Autism Simulator

newtboy says...

I have to agree, the visual representation seemed…off.

I was more interested in what the child indicated with the mixing board, that sounds (and sights I assume) are not filtered to highlight your focus, in fact sometimes the object of focus is somewhat filtered while ambient noises aren’t.

I often think of myself as partially deaf because I can’t seem to focus on voices no matter how much I try, but I often hear tiny noises others can’t until I point them out. I don’t think it’s an ear problem.

i don't think that the visual hallucinations are a good comparison to what it can be like to be in an area where one can't concentrate like that.

In the middle of typing this I got distracted and opened up the Katydid eats a wart video that's trending here at the moment. in the middle of typing THAT two of my neighbors started mowing the lawn at the same time and my wife has all the windows open so I know what my allergies are going to do and i don't want to walk around with a headache all day so I better close them should I do it now or whehn i get don....

Evolution of Electronic Music (1929 - 2019)

kir_mokum says...

really random selection of some of the worst music out there.

i really dislike that this is how a lot of people view electronic music. most of this is pop music and it completely ignores the huge innovations that happened in house, techno, jungle, dubstep, garage, ambient, etc. in the last 40 years. the impact of electronic music has been chronically under appreciated since it's inception.

Set it to 1/4 speed at about 1:28 for a really kickass slideshow, with accompanying ambient horror movie background drone! Seeing all the windows simultaneously kick out of the top floor of (what I'm going to call) front building #4 at 1:34 is interesting.

Debunking Hydration/Dehydration - Adam Ruins Everything

Digitalfiend says...

So are we not supposed to preemptively hydrate when performing intense exercise in adverse conditions?

For instance, I've done 40-60 min cycling time trials (or any prolonged FTP effort really) in 30-35c+ (ambient) weather and have noticed that if I don't properly hydrate, I'll stop sweating part way through which can lead to a loss of performance. I've never noticed cramps but I can lose up to 4-6 lbs of water over a hard 2 hr ride in the heat. Since I sweat a lot when I workout, the heat doesn't bother me too much but I do need to drink more. Is it possible our brains are not tuned to quickly respond to a rapid loss of water, like during a hard cardio workout? Therefore, drinking water when you feel thirsty might only be a good recommendation when you're performing at low- to moderate-levels of exertion.

I agree that most people are likely not dehydrated but not consuming water during a hard cardio workout seems like bad advice.

No Man's Sky Expectations Vs. Reality

TheSandmaN says...

Funny video and the bad harmonica version of the Jurassic Park theme is hilarious however.... the game is actually really damn fun!
It's really a true space sim without much of a story line. A rough comparison can be made to Minecraft (before single player story came out) only many MANY orders of magnitude larger. Or really any great sandbox game out there without much story.
If you like space, sci-fi, exploring, and discovering, then this game is for you. One of my only wishes for this game is for a true multiplayer component, but for now it's Zen and the Art of Space Exploration. Soundtrack by 65daysofstatic is incredible, and only barely surpassed (for me) by the Eve Online ambient soundtracks.

Pig vs Cookie

I'll disagree that's it's perfectly fine food. Bacon is a type 1 carcinogen. Which means there is no doubt that it causes cancer. Non processed pork, is a type 2 carcinogen, which means it causes cancer, but they need more data to confirm it.
The risks aren't quite as high as with cigarettes but it's an extra set of dice I'm not going to roll. That's information from the W.H.O.

I'm not sure if this method would work in Hawaii, but they've had a lot of success in Europe with stray animals by using a catch a release program http://carocat.eu/the-catch-neuter-and-release-approach/. It's a little slower, but not that much since cats and dogs have a pretty short life-cycle when they are stray. I think you could make a few alterations and, the invasive boars instead of running away from hunters, would begin to approach them instead, and you could register, and neuter them.

Damn you blew my cover. I'm am indeed a pig, hence my bias in this thread. Here's a picture of me and my boat driver in the bahamas http://www.tecnologia-ambiente.it/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/maiale-isola.jpeg

Well, if you think wasting perfectly fine meat/food is OK because you don't want to get in the habit of killing your food, yes, our definitions vary. To me, once it's dead anyway, wasting it is definitely bad for no reason, and using it is good.
Also...bacon! If that's not good to you, you're not a real human being, and I accuse you of being a pig that has learned to type.

So to make it seamless would they need to up the ambient temperature plus the speed of the nozzle? Or could they just make the nozzle quick enough that the previous layer hadn't started to cool before the next one hit?

Structure Fire from Firefighter's helmet cam

notarobot says...

These guys are idiots. They should be operating from a ladder placed ON the roof in case there is a collapse.

The gear they have will protect from ambient heat for a while, but only for a very short time in direct flame. The face masks, for example, are made of acrylic. If the heat gets much over 400ish degrees, and they will start to melt. If any of these guys fell trough the roof into a fully involved fire, they wouldn't have much time. And those suits aren't very mobile.

What colors do YOU see?

Zawash says...

Wrong white balance. Is it a white and gold dress in blue lighting or a black and blue dress in yellow lighting? Depending on the ambient lighting, the monitor (and the current settings) and the person watching, you'll get different result.

Just look to the white and black blotchy fabric to the left, and force yourself to see that it is black and white in yellow lighting - and you'll (probably) see the dress as the correct black and blue.

Here's my own adjusted picture, after a quick adjustment in Adobe Camera Raw. The only changes are the white balance and one stop darkening to the left version (the original picture is severely overexposed).
Left: Temperature -30 / Tint +18 / Exposure -1.00
Middle: original
Right: Temperature +65
