Dad wants textbook banned for dismissing creationism as a biblical myth...

what a dumb overly tanned fucktard. I find it absolutely idiotic that people are assumed to have to hold religion up to some higher standard then other ideas or beliefs. This guy is a brainwashed idiot; going up to bat because they called his beliefs a myth.. what about those that think all the Norse gods or the Hindu gods or Egyptian gods are real... OHHHHH snap, oh no you didnt ??? you calling RA in to question ? ima get myself on the news and bring this book against ra's sun god intentions into question...

MAN. people who believe in invisible unscientific, unproven JACK ASS beliefs. really piss me off. I am really just mad that humans can be so, blatantly ignorant and idiotic. whe are all cogs in our species demise, its funny though how we can witness it and understand it, yet do nothing about it.. oh thats right, god will make it all good in the end, no worries mates

acidSpinesays...

I wouldn't be so hard on the dude, I'm pretty sure I've seen him on TV demanding references to creationsim be removed from biology textbo.... oh that was just then.

Judeo pronounced like studio, 3:00

If nothing else it could be claimed that myth here is a technical term. All religions have a creation myth and if you want to compare the views of different religions on how the world was created you are talking about creation myths. Technical term, no judgement passed, no offence stated, complaint dismissed.

Hive13says...

Creationism IS a myth. There is absolutely no basis that it is scientific fact. It was in a BIOLOGY book. You know, the science of life. Schools teach science. Churches teach myth.

Trancecoachsays...

all kinds of *terrible

and perhaps we now need a *facepalm channel, thanks to thick-headed folks like these.

(Perhaps folks who believe in Creationism don't understand how science works and how it provides a basis for evolution because they themselves are, in fact, closer on the evolutionary chain to Neanderthals than Homo sapiens sapiens.)

Sketchsays...

He does say one thing right at the end: "Get involved! Look at the textbooks your kids have! Engage your schools and school boards, and... and... and follow through on it and make them accountable for it!"

GenjiKilpatricksays...

And there other things in that book that were *AHEM* technically inaccurate...

Because you know those Knox High School parents. Real sticklers for technicalities.

And wait, he's not smart enough to pick that stuff up?!
Does that mean he wasn't offended until some brainwashed brat was like

" Daddy! they're lyin' about jebus in this here learnin' book " ?!?!?!

eatboltsays...

If they were describing the Egyptian creation story of the Earth rising out the primordial chaos in the same book, wouldn't it be fair to call it a myth? Or should they temper the the language by saying, "The chaotic waters, called Nu, giving rise to the holy mound that the Earth eventually rose out of is one possible explanation for genetics, biology, and paleontology, but it's up to the reader to decide." It's a called a creation myth exactly the same way all other stories involving gods creating the world are called myths.

There has to be some standard of education. Quality is very important to assure that all children are receiving at least some semblance of what we call truth at that time. Calling things as they are is not a bias. It's just the truth. Get over it.

NetRunnersays...

I love the chyron: "BIAS AGAINST CHRISTIANITY?"

Yes, yes, the poor, poor oppressed Christians. Why they can hardly even sodomize young boys anymore without getting trashed by the mainstream media.

Stay classy, Fox.

Random House College Dictionary: myth (mith), n. 1. a traditional or legendary story, usually concerned with deities or demigods and the creation of the world and its inhabitants. 2. a story or belief that attempts to express or explain a basic truth; an allegory or parable. 3. a belief or a subject of belief whose truth or reality is accepted uncritically. 4. such stories or beliefs collectively.

why is this offensive to religion?

highdileehosays...

Creationism is an unfounded theory. I think the book should be banned for two reasons. It mentions a topic (creationism), that should be marginalized and never discussed in school within any context. Every time that sentence is read, i'm sure the entire day in class is wasted with political rehtoric and back and forth about the creationist/evolutionist theories. Instead they should be spending their time discussing things that are important, like science for example.

secondly at the end of the day, none of those students will have a different opinion, and almost all don't give a shit in the first place. You could set them all on fire and douce the ashes with baby tears and it wouldn't matter one fucking bit. This story isn't at all about kids, it's about internet nerds and dumb parents who can't get enough bashing and controlling. So fucking what, what are you going to do about it, type angerly? That's the only outcome I see in this discussion.

Im an atheist through and through*, however he has a point:

You can't call society's religion myth, as that implies falsehood: which if you missed it, is athiests forcing belief on others. Which is of course, is disappointing as its the victim becoming the victimizer.

I would not call the Australian aborigine's Dreamtime stories "mythology", Id call it a creation belief or even better, a religion belief.

*Even though that sounds like I'm a Christian plant posing as an atheist

why is this offensive to religion?

Probably because of other interpretations of it, and other definitions, such as this one from www.dictionary.com

1.a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, esp. one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature.
2.
stories or matter of this kind: realm of myth.
3.
any invented story, idea, or concept: His account of the event is pure myth.
4.
an imaginary or fictitious thing or person.
5.
an unproved or false collective belief that is used to justify a social institution.

These are quite inflammatory...

Maurusays...

switch out the word "myth" with the word "belief" or another adequate word. Ask religious organizations to pay for switching out the textbooks in question - if they refuse, tell them it will be in the "next edition".

^ Why do I have the faint idea that this is not going to end this way...

"Creationism - the biblical myth that the universe was created by the Judeo-Christian God in 7 days."

Well that should be banned - even an Atheist like me knows he created it in 6 days. He rested on the 7th.

People don't normally have faith in scientific fact.

That's something that comes up quite often (Bill Mayer, I'm looking at you) and I always disagree. Yes we do have faith in scientific fact, at least I do.

E=MC^2

Is that true? I've never actually tested it. I barely know what it means (something about energy, mass and the speed of light?). But I believe it's true. Why? Because I have faith in science. It's not the same as having faith in religious ideas, I will readily concede that. I have faith in science because I believe that if I studied hard, I could prove to myself that E does indeed equal MC^2 and I have faith in the general scientific community to call out someone who claims something without proof. Generally speaking in religion, having faith means accepting that it can't be proven.

I think we do have faith in science, but not blind faith.

Why would God need to rest? Omnipotent perfect supreme beings get tired?!?!

I know, I know... I should be burned alive at the stake for asking that question (making that presumption)... how dare I?
