Hand Made Beautiful Dining Room Table - The Priceless Gift

This is the 1st of 3 videos describing how I construct a dining room table for me wife using reclaimed and rough sawn lumber, and only hand tools. This is the entertainment version and I will be releasing 2 more versions describing in detail how I build the base (The Priceless Gift Base) and the table top (The Priceless Gift Top). -yt

Love the sounds the hand tools make even when sped up (especially tapping the wood pieces together with the hammer)

If I could go back in time, I think I would have loved to become a carpenter (if I had the skill..) It would be great to be able to craft gorgeous things like this!

It's not too late. I know someone who made it his second career, after becoming disillusioned with his first one (industrial chemist I think, or metallurgist? Something like that).

I did this exact same thing - that is, build a hand made dining room table for my wife. I didn't care about using reclaimed lumber, but I did want to avoid using glues. I used lag bolts and screws - I figured it would last longer than glue. Also, I used about 1/10th the number of tools he used. But I did use a sawsall and a drill.

I used all pine, but did a faux aging process with vinegar and steel wool, and black tea. It turned out awesome (after 12+ coats of spar varnish on the top... ug). I have two matching benches. It's all very rustic, durable, and functional.

Very cool video!

Paybacksays...

My brother-in-law had his own Suzuki Motorcycle dealership. He was importing bikes that came in these awesome red mahogany crates. He was kinda disgusted that it was assumed they would throw away or burn the crates. So, he made my sister a dinning room table out of the planks. Fully expandable top with a herring-bone design and zig-zag shaped inserts.

This was back when full-size VHS was the norm for video cameras, so there's no video of the build. He's kinda focused when he does that sorta thing, so there's only completed photos, no during stuff.

Not just a great woodworking video, but great video editing!

And I love the high-speed sound effects.
