That's Matthew Silver. He's not crazy, he's a provocative clown who operates from a considered philosophical basis (you can agree with him or not). I spent a fair amount of time observing and talking to him over the span of a few weeks at Union Square in NYC. Great guy! Yeah, he's a little off sometimes but people who dedicate themselves to thinking about big societal issues and taking some action to subvert those things which they perceive as dangerous tend to be.

Oh, and I imagine that Jesus (the person, not the "demi-god") probably sounded about just as crazy to the Romans as this guy does to a lot of people.

Is it bad that this made me laugh my ass off?
Feels uncomfortable, like laughing at a handicapped person (I know he isn't, but he comes off as full blown cray cray) That said, it's freakin' funny Maynard.

Thpppptttt...

TheFreaksays...

I didn't hear any deep societal issues being addressed and the depth of the commentary was consistently shallow.

In fact, these are the same mainstream, shallow attempts at 'profound thought' that we get from Hollywood and Madison Avenue. The type of mass appeal positivity that viral advertisers try to capture because it so easily plucks the emotions of the everyday, busy, 9-5 commuter.

And here it's being delivered by exactly the type of person that will be ignored, out of hand, by the same busy people who will go home and endlessly upvote and share these same thoughts. As long as they come in the form of a youtube video with dramatic background music. (ahem) Why is our acceptance of the message conditional on the social acceptability of the medium by which it's delivered? Do we fear being ostracized to the community of mad men if we don't hate his message?

I feel like I'm being mocked for my readiness to expose the vapid sentimentality that's replaced meaningful emotions in my life.

Maybe I missed the point. The music was a fitting addition though.

I like this video. Upvote and Share.

Ostracized to the community of the mad men. Dig it.

@TheFreak: I see what you're saying and I don't ostracize you (as much as you'd LOVE IT), but isn't it the tendency of the intellect to take moments of existence and dramatically augment them? Like a daydream memory only in your head.

BEGIN DRAMATIC MUSIC

The simple form of filming and interviewing this man is as overly dramatic as the scoring, if it were not skipped over by our technocratic brains. I say "our" because were it not for my obsessive hindsight into the comments of others, I'd have ignored these details, as well.

Perhaps the music stands out as more farcical because WE have fallen into the dead zone of normalized behaviors, memetic response; ignoring the obvious fact that a living man in a time now gone, was recorded on camera for all of the world to see and hear and gawk at.

All forms of tampering with that moment in time, including the recording of it -- which he advocated against in the form of "live in the moment" and "LOVE NOW" -- are merely augmentations of the majesty of biological existence; human reality. To be removed of context or placed into whatever context an intellect perceives as worthy.

And then to "CREATE" as is now manifest in our minds as any range of dramatic or mundane; having now been sifted for us to discern or merely to enjoy in passing. We can choose to enjoy fleetingly or dwell on with intellectual criticism, as much as we can ignore it.

Were I deaf, I'd have no understanding, but I'd still see this wild man.

END DRAMATIC MUSIC

Yeah, fuck this.

This isn't profound and it isn't inspirational. It's bollocks.

And I don't care if the guy's secretly a genius and this is some kind of subversive performance art. It's just not interesting on any level above the kind of bland platitudes that Hallmark produces.

You want something profound and interesting? Go read some stuff on zenpencils.com. You could open a page a random and it will be better than this.

JAPRsays...

"Love now; love, now." Sometimes there's no "sane" way to try and express some of the biggest things in life, imo, so fuck it, why not? He had good messages even if his wording was strange.
