1 says...

I did that once... Of course it was right after a BMX crash in a dried creek bed we were using as a natural bowl. And I was not double jointed at the time... well unless you count broken bones as a joint........ Even have a couple of scares from where my teeth bit the elbow.... Was not a pleasant experience.

Cops try to raid garage sale

SDGundamX says...

I'm no lawyer, but I think the citizens in this case didn't properly understand the law. Normally, they are right--the 4th amendment states that the police need a warrant to search a private residence. However, there are several exceptions to that rule including two that are applicable here--the plain view exception and the emergencies exception (see this link).

The plain view exception states that if the police have a clear view of what they believe to be illegal activity, they may enter a private premise without a warrant. And those airsoft guns, which from a distance do indeed look like real firearms, are in plain view from the street.

The emergency exception states that police may search a premises without a warrant if the evidence can be easily destroyed or moved before a warrant can be issued. In this case they had an anonymous tip that illegal activity was taking place at the location? If the citizens were actually selling guns, by the time the cops could secure a search warrant the sellers could have packed up all their stuff and left town.

I think in this case the fact that the guns were on sale in the driveway in plain view coupled with the anonymous tip gives police all the probable cause they need to search the premises without a warrant. I think if these people decided to be assholes and file a lawsuit claiming their civil rights had been violated or something, they'd be up shit creek without a paddle.

Almost Died: Whoa...that was close...WHOA!

spawnflagger says...

Just 2 cents on funeral processions in PA - every car in the procession has to have a little flag on it (magetic, provided by the funeral home); every car has to put its 4-ways (hazards, blinkers) on the whole time; it's pretty easy to see them; as a driver NOT in the procession, you cannot (legally) pass them on a 1 lane road, but 2+ lanes are ok, and opposite side of road people just go about their business. Also, the procession itself does NOT stop - if you are a member of the procession, you go through stop signs, red lights, etc (slowly of course) so that all the cars in the procession are always together.

It's a slight annoyance when the procession is very long, but I've never witnessed nor heard of any accidents being caused because of a procession in PA.

Whatever state "Suck Creek" is in, they should change the law to forbid stopping on the opposite side- respect or no respect, it's just dangerous. Even if the truck was doing the exact speed limit, and was paying attention- if it was a blind corner no one could stop in time.
