This was my seminar paper for my studies of engineering cybernetics at the University of Stuttgart. The objective was the implementation and comparison of different swing-up strategies.

is it camera based or force sensor of the articulation point?

It's a little frightening to see robots transition from vainly trying to do things as well as a human, do doing things no human can do.

On the one hand, it's incredible because the movement of the double pendulum appears so chaotic.

On the other hand, it seems like a pretty straightforward system so it's not entirely surprising that it's possible to monitor, calculate and manipulate it.

But that doesn't keep it from being mesmerizing to watch.
