Obamarama

So, is Obama going to be president, I wonder? Well, it sure sound like it just about now. My personal favourite in this whole debacle would be Mike Gravel, but what can you do.  Obama is a fresh face, His speeches are certainly inspiring, I love the sheer skill invovled when he speaks to a crowd. its god-damn magic how he does it. I'm not talking about the message itself, but the rethoric, theres just something fascinating about watching someone who is good at what he does, and as far as speeches go, Obama is as good as it gets. But will he be a good president? I honestly dont know. For all the emotion and power of his voice, there is little content, It's going to change, he says, Change! Yes we can! but he doesnt really get at what exactly IS going to change so damn much.

One cant help but to be reminded of George Orwells Animal Farm :

-The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

But Orwell isnt famous for seeing the bright sides. America is a funny place, and occasionally it does suprise. They've seemed to atleast partially have gotten over skin pigment differences, and that must be labelled progress of sorts.

Obama may do the speeches, but when it comes to singing it, RoyZimmerman may be the best at describing the wonderfully twisted divided religious strange United States: America

I was campaigning all night, the vote is tomorrow. I found some idiots who put Hillary signs right outside the polling place, let's just say those signs aren't there anymore

I agree with BicycleRepairMan, looking at political stances and such he is no different then Hillary. Sure his character might be better, and its wonderful to see someone being able to speak coherently again after so many years of NUCULAR. I wonder how the GOP is reloading it's slime guns, am waiting to hear all about him being a terrorist, a muslim, with middle name of Hussein. Fox News will be going beserk if he gets the nomination.

Though I think its all a facade, I don't think he will change so much. He pulls alot of string with his hope and change rehetoric, but doesn't really say all that much of substance, its classic JFK in that sense, that why he can't be caught not acutally doing anything, unlike Bush who promised the world democracy and a trip to Mars.

Will Obama unravel all those years of consolidating executive power? Reform DOJ? Reform OLC? Come out against US torture programs? increase taxes? rebuild the import based economy? End the war with dignity? Wane off oil?

Though one bright side is that speeches by him internationally would be something to really witness, I can totally see him pulling a "Ich bin Berliner" somewhere... "Ana Arabia" would be awesome to ease Middle East tensions.

But then again part of me thinks there is a white neo-Nazi loading a sniper rifle right now somewhere out there.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

He is an amazing orator- and I think he does have substance, ideas and a strategy. If you watch this: http://election08.videosift.com/talk/Chicago-Trib-and-SF-Chronicle-Endorse-Obama

You'll see that he does have plans and solid policy experience. The thing is, now is not the time for him to be delivering policy speeches- he's doing exactly the right thing to move people through simple mantras and the idea of change.

Hillary is a smart, smart lady- and would make a fine president - but I worry about her electibility, the baggage of Bill that she brings with her and the unavoidable polarizing scandal that is sure to erupt at some point.

Vote for Obama tomorrow Sifters!

Again, Americans face the same tired dilemma.....least of the worst-Obama, is groomed for slick-Comes from one of the most corrupt states, of any local or state government-Just like San Fran has a history of fire, Chicago has a history of complete corruption, ingrained from early on-(history of fire, too)

He says nothing, but speaks well. Next time you listen to his litany of strung-together feel-good phrases, imagine a tape-loop of meaninglessness, on par with that of GWB's, and the only real differences are his affiliations from HIS lobby and backers, same same same......the emperor still wears no clothes-he simply makes you feel better in your delusion.

Taxes will increase, as well as the deficit, illegals will continue to flood into the country, crippling already paraplegic social services-lobbyists will continue their steady bribes, campaigns will go on resembling a junior-high pep-rally of pro-football game, and The Constitution will continue to become closer in value to toilet paper as our currency will to so much pulp it represents-

We had enemies in the 1740's that wore uniforms and carried guns-Now we have enemies that travel in jets from campaign propaganda rallies, to the next special interest, that could give a fuck about freedom.

When you are truly free, a government, appears as simply another one of many human constructs destined to wither and die, and be reborn again.....

I'm amazed at the people here who are buying into the "no substance" canard. He has written 2 books, put up a detailed website, put out and defended both an economic stimulus package and healthcare plan (both of which differ in important ways from Hillary's), and surrounded himself with foreign policy advisors who--unlike Hillary and her ilk--look to change our modus operandi almost totally as regards diplomacy and foreign policy. He's also a professor of constitutional law at one of the finest law schools in the country. The guy oozes substance, and I don't see how it can be missed.

Farhad: in his speech tonight he explicitly came out against torture programs, and has said repeatedly (in the past) that he'd raise taxes. The latter would include letting the Bush tax cuts expire and ensuring that the estate tax doesn't get gutted by the right.

Also, Dag is spot on regarding the content of his big speeches. Remember, they are usually post-primary victory speeches. It would be ridiculous to come out and try to turn them into a rambling policy analysis.
