Muslims Go Nuts at Swedish University Movie Screening

(youtube) This preview of an anti-Islamic amateur film was held on a college campus in Sweden, 2012.

The audience was made well aware of its contents before viewing, - they all understood that the film was blassphemous against Islam and all of the people attending were affiliated with the college in question, the vast majority of them being students from the college.

- And yet still the Muslim students couldn't control their reaction to the viewing and flew into an hysterical rampage, attempting to destroy the film projector in the process and screaming out cries of "Allah Akbar".

Pretty obvious they expected this reaction by having police present in advance.
Pretty obvious the film was intended to get exactly this reaction.

Normally I'm against setting people up like that.

In this case though I actually find myself considering if this isn't a rather brilliant method of essentially purging the extremists out of society. If your willing to jump straight to violence at someone else's free speech, you are a problem and need to be removed. The faster the extremists are weeded out from the moderates the better off everyone is. It's disturbing how many self-proclaimed 'moderates' support capital punishment for blasphemy and converting away from Islam. IMO holding that view classes you firmly as an extremist and someone completely at odds with the society in which I live and wish to continue living in.

There's something weird about this video. Any backstory on why the cops seemed to be *literally* outside the room? The whole thing just seems stupid. Even if the rage is real, were they really expecting that much backlash right away? Why would they do it then? "Hey let's intentionally provoke some already overly-sensitive people!"

ChaosEnginesays...

Man, fuck those people. They clearly didn't need much provocation, and they clearly came looking to be offended.

"it's our country too"
Fair enough, and you have the right to be offended and the right to disagree with that which causes you offence.
When you start saying things like "if you don't want trouble, take him out of uppsala", then I hope your ass gets thrown in jail.

And shame on them for backing down.

@ChaosEngine - I am only expressing suspicion for benefit of the doubt. All we know of this situation is what the video summary says it is, and what we see in it, which is carries very little information in itself. *For all I know* this could be a complete mock-up just to get people who are already against this demographic in an uproar, and cement their existing prejudice.

That is very unlikely, but none of us know what really went on in this video, and saying "fuck those people" is the textbook definition of prejudice.

Assuming this is exactly what it says it is, even in the best case scenario, you're basically taking a room-full of burn-victims and setting the place on fire to get a reaction from them.

Babymechsays...

Racist idiot baits fundamentalist idiots, and the world keeps getting slightly worse...

Also @artician, no, this isn't a mock-up. Vilks was invited to hold a lecture on freedom of speech at Uppsala university, and to illustrate that he chose to show part of Sooreh Hera's photo series 'Allah ho gaybar'. Since everybody knew he was a racist asshole who deliberately wanted to provoke Muslims, a bunch of fundamentalist Muslims who wanted to be deliberately provoked showed up at his lecture. Idiots met idiot, and combusted.

Oh and since he'd been getting death threats for his previous hijinks (depicting the prophet Muhammad as a dog), the cops were on hand for this occasion.

Sorry, it isn't. I have observed these peoples behaviour and have judged them based on that experience. Not that I didn't say "fuck all muslims". I simply have no time for these specific people who went to an admittedly stupid movie with the express purpose of being offended.

And your analogy is kinda hyperbolic. It's more like a group of burn victims going to see a fire eater and then complaining about it.

I sometimes wish I had this much passion and conviction about something that I could react in the same way. About anything, not necessarily religion say the Government or animals, but I just dont give a shit.

articiansays...

I understand what you're saying. And yeah, admittedly my burn-victim analogy wasn't too apt.

But I have no way of knowing, from a small video and what it's described as, that the entire thing was not a room full of actors with a common purpose who mocked the entire thing up to make Muslims look bad. The video is so awkward already it threw it into question for me, and that's where I find it prejudicial to say "fuck these people", because there's a big assumption there. It's unlikely, but it's possible.

Lastly, like @Babymech said, there's some backstory there that can make all the difference. So with a little better understanding, in the end the only difference between our opinions is that I kind of think everyone involved in it, film-maker, police, students, etc. are all fucking idiots.

Don't trust the description. I've seen this clip before without any material of the videos shown at the beginning and in totally different context. Also, the source has very strong racist background so wouldn't trust that "they were warned" crap.

ChaosEnginesays...

We're probably closer than you think. Aside from the police (who IMHO were just doing their job), yes, they are all fucking idiots.

I have mixed feelings about this. The more media that is out there that causes muslims to lose their shit, the less often they will lose their shit in the future (they can't go nuts over everything). On the other hand, intolerant speech sucks (fucking neonazis). Free speech has the edge though, gotta let everyone have their say.

ChaosEnginesays...

I think we need to separate the motivation behind this example of free expression (which is basically "this is why we should only have whites in europe") and the content of the expression itself (which is basically what? Mohammed was gay?).

The first is hateful and should be called out as such.

The latter is, I think, pretty innocuous. Yes, it's offensive to muslims, but I don't think ridiculing a religious icon qualifies as hate speech. If it did, videosift is in serious trouble.

"Allahu Akbar" seems to allow/justify/rationalize any stupid/wrong/reprehensible shit.

I have my own version. I tend to call people bad names when I drive (BION), kinda like in the Louie CK bit posted here a while back. One day, I decided that all of that negative energy was probably bad for me (and others), and decided to try to alter my behavior. I would catch myself cussing someone and say to myself, "stop calling people names, asshole". It worked pretty well for a while. Then, one day, I noticed that I was cussing people with regularity again, but I would always follow up with a "stop calling people names, asshole". It makes me feel better when I say it, I guess; less of an asshole. "At least I'm trying", ya know? Lately, I've been dabbling in "shut up, idiot". Maybe I can find some true enlightenment there.
