Is Organic Food Worse For You?

ghark says...

Perhaps the most important thing with anything that you buy from the store is to read the label, organic or not. There are brands that try to use clever labeling to try to mislead customers, as the video alludes to.

One of the ways labeling can be deceptive is that it is often extremely unclear where the ingredients come from. A box of cereal might be 100% organic, but if the ingredients are all from China you simply cannot know what quality you're buying, for a multitude of reasons, including poor regulation, poor water quality etc.

A couple of other points:

Farming traditionally, without synthetic (petrochemical) fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides is sustainable... forever.
Farming techniques that require oil will have to be phased out eventually, because it's a finite resource. So in this regard, the video is wrong (in regards to them both being able to sit side by side), at least in the long term.

Grow your own food (you don't need much space for a garden), or buy local. Transportation/shipping causes an unbelievable amount of pollution.

The Hole in the Ocean

yea I was a bit confused when they started talking about the Marianas trench. Good vid though, very informative. The part where they showed how we know about the earths polarity flipping every few hundred thousand years was really amazing.

Everything We Think We Know About Addiction Is Wrong

ghark says...

There are many different models of addiction, what we know is not necessarily 'wrong', it's just not complete, and one model (of addiction) certainly doesn't apply to everyone. Some people lack impulse control, some people learn addictive behaviour patterns socially, some people use addictive substances to fill an emptiness inside themselves.

So I guess the point is that both the experiments provided useful information about addiction, but this video does provide some really good insight into the flaws of the first one, and links well with the quite horrific prison situation in the US.

More studies confirm Calcium still doesn't prevent fractures

ghark says...

Seems like a pretty good analysis.

Taking just about any supplement just for the sake of it, is pretty much like eating lollies, except they aren't tasty, and can have side effects. It's not really that calcium supplements are the main problem, it's that people are gullible.

Hugh Jackman teaches Jimmy Fallon how to eat Vegemite

ghark says...

He got a couple of things right - use freshly toasted bread with butter, but it doesn't have to be white, and also the butter doesn't have to melt in, butter is awesome no matter how much you use Basically, use the vegemite like salt and you're good. It always boggles me when I see the video's of people tasting it - they may as well be eating a spoonful of salt, they wouldn't enjoy that either, but salt, used correctly, is an essential ingredient in most dishes.

My favourite is whole grain toast, lots of butter, a very thin layer of marmite/vegemite and some avocado +/- some freshly sliced tomato.

The dudes that put us in the original (smaller) supercluster must be pretty mad right now
The new definition of what a supercluster is... is simply awesome (pun intended).
