Australian Anti-Speeding Ad - Very Disturbing

This was the first commercial to tackle the issue of low-level speeding and to show the extraordinary difference that driving just 10 km/h less can have on a pedestrian.

A motion-controlled camera gives an incredible insight into what happens to a body when hit by a car at speed, and the results are itemised by a trauma surgeon who has seen it all only too often.
Launched: 1997.
Victorian Road Toll that year: 377.

i think these kind of speeders are the ones @raverman was talking about in another post.
i would agree with him on that point.no reason to be speeding in an area like that at all.
this video is only disturbing in its graphic nature but sometimes you have to slap the smart in to people and visuals are the best tool for that.
nice post pumpkin.

I've seen some gruesome speeding ads in Aus in my time (speeding, as well as various other subjects like seat belts, drink driving etc).

I know some other countries do this, but for anyone who might feel this is an over the top approach, the situation is that the various campaign agencies have had to go to such 'shocking' level's of advertising just to have an impact and get some people's attention.

The ads aren't pleasant to watch, and that's the point.
I understand some of the public disinterest government agencies have to contend with, and subsequently support these kinds of ads.
Additionally aside form the stats that police and road authorities will report, I've personally known a number of Aussies who've changed their driving behaviors positively as a direct cause of these ads.

A few more examples of the various types of ads that get aired in Australia for anyone that's interested.

Note: when these ads were first aired/seen, the public/viewer didn't know they were watching a speeding/drinking ad.. which really increased the 'wtf just happened' feeling.

So he basically just admitted that you can drive at 10kph above the speed limit*?
Frankly, if you're doing 70kph on a shopping street like that, you're a moron.

* limit in built up areas is usually 50kph for Americans and Brits still working in cubits or whatever

Yeah, it's your right to jog out between parked cars in the middle of the block instead of using a crosswalk, a corner, or even a little common sense.

Lapses in judgement happen, doesn't mean people should be killed for it. People driving at 70kph in shopping areas like this are just as fucking stupid as people that don't look where they're going. In normal circumstances, the pedestrian'd get some good old fashion Aussie swearing for not looking, not be maimed or killed.

I'm willing to bet that the people who are affected most by this kind of ad are more likely to be safe drivers in the first place. The UK has been running increasingly shocking safe-driving adverts for decades and people still speed.
